Netflix Screengrab Roulette (May 2017)

Just one of these months we'd love a slight surprise and for Netflix to throw a bone at the movie fans they built their empire on. I'm considering cancelling my streaming service and going DVD only -- the exact opposite of what the rest of the world does but I need my movies and, FACT, they just aren't providing them any more. Pickings gets slimmer by the month. Consider that this month they've literally added only two titles made before 2000s, one Bollywood picture and Forrest Gump. That is insane and, well, lame. They don't care about movie fans now that they have popular TV shows of their own to produce.

Nevertheless we'll do a screengrab roulette of a few titles. First image that comes up gets posted, no cheating...

Look at these lips. Those are kissable lips."

Don't Think Twice (2016)
I keep hearing this is good. Time to watch!

- I am not an educated woman Mr. Katende. I understand nothing.

Queen of Katwe (2016)
This movie about a Ugandan teenager who dreams about being a chess champion is sweet and inspiring if a touch too repetitive for that hair over two-hour running time. David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o were both really strong in it.

It's siphoning off my pornography --all my meticulously alphabetized pornography!!!!

Nerdland (2016)
In this scene from an animated movie I've never heard of (have you?) -- the two characters are voiced by funny guys Patton Oswalt and Paul Rudd ---  an attempted hack is hacking back with a counter virus or something.

Right now I'm on vacation. I leave my job and I come and I rock-n-roll and then I go back and it's back to the same ol' bullshit."

Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008)
In this scene a member of the Canadian death metal band Anvil is talking to a rather confused group of Romanian fans at a concert in Transylvania (10,000 capacity / 174 in attendance). You know a documentary is good when you don't care about the topic at all but still find it gripping.

- I should probably warn you. If you make friends with us, you make enemies of others.

- Is that a promise?

Chocolat (2000)
Uff, I hated this movie so much back in the day. That was back when Harvey Weinstein could get any trifle nominated for Best Picture if he released it in December. SO GLAD THAT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE. No Christmas trifles and no one mogul should ever be secure. The quality of the movie has to count so it's better when the game is more volatile! (I always forget that Johnny Depp was in this in his career floundering period between that wonderful early 90s period and the post Pirates of the Caribbean reality in the Aughts -- the period when everyone thought he was talented but maybe not remotely bankable)

For me it is worth the small amount they ask a month.. even if I watch one series and a movie!

Don't Think Twice is a must see!

Yes, pleaseohplease watch DON'T THINK TWICE. It's lovely and very touching, and honest in ways I think similar movies can be very contrived.

Don't Think Twice is the best movie I've seen about the impact success can have on your peer group. Mike Birbiglia is the real deal; honest writing, confident direction, and he gets great performances out of all of his actors. A definite must-see Nathaniel.

PS. I particularly enjoyed all the digs aimed towards SNL.

Don't Think Twice is a treat. Queen of Katwe is a also a treat. I even like Chocolate, but I won't call it a treat because the pun is too much and because Harvey.

Things to Come has been available since 1 May! I don't know if it's been mentioned here yet.

Question: How close do Nyong'o and Oyelowo get to making your shortlist? Lupita makes my top 5.

Don't bother switching to DVDs. They're forcing you off. Their DVD collection used to be my joy, but they stopped maintaining it. It seems as DVDs become damaged they are not replaced.

Back in 2011, I blogged about this tragedy here: http://www.deborahlipp.com/2011/10/netflix-hates-its-customers/ and here http://www.deborahlipp.com/2011/11/adventures-in-customer-service-follow-up/

God, I hated Chocolat.

I LOVE CHOCOLAT!

Haters have no souls.

I totally get the love of film, but there is other good, visual storytelling available on Netflix in the form of series (mini-, regular-, anthology-, or otherwise) and I've never run out of new, compelling things to watch for my $7.99/month (e.g., Five Came Back, Abstract: The Art of Design, Ingobernable, Dear White People, Wentworth). But I do agree that their list of new movies is lacking, so when I've missed things in the theater (which usually means most new releases), I seek out other streaming sources.

Don't Think Twice is great!

Right with you, Nathaniel! I've had a DVD-only subscription for years now, though sadly I make so little progress with my queue I'm throwing my money away. But the movie selection on streaming is so wanting.

Anvil is absolutely not a death metal band

C'mon, Chocolat is great! Classic- esp. Binoche and Molina. I remember I went into both Chocolat and Amelie very skeptical of their triflishness and wasn't expecting much from either, but both pleasantly surprised me!

Kris -- i don't know anything about heavy metal or death metal or thrash metal (?) whatever other subgenres it is, so i'm sorry if i got it wrong. What are they?
