Ask Nathaniel

Q&A time. In this movie lull -- a weird space between winter platforming and summer blockbusters -- what should we discuss? Ask some questions. I'll pick two handfuls to answer.

If you could bring back any movie star deceased back in a Peter Cushing Rogue One style cameo who would you choose.

Have you ever wanted to make a movie? (I know you don't like questions that require really long answers, and so I'll be happy with something brief!)

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

Have you seen "Your Name"? It's a mix of "Freaky Friday," "The Lake House", and "Fault in our Stars" -- and it works!

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

Who would you cast as Joan Crawford if you were able to suggest alternate casting for Feud?

If you could put Meryl Streep and Judy Davis together in a project, what would it be?

Will Jake Gylenhaal ever break through as a leading man? Why has he not?

What are your overall feelings towards Terrence Malick and his movies?

What music videos do you consider equivalent in their visual storytelling to cinema?

You recently mentioned Almodovar in some post and the possibility of doing a retrospective at some point. I know he's your favorite living director, so I'm curious to hear what are some of your favorite parts of his filmography. Let's say, in Oscar fashion, favorite movie, script, lead and supporting actor/actress performances?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Could the Captain Marvel wind up cancelled or pushed back and that initial slot replaced with the first movie of the Marvel Netflix crop? When your choices that could make the leap are blind guy, black guy and different female, I'm not seeing too much of a downside for Marvel if that does happen. Or maybe that can't happen because Marvel has strident expectations of budget...?

Because veteran actors at about 50, like Liam Neeson and Sean Penn, can prove they can be action stars, why haven't veteran actresses been given the same kind of opportunity and if it were up to you, what older actress would you give her own Taken-style vehicle?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMatt St. Clair

You recently linked to an article discussing the greatest current female action stars.

Who do you think are the top 5 current female stars and top 5 of the past? Who belongs on that all star list?

(I think Charlize Theron is really moving up the list fast and looks likely to earn her place in the all-time best with Atomic Blonde).

Still no comments/ thoughts on The Post Streep/Hanks/Spielberg collaboration?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

One of the lingering obsessive thoughts I have post-Big Little Lies is how vastly underrated/underused Robin Weigert is.
I keep repeating "Get an apartment, stock the fridge." in my head.
Any thoughts on her?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCorey

Do you miss the era when movie and soundtrack with hit songs go together? Everytime I think about John Travoltra and Debra Winger dance scene with Johnny Lee's Looking for Love in Urban Cowboy, I smile. What's your favorites?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJack

If Cate and Nicole were to offered to star in a remake, which film would you want it to be?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterheikoS

I'm just writing to echo Corey's comment about Robin Weigert. I think about her monologue as the Mormon mannequin in Angels in America all the time! Since then, the indie film Concussion and, of course, Big Little Lies have accentuated her brilliance.

Which historical figure's life do you wish could be made into a movie that hasn't been done already? And would this person's life also lend itself into a Broadway musical Hamilton-style?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

The Kidman World Cup was fabulous. Name your top three actors and top three actresses - obviously aside from Kidman - who would be fun to explore the same way.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

Jennifer Lawrence: After her underperforming Joy and Passengers, what's your prognosis? Will she remain dominant or is her time at the top already slowly passing?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRooney Mara

What podcasts (besides TFE, of course!) do you recommend? I just discovered Sewers of Paris, which interviews gay men about their pop culture touchstones. Some famous (Dan Savage, Drew Droege), some not.

Also, which classic (s)exploitation films of the 60s/70s would you consider noteworthy?

Is your series offering a second review of films ever going to come back?

How badly do we need to re-assess trans portrayals in early 90s cinema? There's everything from Ace Ventura to The Crying Game. Also Soapdish, Silence of the Lambs, and all the drag movies because heaven help us most didn't know the difference between drag queens and transgender people then.

Is there a remake of a Best Picture winner you would like to see?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSean C

Can "Get Out" and "Logan" get some Oscar attention?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

What's your opinion of the films of Lars Von Trier and Ingmar Bergman? I see them as very similar in how they tackle subjects.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterZach Antle

Second question: If you could assign three film roles in the last seven years to Katie Jarvis, what would you choose? (Mine would be Madding Crowd 2015, Suffragette and Star Wars: Rogue One.)

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Any play that might be up for a Tony next month that would make an interesting film adaptation?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

What are your overall thoughts on Chris Pine? Do you like him as an actor? Do you see an Oscar nomination in his future?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

Recently Ridley Scott revealed that his original vision for the ending for Alien was for Ripley to die (she was to harpoon the alien, but it would make no difference, and it would kill her, and then manipulate the control boards of the ship [with the implication that it would be heading to Earth]). What do you think of this ending?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Joe: I can't speak for Nat, but that ending makes the Alien TOO smart in my book. A Predator movie ending like that? Would make sense. But the Alien is best as an animal-like being and "able to fly a spaceship" kills that idea.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Do you miss how in the 80s some great popular singers (e.g. Lionel Richie, Phil Collins, Cyndi Lauper) wrote some of their best music for movies? Which modern musician would make the most potent combination with which modern filmmaker?

x2 @ the Jennifer Lawrence question.

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAna

Do you believe that Barbra Streisand's career as actress and or director are over?
I don't relish asking the question but I think it is valid...
And yes, I am a fan of Barbra's and TFE.
Thanks.

Hi Nathaniel, will there be Film Bitch nominees for acting in limited (cameo) roles or I did I miss them? Chris

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

I just finished reading Where'd You Go Bernadette, and the casting of Cate Blanchett is sooo perfect, that it's almost taken away some of the excitement around it, because it's so flawless and indesputable.
I'm not entirely sure how to eloquently and correctly phrase what I'm getting at, but have you ever experienced that, where the casting of a role is just so on point, and the actor just nails every beat impeccably, that the obviousness of them in that role ultimately takes away some of the thrill of the performance?
