YNMS: "Thor: Ragnarok"

Chris here. Though next month brings Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we here at The Film Experience are keeping even more of an eye on November's threequel Thor: Ragnarok. The first looks of Cate Blanchett as villain Hela has had us all giddy, even those who might be irked at one of our greats hopping into the MCU at this stage. My bet is if she has fun, so will we - no matter how her turn with Indiana Jones turned out.

But it's more than actressing that's got us hyped for another go with the Asgardian hero. With Taika Waititi at the helm, we can expect a hard left turn from the previous Thor installment The Dark World's gloominess. Seriously, readers, if you haven't checked out his most recent lovable yucksters What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, do yourself a favor.

This week we got our action-packed first look at the vibrant trailer. Take a look for yourself and we'll break down the Yes No Maybe So after the jump...

YES

  • Blanchett Blanchett Blanchett. Bemoan one of our greats joining the MCU all you want, but Cate looks to be having a blast here. Besides doesn't it feel like forever since we've had the kind of villain diva worship we're promised here?
  • [insert "flung out of space" joke]
  • You can always count on Chris Hemsworth to remind you that he's Marvel's most underrated comedian. "He's a friend from work!"
  • It's about friggin' time we get to see Tessa Thompson play an action heroine! Future movie star alert!
  • ♥︎ the Atari era font

NO

  • Cool it with "Immigrant Song", movie trailers.
  • Once you look past the fun, the story beats here foretell of a fairly predictable story. And recycling the world-destroying villain plot for Asgard doesn't make this any different than the Earth-bound MCU adventures.
  • Sure it's exciting that Hulk is here, but *sigh* why can they no longer save reveals like this for the actual film anymore? Yes I know this reveal is one of Marvel's worst kept secrets, but still...
  • The aesthetic here is overly reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy. We had fun with that movie but not enough to make it a new Marvel prototype.

MAYBE SO

  • The Thor films are at their best when they embrace the silly and, at this point, just give us a good time. Looks like Taika Waititi is the solid fit we thought he'd be.
  • Oscar hasn't fallen for Marvel, but Ragnarok could be a design competitor if they're feeling loose. From makeup design to costumes and production design, there's a whole lot of wit and spectacle going on here.

The Thor films may not be Marvel's most beloved, but this first look has me giving a full:

Do you like the Thor: Ragnarok teaser?

The "He's a friend from work" makes me sure to avoid this and watch the best Blanchett bits in a montage.

Why did her turn in Indy 4 go so wrong,no explination was ever given and she rarely speaks of it.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

Yep. These movies have varied between slog and outright painful. Looks like Taika Waititi is what they needed.

And while Immigrant Song is great, yeah, no trailer is going to top its use in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo's (maybe the best trailer of this decade), so best not to raise the comparison.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

Also see Waititi's BOY and his Oscar-nominated short film. He's mad talented.

One thing I find groovy about this is how it's sort of an old school sequel in that it's going completely different instead of more of the same like Marvel almost always gives us (Captain America went in reverse; going from sepia-toned classical style to grey modernism). Like an ALIENS or a GREMLINS 2 where the filmmaker doesn't seem to care all that much and just makes a movie they want to make with the bones of what's already there. There's only so much Waititi can do, of course, but its appreciated nonetheless.

Are they going for a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe? No. RIP Cate's film career.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

Huh. I skipped the 2nd Thor film (and skip most Marvel movies nowadays) but this does look fun and Blanchett alone might make it worth it.

You know what's funny about Hemsworth? He was an unknown before Thor but they cast him anyway because he was the right actor for the role. I'd think you could just say "two words: Chris Hemsworth" to anyone defending whitewashing because they need "stars" to sell a movie, but maybe it's only okay to cast unknowns when they're white?

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

All the way yes. This is THE Marvel film people don't know they've been waiting for. Pinches of Guardians to jump-start the Thor movies as they delve deeper into Norse mythology than ever before while simultaneously incorporating the masterful Planet Hulk run without damning Ruffalo to an entire film of mo-cap Spartacus without any other Avengers? Hell yeah.

Boy, does it look sucky and silly!
How embarrassing for Blanchett!
I wish they (The Shitty Superhero Movies inc.) had left Tessa Thompson the fuck alone -
for my money she doesn't have to become any bigger than she is right now.
"Future movie star alert", you say.
I say, I just want her to be a character actress.

(I wish that The Shitty Superhero Movies inc. had left Zazie Beetz alone as well.
And I really hope that Anya Taylor-Joy and X-Men part ways.)

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

Are you people mentally unsound?

Thor: Ragnarok is sinking Blanchett's career and it's an embarrassment for her?

I actually LOL-ed

This movie is guaranteed to be better than the first 2 Thor movies combined.

It'll demolish at the Box Office.

