Box Office: "Get Out" Won't and "Fate of the Furious" Grows
Sunday, April 16, 2017 at 1:16PM Get Out, now in its 8th weekend, just refuses to enter the sunken place i.e. the lower echelons of the box office charts. That's a long run already with enormous returns ($183 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget? It's what all scrappy films dream of!)
But the story of the weekend was the return of the Fast and Furious franchise with film #8 The Fate of the Furious. It grossed an estimated $100 million out of the gate which is significantly lower than its previous Paul Walker farewell entry. But don't cry for it. $100 is still a big big opening weekend and its foreign gross quadruples the American haul so it's already broke a half billion in that first weekend. If the estimates hold it will just barely edge out The Force Awakens as the biggest global opening ever. I'll just be over hear pretending that that $100 million in the US is audience excitement about Charlize Theron wreaking havoc because we love that badass bitch. The charts are after the jump...

This weekend, I saw Army by Keisuke Kinoshita, a re-watch of Lost & Found, and just now, Play It Again, Sam.
"Ghost in the Shell" was really dull- yes visually dazzling but the story was so predictable. Not even Johansen's star power could save it- and I doubt an Asian actress in the lead would have made much of a difference. It seem to be set in the same world as "Blade Runner" which still looks cooler and more convincing- but the plot about an android dealing with her humanity was better done in the over rated "Ex Machina" and the great "West World" series.
And the really should have stopped making these "Fast and Furious" movies after Paul Walker's tragic death- but you know Hollywood greed knows not bounds
Jaragon - not sure what your getting at. Paul was NEVER the draw of these movies. They'll continue to be at the same-ish quality as before.

After the Storm, a Japanese family drama/comedy. Excellent.
Vertigo at SF International Film Festival. Even creepier than I remembered. Hitchcock was a brilliant but disturbed man.
Thank you Easter Bunny for TCM showing a Douglas Sirk marathon ... Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, The Tarnished Angels, etc. Lawd, the lineup at the theaters is a sad state of affairs. Post-Oscars dreck.
Six Degrees of Separation on Broadway with Allison Janney, John Benjamin Hickey, and Corey Hawkins. The themes seem to resonate more today than they did nearly 30 years ago. I also realized how faithful the film adaptation is having finally seen the stage version.
I just saw "Get Out" this weekend and I think it earned every dollar, for a combination of the quality of the film + social/racial observation it delivered. I'm pleased as punch that it was given to us by Jordan Peele.
I watched 'Strike a Pose' on Netflix. It was very good. I cried a lot at the end.

Anonnimy- my point in that "Furious 7" had a nice closure to the series- yes of course they will continue to make them even if Vin Diesel will have to ride around in a wheel chair.
Count me in as another person who hopes Betty Gabriel gets recognition for her marvellous turn in Get Out.
That would be a perfect role for practice in an acting class. At first try, the students would be puzzled that their attempts were so flat. Then they could discover the layers of timing, odd rhythms, changes of pace, gliding movements, momentary changes from one personality to another, and inexorable perseverance.

Black Narcissus - wow, what a gorgeous movie. I could hardly get past the cinematography but the movie itself is just so entertaining. And boy did Kathleen Byron really chew the scenery when her character went mad.
And last night we watched the Mapplethorpe doc on HBO. He's such a fascinating artist but I had no idea of the scope of his work. His celebrity and flower portraits are stunning, even if they don't get as much attention as...you know...his *other* photos.
