The Golden Globe Nominations!

HFPA president Meher Tatna introduced Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann, and Christian Slater to announce the nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards. We didn't quite get the shakeups we wanted for players that needed the high profile boost of the Globes (like Toni Collette or Carey Mulligan) to boost their dark horse Oscar prospects but the Globes gonna Globe and there's as much to praise (Charlize Theron!) as their is to shake your fists at (Bohemian Rhapsody in Best Picture, wtf?).
In not so great news (unless you love it of course) Vice led the nominations with 6 honors, with The Favourite, Green Book, and A Star is Born tied as runner-up to most nominations with 5 each. UPDATE: We've shared Team Experience reactions to the snubs and nominated directors, and talked the fate of First Man and Widows, but here was our first quick take on the nomination after the jump along with some commentary...

A STAR IS BORN was expected to lead the nominations. It didn't quite but still did really well
Drama
The nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody annoys -- even if you enjoy that movie because of its music (no judgment, Queen is an awesome band), it is a messy film, clearly showing it's turmoil with 3 different directors during production and troubles on set and band interference with the narrative. All the seams show.
Stupid trivia: "B" was the letter of the day apparently with all four titles having a prominent B in the title.

A very expected list... though it's a smidgeon odd if you think about it that they gave the original Mamma Mia! (2008) a Best Picture nomination in this category even though it was wildly inept as a motion picture and skipped the far superior sequel this year! Vice led the nominations... which is something.

The Globes gonna globe so they went with big stars even if their Oscar prospects are a bit wobbly right now (Kidman and McCarthy)... the sole shock is Rosamund Pike's highly praised performance in an underperforming film. But this is sad news for the awards season prospects of Toni Colette (Hereditary) and Carey Mulligan (Wildlife) who seemed to have a better shot here than they did with Oscar given the two different lead actress categories.

Lucas Hedges surprises with a nomination for Boy Erased and John David Washington's nomination for BlacKkKlansman also suggests that the film is strong heading probably headed toward SAG Ensemble and Oscar Best Picture nominations.
This is the first major speedbump for Ethan Hawke, though, for his rapturously praised work in First Reformed and an even bigger blow to Ryan Gosling's Oscar prospects for First Man; Gosling is a big enough star for immediate Globe interest. That they passed him by is not a good sign even though he's terrific in the movie.

Sad that they didn't find room for LaKeith Stanfield for Sorry to Bother You. Reilly is good in Stan & Ollie but it's such a Globe choice since it's a low profile British movie that is barely seen and coming out for New Year's essentially, so it will use this Globe nod for all its worth, promotion wise.

Lots of Category Fraud happening here with Ali and Chalamet both taking up spots that should've gone to suppporting actors but what can you do. Does the exclusion of Sam Elliott spell trouble for his Oscar prospects or is that merely a slight slip as oddities do happen in awards season. For the record, Rockwell isn't in very much of Vice but I knew people would love his work as George W Bush. He's fun in his couple (few?) scenes... even if a nomination is generous.

We really don't need Farrelly and McKay BOTH nominated this year when you've got people like Yorgos Lanthimos, Damien Chazelle, Marielle Heller, Ryan Coogler, Pawel Pawlikowski, Steve McQueen, Ari Aster, Hirokazu Koreeda, Bo Burnham, Paul Schrader, and Debra Granik all rightthere and available with stronger work.

All high profile contenders soperhaps this spells trouble for Poland's Cold War. That said Oscar and Globe foreign film lineups never go 5/5 so beware if you're predicting this exact list for Oscar. In fact, they never even go 4/5... Here's how this century has gone so far and you'll see that 2 of 5 is most common. Part of the difference is that the Globes work from a different eligibility list but it's also just different taste.

Troye Sivan and Annie Lennox and Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga and Dolly Parton!!! The Globes love having celebrities in the house and they're all way more famous than Marc Shaiman who wrote those Mary Poppins songs (he's nominated in score, so he's fine)! That said this is another category that doesn't correlate with Oscar's tastes all that well.
You have to wonder, though, given the Globes obsesssion with nominating pop stars in this category, why they dont have performances on their show?

I hate that they condone category fraud. I hope that reporters on the red carpet will ask Ali, Chalamet, Stone and Weisz why exactly their roles are supporting roles and not leading. Let's see them spin that on live TV.

Wow, no Sam Elliott. I was wary about his chances of winning, but not even being nominated is a surprise. I’m pretty sure he’s a lock for SAG, though, which probably means he’s still safe for an Oscar nod.
Super sad for Carey Mulligan who gives one of the performances of the year.
Also sad for Ryan Gosling, who I thought was just great in First Man.
I was also hoping that they would pull a Carol and nominate Emma Stone in lead, but it's hard to deny any of the lead nominees.

Movies aside, a few TV thoughts -
1) How can anyone nominate Sandra Oh while ignoring Jodie Comer?
2) How can anyone nominate Richard Madden while ignoring Keeley Hawes?
3) How can anyone nominate Ben Whishaw while ignoring Hugh Grant?
I'm baffled by this (especially because at next year's BAFTA awards I expect the missing people to be the nailed-on nominees, give or take eligibility for Killing Eve - UK production but screened in USA first)
I'm wonderfully shocked at the love for Blackkklansman. I thought it was a prime candidate to get snubbed across the board.
The only big losers in all this was First Man, Sam Elliott and Ethan Hawke. Best Actor is all up in the air.

