In a lame weekend All Saints, Leap, and Birth of the Dragon were the only new wide releases. To fill in that gap several films expanded including Ingrid Goes West, Good Time and Wind River though only the latter was sufficiently rewarded for doing so. The weekend was so dire that Wonder Woman and Despicable Me both took the opportunity to add back tons of theaters (earning $1.6 million each with that gambit).
The most exciting indie release this weekend was the gay Sundance-winning drama Beach Rats (review coming soon). It opened in only 3 theaters (it would have been #11 in the limited release chart above) but to a strong per screen average so expect it to come to other cities soon.

I bingewatched the originals seasons of Twin Peaks and now I am ready to watch the new one on netflix,

I've seen This Is Where I Leave You today. It was nice. Nothing new or spectacular, but overall nice. Loved the cast.
I saw the French historic drama Danton, Nick Cave doc 20,000 Days on Earth, Norwegian documentary Brothers, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, and now I'm watching Woody Allen's Whatever Works. Just having a little toilet/phone break.
I finally got around to Dunkirk and did not like it at all. It just all fell so flat for me. The score, with the timer ticking then being echoed by other instruments for almost the entire film, made me want to leave the theater. Maybe if anyone had more than a stock character attribute--he's brave, he's resourceful, he's compassionate, etc.--I could have found something to latch onto.
I also hatewatched the Netflix Death Note film and was somehow still disappointed knowing it would be a total disaster. How do you go so wrong with such a simple story? How? There's nothing ground breaking in Death Note; it's literally style over substance. Yet the US Netflix adaptation managed to suck out the style and change just enough to make it boring. That's not even getting into idiotic decisions like the white Light assuming the name Kira so the cops would try to find a Japanese person responsible for his murders. I feel bad for Lakeith Stanfeld, who is quite good as L, as the right adaptation could have made this a breakout role for him.
I watched Get Me Roger Stone and became infuriated, but in that good way that excellent documentaries can make you angry.
So I went 1/3 on good films and might just crawl into bed and rewatch Moana to feel good about my life choices.

