Smackdown Tease - Reader Votes!

by Nathaniel R

UPDATED POST: To correct for a second batch of ballots as I received both comment ballots and mail ballots.

Since the annual Supporting Actress Smackdown arrives tomorrow I thought I'd share a few notes from your ballots. Thanks for getting them in so quick. The most divisive performance with everything from 1 heart to 5 hearts on reader ballots was the Oscar frontrunner, I Tonya's Allison Janney. But it was Phantom Thread's Lesley Manville and Lady Bird's Laurie Metcalf who were neck and neck all through the counting of reader ballots. I'm on pins and needles -- looks like it might be close tomorrow!

After the jump your favorite contenders who missed the Oscar nomination...

We also asked readers to include "favorite five who weren't nominated" in their ballots. Fifty-six different names were cited in total with five way out front.  Here are the women who showed up on multiple ballots in order:

[tie] Michelle Pfeiffer (mother!)
 Holly Hunter (The Big Sick)

...those two were out front comfortably. The next three were tied with strong support to complete your "alternate" Oscar ballot.

[tie] Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip)
Hong Chau (Downsizing)
Betty Gabriel (Get Out)

Outside the "alternates" which we'll pretend makes a ten-wide list with the actual nominees (isn't it a beauty?) here were the other women who were able to acquire at least a few votes, ranked by groups...

  1. [tie] Nicole Kidman (Killing of a Sacred Deer)
    Elisabeth Olsen (Ingrid Goes West)
Sienna Miller (The Lost City of Z)
  2. [tie] Kirsten Dunst (Beguiled)
    Allison Williams (Get Out)
    Bria Vinaite (The Florida Project)
    Lois Smith (Marjorie Prime)
  3. [tie] Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird)
Amira Casar (Call Me By Your Name)
  4. [tie] Melissa Leo (Novitiate)
    Harriest Samson Harris (Phantom Thread)
    Catherine Keener (Get Out)
    Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049)
  5. [tie] Naomie Ackie (Lady Macbeth)
    Talia Webster (Good Time)
    Kristin Scott Thomas (Darkest Hour)
    Gemma Jones (God's Own Country)

No other women received more than a couple of votes.

How the heck does Catherine Keener not get on a list like this? Come on people!

Um, is Nicole Kidman in The Killing of a Sacred Deer really supporting? I have her in lead.

DAFNE KEEN in LOGAN

February 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterConMan

I thought I saw quite a few votes for Bria Vinaite.

KEN -- you're right. Post is revamped. I forgot to check back to the comments where more votes had come in. (i received both email ballots and comment ballots)

Amira Casar is the Lesley Manville of CMBYN, in the sense that, with just a few lines and lots of glances conveys an integral portrait of a character. She's terrific!

February 25, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterchofer

Eek, I forgot to vote, However, I would of added Rebecca Spencer (Princess Cyd), Jennifer Ehle (A Quiet Passion) and Anne Dorval (Heal the Living) to the list of best supporting actress performance not nominate.

PS: Am I insane for considering The Beguiled a true ensemble, and having Kidman (x2) on my ballot?

Manville's portrail resonated more on a 2nd viewing,my sister interpreted her role as a seen it all before aloofness, going through the motions but secretly enjoying the power and the way she stirs that teacup has many implications.

February 25, 2018 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Patrick - I voted for Kidman in The Beguiled. I'm not sure what category you'd put her in, but I'd vote her regardless.

February 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Keener stirs the tea cup in Get Out. Manville has no tea cup scene(s) does she? In Phantom?

February 25, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMark

Mark- YES, she does. And Manville knows how to use those teacups to a mesmerizing effect, what a quietly commanding presence she is.

and to whom it may concern..... thought Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled was a waste of time. The 1971 Don Siegel version is way, way better, a strange and hypnotic clever psychosexual drama, undoubtedly Eastwood's finest hour and Geraldine Page is wonderfully complex as the steely Martha, 2017's version stripped away all the rich character development and backstory of Ms Farnsworth's incestuous relationship with her brother as well as the flashbacks that revealed the true conniving nature of John McBurney. No sexual tension between Kidman and Farrell didn't help either. As for the performances? Farrell, Dunst, Fanning, and Kidman weren't bad, but their characters didn't allow them to be anything of note, they all do a serviceable job with their performances, but that's about it. I don't see anything Oscar-worthy here. Dunst should've been nominated for her mesmerizing turn in Melancholia and Kidman should've been in conversation just for her amazing performance in Sacred Deer.

Glad to see Elizabeth Olsen, Sylvia Hoeks and Talia Webster get some love.

The smackdown guests this week are wonderful. Really looking forward to the smackdown. Would love to hear what would be on Joe, Katey, and Nick's personal ballots as well.

Dang - too late! I hope Lesley Manville wins (5). Laurie Metcalfe was also good (4). Two subtle performances in their own ways... Lesley for mainly just sitting there and staring (did anyone else tense up every time she fake-smiled) and Laurie for playing a normal mother so perfectly.

Octavia Spencer was also good (3), but I really wish Del Toro and Taylor gave her more to do. The guys got to go to work (or apply for jobs), get pie, buy cars, etc. Octavia was just "Elisa's work friend".

Allison Janney was okay (3), but had kind of a thankless function (bad mom) with pretty much no additional shading.

Missing: Sylvia Hoeks, Holly Hunter, Sarah Silverman, Keala Settle, Betty Gabriel.

So glad to see Harris and Ackie get so me love. Ackie would maybe even be on my top 5 of the year, once I get around to putting that together.

Kidman is a lead in Sacred Deer. Raffey Cassidy is the Supporting Actress contender for that film, and she’s amazing, but Kidman is most certainly a lead and I’m not sure how one would categorize her otherwise.
