Cartoon Brew it turns out the new animated film Leap is actually a previously internationally released animated film named Ballerina, reworked by the Weinsteins for the US with a new voice cast. The difference: the reviews are terrible this time
Variety Orland Bloom to star in and produce an urban fantasy series called Carnival Row which has humans and mythological species interacting (sounds a smidge like the new Will Smith project Bright)
The Guardian James Cameron interview on Terminator 2. But the part that's getting quoted is his dismissal of Wonder Woman (though he says he enjoyed it)
Variety... but naturally Patty Jenkins has fired back

Nerdist we haven't heard anything about that ill-advised movie remake of The Birds (1963) in a while. But now there's news that another adaptation of the source novella is aiming to be a dramatic BBC miniseries
Mental Floss extensive piece on the costumes of Game of Thrones
Boy Culture Jay Thomas of Mork and Mindy and Murphy Brown fame has died of cancer

Ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with Madonna for a whole day on your birthday? Dennis Hensley enlisted his comedienne friend Nadya Ginsburg to play her all day and find out. "C'mon" hit play. Ginsburg is a brilliant Madonna impersonator and proves it again.

I totally agree with Cameron save the fact that I didn't enjoy Wonder Woman. It was lousy and tacky as most super heroes movies are, nothing new. Some people seem to think that box office or popularity equals quality. That said, I'm happy it was a hit since it was directed by a woman and there is some many great women directors that deserve more and better projects and a success like this can open some doors.

James Cameron on Wonder Woman: Look, yes, this is a step backward...From the TERMINATOR 2 version of Sarah Connor. ANYTHING would read less "tough" than Terminator 2 Sarah Connor. Katie Jarvis in Fish Tank is probably less tough than T2 Sarah Connor. Not an invalid comparison, but so broad as to be useless. Compared to the previous entries in the DCXU and the prior superheroine movies (Supergirl, Catwoman, Elektra), this IS a huge step forward.

Patty Jenkins sure likes run-on sentences.

Volvagia - I've never watched Fish Tank but i've seen people commenting on Katie Jarvis and her performance and i don't understand. Isn't that film a drama? People make it sound like she is Clarice Starling meets Beatrix Kiddo. Is she really that awesome in that film? Or is it a really good drama performance?

August 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEvaG

EvaG: It's a really good drama performance, but one where you could actually imagine the actress as a really good action star.

August 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

James Cameron needs to be kicked in the balls for that stupid comment.

August 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Volvagia -- hmmm. your fascination with Jarvis is so consistent. but I cant say that i saw that AT ALL in her work. She felt to me more like a non-actor who happened to be really blissfully unaware of the camera (i mean that as a compliment) and merely was existing onscreen. I always think of action stars as having to be very heightened performers, intensely theatrical in the non-fussy way of thinking of that term.

Hmm. I don't hate what Cameron said. He seems to be criticizing Hollywood for praising itself for WW without really committing to diverse representations of women. Yes, it's true that Gal Gadot is super attractive and works for most audience members as a result. The same could be said for all super heroes (attractiveness is a part of all of it). Jenkins' point about allowing for multiple types of strength is spot-on though. Women should not need to perform militant masculinity to be taken seriously as strong (but those who do are fine too). But WW is a long way from Scarlet Johansson bending over in front of the camera for Iron Man 2.

There are lots of versions of strength and WW was one that fit well with the universe in which she lives. I think/hope Cameron just misspoke/didn't think it through--reading the comment in context seems much more about the frustrating continued lack of awesome female characters (with which I'm sure Jenkins and Gadot agree) in addition to a self-serving "and I made some great ones!" egocentric tone which was/is consistent with pretty much everything else he said/says.

Is that movie pass offer legit ?? $10 a month for unlimited movies in theaters?? What's the catch!?

August 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMe

On another topic....... I saw BALLERINA way back in January, and it has been consistently in my "Worst Of 2017" ever since. You can't get much more cliched and patronising than this film. The characters are so grating.

That Madonna video was funny. Thanks for the laughs.

August 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Both James Cameron and Patty Jenkins are right.

Thanks for that Madonna video. That was a nice sweet and funny adventure.

Me, the catch is that they use the films your see and sell the information to marketing for the app. I think that's what I read, anyway. I loved MoviePass when I was in NYC. Was such a huge help in actually being able to afford going to many movies.

Me -- the $10 thing surprised me. I joined a while ago and I think i pay $40 a month but if you go once a week it totally pays for itself and if you go more than that huge savings.

"The Birds" remake would work if they go back to the original story which is much darker than the Hitchcock film- and the birds would be perfect for 3 - D. Cameron has always featured strong female characters so he is entitled to his opinion. And I did love "Wonder Woman" which was the best super hero movie of the Summer.

August 26, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterjaragon

Instead of an unnecessary remake of 1963's The Birds - aren't we at the state of technology where this film can be released in 3-D like the recent re-release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (now in 3-D)?