I watched the big fight as the movies right now are pretty dull. Need to see Good Time though.
Been bingewatching S2 & S3 of "Grace and Frankie" which I finally finished today.
Saw HITMAN'S BODYGUARD last Tuesday, which kinda turned me off films in theaters at the moment. But I do have a bunch in queue now that they've opened in my city: INGRID GOES WEST, GOOD TIME, GOOK, and LEAP.
Some older films still to see: KIDNAP, DUNKIRK and MAUDIE.
I'm also hoping UNLEASHED opens here soon cause that seems like a fun comedy.
Does Project Runway Seasons 3 & 4 count? Because that's what I somehow wandered into. (Rami is just so gorgeous!)
"Good Time" earlier in the week. Excellent film. Sorry Nolan - THAT'S how you craft a propulsive, nerve-jangling narrative. Pattinson is great, but I'm surprised there isn't more being said about Benny Safdie as his brother. He's the real center of the film and gives it its plangent power as social critique.
Saw "Beach Rats" at Outfest back in July, and despite its unfortunate over-reliance on LGBT coming-of-age cliches, it's a really effective work. Harris Dickinson gives an amazing debut performance.
I saw "Wind River" which is so violent and grim I don't know if I can recommend it. Some people walked out of the theater because it becomes very gory towards the end. Other parts are thoughtful, but I think the message gets lost.
Saw Good Time ... fantastic film. Robert Pattison is so good in it that I forgot it was him until the movie ended. He definitely deserves to be recognized this year.
I saw Wind River and Good Time. Admired parts of both but didn't overly love them. Renner and Pattinsom are excellent though.
I watched Jamie Lee Curtis in Mother's Boys.
I caught up on Leviathan and Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Both are good not great. Off topic, also just saw the Gotham S4 trailer. Wow. Just...I'm locked into STUPID for another season.
Rewatched Julie and Julia. Good fun. Wish they had
just done the Julia part. Her whole life would have made for a very good movie.
Streep was masterful in her interpretation of Julia
I saw Marjorie Prime and was bored to tears. SO slow and painful. Love the actors though.
Had an Elizabeth Olsen double feature with Wind River Ingrid Goes West.
I saw " Logan Lucky" which I enjoyed- it's basically a blue collar "Oceans 11" but the cast makes it work and Sonderberg knows how balance the comedy.
I watched Cate Shortland's BERLIN SYNDROME - which kinda freaked me out and affected me more than I expected.
Ingrid goes west and so far Aubrey Plaza gives the best performance by an actress so far this year just being Nicole in The Beguiled, Charlize in Atomic Blonde (Why are people NOT going to see this one? Dam you Wonder Bore"man") and Jenny Slate in Landline!
"Death Note" - I don't know the source material, but this was weird and limp. Feels like an incomplete story, but I also have no idea what a sequel would be.
Also saw a revival screening of "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot", which is fun and truly offbeat, but lightweight. Not much plot, and the plot it does have is confusing. Also confusing: Jeff Bridges doing landscaping work in leather pants is only like the third weirdest costume detail.
Finally caught The Founder on Netflix. Michael Keaton was the weakest link. Because he didn't exude the charisma, gumption, or boundless energy of the real Ray Kroc, the film doesn't succeed in convincing the viewer that this man stole McDonald's from the brothers who originally founded it (or that he winds up marrying the much younger wife of one of his business associates). I wonder what Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, or Bryan Cranston could've done with the role...
I was very impressed by Beach Rats (and retroactively frustrated by its hazy reception at Sundance). The plot cliches don't really matter when the lead is so phenomenal and the crafting so assured.
I also found Eliza Pittman's previous feature, It Felt Like Love, ridiculously underrated. She's among my favourite emerging directors.
Damn it, Hittman* not Pittman!!
Who is the person who claimed The Beguiled won't hit $20 million globally (AKA it's a flop)?

Watched Pedro Almodovar's "Julieta." Not one of his best but the actressing was sensational and and with every Pedro film, it was beautiful to watch. He's such an amazing artist; made me want to go back and rewatch many of his classics.

We saw "The Midwife" -- "la Sage Femme" -- an excellent actressexualaganza with the Catherines Deneuve and Frot. The kind of French movie everyone who reads this blog wishes they made in the U.S.
I'm just finishing up watching "Dark Matter", a summer replacement show on the SyFy channel. SyFy has done a great job making summer fun with the trio of "Dark Matter", "Killjoys", and "Wynonna Earp".
But "Dark Matter" is my favourite because:
1) It's space opera
So there's a variety of storylines, some lighthearted parts, and the story just zips along.
2) Its clarity of image
The lighting must be really good. It's not a murky image, and they don't have to use choppy editing because these actors can really do fight scenes/ can really act.
3) The terrific ensemble cast
There's a diverse cast of a core 6: 3 women, 3 men. I really like all 6 characters. With their backgrounds as character actors and musical theatre players, they know how to listen, how to create a character with a few strokes or a few lines, and they keep up a brisk pace. It's also a pleasure watching actors who really enjoy working together.
Finally watched - Ex Machina - very interesting and unsettling....
I worked all weekend. But on Tuesday, I did see Logan Lucky. I thought it was fun. Falls apart by the third act and a lot of the actors were pretty wasted. But other than that, I still had fun with it.
I watched None but the Lonely Heart for the upcoming smackdown and oh my god was it boring. The cinematography and lighting were often stunning, but the accents were terribly inconsistent and I just did not care at all. Grant, however, looked smashing. You get both smooth, suave Grant and scruffy, dirty Grant which is not a thing I realized I needed until I had it. Rowr.
Also saw the original A Star is Born and loved it. I had low expectations because I thought the story sounded awful but it was charming, funny and compelling. March and Gaynor were great both separately and together. I wonder if the remakes can live up to this one.