Heck, it's released in November and if it's as critically acclaimed as Episode VII it will even be a Best Picture contender, with Blanchett, a Supporting Actress contender.

While I agree that signing up for the MCU should not be the career validation of every. single. talented. actor & actress we have - i gotta say this trailer achieves the incredible feat of making me excited for a third Thor movie. The casting alone - from Tessa & Cate, to Goldblum, Hiddleston, Elba, Ruffalo & Karl Urban - is to die for, but it also looks funny, energetic, colorful, and just crazy weird in a Led Zep album cover come to life kinda way (which, yeah, Immigrant song kinda helps with that one). Also, the MCU movies have definitely taken a better, less corporately-assembled turn since they dissolved the board of overseers for Phase 3. So yeah, I'm a YESSSSSSS all the way.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDaniel Hardy

Has appearing in a Marvel movie ever hurt anyone's career? Even Edward Norton survived The Incredible Hulk to become a Wes Anderson regular and get an Oscar nod for Birdman.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Yavor: Ulrich is the kind of guy who sees no difference between a BvS and a Winter Soldier. I'd just ignore him.
Daniel Hardy: I think part of the reason that the MCU has suddenly tried to aesthetically overhauling itself to be even more fluid and gorgeous is that they're, pretty much, going to have to start accommodating the Marvel Netflix side of itself soon. MCU Spider-Man 2, guest starring Daredevil? Yeah. Not that that's the only reason, but I'd say you're insane to think its not one of them.
Suzanne: No, it hasn't. Mark Ruffalo got TWO Oscar noms after signing on, both of them fairly questionable in my book.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

In that one smirk, Hela has already out-acted pretty much every superhero villain of the last 10 years. Let's not pretend like suddenly Cate Blanchett doesn't know what she's doing. Negative people should do themselves a favor and start finding stuff they will like about the movie. There is obvious new blood here.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

Anyone saying they'll skip this one, really needs to see Watiti's work.

Like, now.

With the trailer I have this one as possible spoiler for Golden Globes noms at Picture, Actor and Actress in Comedy/Musical. This could Deadpool 2017's globes. Aside from this... it really needs stellar reviews and b.o. to break through PGA, DGA and WGA contention... and I see none of them here, however this will help Watiti to soon be back at the Oscars and likely win one.

"I know him... he's a friend from work!" and the "Yeah" completely sold this to me. And I did like both Thor movies so far... but this looks to have the extra punch they were both lacking.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Lol okay, let's cool it with the Oscar and Globes talk.

But also, Cate's a smart woman and a kick-ass actress - so she wants to let her hair down, have fun, play a villain and audition for Rupaul's Drag race season 10! What's wrong with that?

It looks a blast, I'm in - Waititi's filmography speaks for itself. (And as a Kiwi myself this is a proud moment!)

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMorganb

I will see it. But only because of Cate!

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEz

So many negative nancy's up in the comments. What trailer are they watching? Because this teaser looks great and fun. Funny Chris Hemsworth is second only to naked Chris Hemsworth. And YASSSS to Cate.

I'm a big YES for this.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

With Jeff Goldblum, Tom Hiddleston, bad wigs, and excessive CGI, I am a no.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGeena Davis

Cate will seriously kick some ass here. I adore her to bits!

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJans

Is this for stoners who like Saturday morning cartoons? Cate is spandex does not excite me.

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Honestly, I think it looks fucking awesome. Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldlbum, Tessa Thompson, Thor w/ a haircut and the Hulk...... FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!

April 11, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Thor falls into the "Flash Gordon" Galaxy.

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

i really have no interest in the marvel universe but taika waititi hasn't disappointed me yet...

i'm so confused

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterpar

I haven't seen any of the Thor movies but this seems like it might be fun.

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJames T

The pretentiousness in here, get off your ridiculous high horse, sometimes silly, popcorn stuff is nice, and clearly Cate seems to have enjoyed it somewhat, good for her.

I wasn't looking forward to this (not because I'm super pretentious with a stick in my ass about superheroes, but because the Thor movies have been the weakest so far). But Cate & Tess Thompson have me pumped and the trailer looks good. Can't wait.

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBee

Looks fantastic but after Tessa crashing and burning on Westworld I have very low expectations for her Valkyrie

April 12, 2017 | Unregistered Commentersati

As a repressed Catholic boy, seeing Thor's haircut makes me like him 9999999% more.

April 13, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaolo

I must admit, this is the first time I ever watched a Marvel movie trailer more than once. A big YASSS for Cate alone. :)

April 13, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSanty C.

If it's really actually funny and entertaining, YES. None of that pondering angst shit again.

Also, they'd be fools to just keep Cate for one movie. If she steals it (easily) they might wanna consider making her the big baddie for the next few Marvel films. Idk could be a fun part time summer gig for her. Also, the Sydney Theater Company needs a new roof!