The fact that HFPA has bought the submission of a genuine musical like 'A star is born' in the drama category because, apparently, the comedy/musical category is not prestigious enough for that film campaigners is even worse than any supporting category fraud.
To me, this, together with the absence of Barry Jenkins in direction, Ethan Hawke and any of the three best drama film actresses of the year (Toni Collete, Viola Davis and Julia Roberts) makes this year one of the worst GG line-ups ever.
Wow, just realized Widows got completely shut out.
Bonobo - I'm low-key hoping for A Star Is Born to lose all of its "Drama" nominations, simply to punish the studio...
Yaaay for “The Favourite” and ALL THREE actresses making the cut! I am pretty sure this will be repeated at the Oscars! Sad that Lanthimos didn’t make the cut for Best Director! Colman is winning and will provide some stiff competition to either Gaga or Glenn Close (whoever wins Drama category) Colman will also likely pick up the BAFTA, and given BIFA’s enthusiastic response to “The Favourite”, am almost certain Rachel Weisz too will win the BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress!
Pretty dire overall. Bohemian Rhapsody nominated for ANYTHING!!!??? No Ryan Gosling. No Widows. No Cold War or Burning.
I guess the only crumb I can gather is Lucas Hedges getting in for Best Actor. Yeah, that's about it.

This best Supporting Actress line-up is the Oscar line-up.
Rumor has it The Hollywood foreign press loved bohemian rhapsody and a lot of people saw this coming. I am surprised by no Sam Elliott especially since they obviously loved a Star is born. When the globes pass on a performance that scores at the Oscars it’s usually because they didn’t really notice the film, so no Elliott could be a bad sign for his chance at Oscar.
3 movies out of 5 in the Best Drama category are black stories. But the actor/actress lineup is so white
Most of the "snubs" are for movies/performances/people that really aren't in HFPA's wheelhouse, but I can't believe Lily James didn't get in for the Mamma Mia sequel. And Mary Poppins Returns missing in song is just WEIRD.

I'm starting to think that Elsie Fisher could come through and snag that fifth slot at the Oscars. She'll need SAG support to do it, but it seems possible... certainly moreso than a week ago.
And I don't think I agree with Guy Lodge re: dropping musical and just having comedy and drama. Yes, musicals can be serious or comic. But most years (not exactly this year where there were a good number of excellent comedies and 2 of the 3 musicals were diegetic and therefore listed as "drama"), having musicals on the comedy side helps to balance the number of contenders in each category.
Film nominees are all over the place as expected. The Globes love what they love.
But happy for Sharp Objects. Might be the best thing I've seen all year.
@kermit_the_frog - Hugh Grant is there. And yes, Nathaniel, you should watch A Very English Scandal. Hugh is one of the best actors working right now, and it is great to see!
Anyone who enjoyed Succession knows that Matthew MacFayden gave the standout performance in that series (and maybe on tv this year, bar Russell and Rhys). Their nomination for Keiran Culkin is sheer star-thirst.
Lots of disappointing snubs. I am just glad Melissa McCarthy made it. With Elliott's omission, it feels like her costar Richard E. Grant is the frontrunner for the Oscar now.
Amy Adams & Regina King both double nominees competing against each other in bothe categories? Has this ever happened before?
The only surprise that made me scream "yeah!" was BR in BP (I think I'm alone).
As usual Globes do perfect only towards nominees for score and song.
@Choog—almost happened in 1993 but Holly Hunter wasn't Globe-nominated for The Firm. She and Emma Thompson were both double nominees at the Oscars that year, though.
Incredible performances by women of color this year and only 2/15 of the nominees aren't white. Viola, Regina, Yalitza, Kiki deserve better. BURNING, WIDOWS, WILDLIFE, ignored...tragique. So bummed about LaKeith as well. Very interested to see if ASIB's gamble in drama pays off.
Good news for Robert Redford... maybe he'll get a "swan song Oscar nomination" after all...!
And "ISLE OF DOGS" appearing in both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score is such a joy to me!
Don't expect DGA or Oscar to fix this Directors list. I think Farrelly and Lanthimos are fighting for the 5th spot, the other 4 are in.
Very excited to see the broad recognition for BlacKkKlansman. I'm pulling for it all the way. As far as Lee's filmography goes I think this is a middle entry - certainly not as good as DTRT, Malcolm X or The 25th Hour - but it is time Academy. Lee is one of the most important directors of the last 40 years and to think he doesn't even have a directing nomination is a travesty.
Queen amy adams has 3 nomination! She should win for sharp objects!
I also was certain Julia Roberts would show up here. Kidman and Pike over Roberts is a surprise.
I tink the most surprising tink is Vice n not ASiB is the one who leads the nom.
Yes it's a major slight but Hawke, Collette n Elliot can still be the passion picks among the voters .
However, I guess it's the end o the road for Chazelle, Gosling, Ronan n Mulligan. Viola still has a gd chance at SAG as they luv her!!
On the TV side, am shocked at the omission o Maniac n Emma Stone. I'd thot it'll be a three way battle btw Amy, Emma n Regina at both supp actress n limited series categories.
I'm OK if Glenn Close wins. We all know A Star is Born is at the wrong category. But I am so happy for CRAZY RICH ASIANS and Rosamund freaking Pike!

Happy to see Charlize Theron and Elsie Fisher make it into a category that had much Globesier options.
I'm not surprised that Chalamet was able to make his way in but am surprised that it was at the expense of Elliott and not Driver or Rockwell.
Boo to the snubs for Toni Collette, Viola Davis, Carey Mulligan, Elizabeth Debicki, Lakeith Standfield, Ethan Hawke in their respective categories and the screenplays for Can You Ever Forgive Me? and BlackKklansman.
I wish the Globes hadn't been so nice to Amy Adams (back-to-back Best Actress wins for American Hustle and Big Eyes) so they'd have some justification to go overboard this year a la Winslet in 08.
Unfortunately for her, King is eminently rewardable in both categories. Maybe they'll split the wins?

FYI: I'm pretty sure these nominations are for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's second season (is it even out yet?), because Brosnahan already won a Globe for season 1.
