I really don't understand how he lost the Oscar to Alan Arkin. Blasphemous. He should definitely have that Oscar.

And Anika Noni Rose was much more interesting in the film than JHud, in my opinion.

But he still acted like a poor sport for that loss and releasing something as awful as Norbit was why he didn't win the Oscar.

Eddie should've taken the oscar.

People have blamed his loss on Norbit but it seems like it had more to do with him being disliked by many people in the industry. Like Stallone for Creed or Reynolds for Boogie Nights, both seemed like frontrunners at the start then ultimately loss.

In hindsight, it's better that Eddie and most of all Stallone lost their Oscars.

Murphy lost the Oscar because of petty Hollywood politics of I just don't like the guy.

murphy has earned his bad reputation in the business. the virulent anti-gay jokes also don't endear him to a person. also, that supporting actor lineup that year has to be one of the worst ever? anika noni rose is a delight, though...

Eddie should have won, too, I agree, but I also would have been happy with Jackie Earle Haley too. What a creepo!

Shoulda been Haley

June 15, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

Haley for me to.

I would have given it to Murphy, but Arkin and Haley were also very good.

I never understood the logic of Dreamgirls. Jimmy gives an amazing performance that in the real world not only would have kicked off a comeback, but his antics would have also been tabloid fodder for weeks. Instead it ends his career! And as a lifelong Eddie Murphy hater, I have to say his performance was spell-binding, easily the best of the year, and the only reason to watch this ridiculously overrated movie.

Haley was the best, of course

@ken s

The era the characters were in was ultra conservative. The shock antics which are normalized today were not a thing for broadcast television in the 70s.

The movie's still a crock

The inexplicable omission of Lorrell's solo number is the worst decision this (otherwise quite good) film made, and still maddens me for giving the wonderful Anika Noni Rose even less to do who is - nonetheless - the BEST supporting actress in this film. Choose any shot from any scene that she's in and she's completely inhibiting her character even (and especially) when she's not the centre of the scene. Marvellous work.

Though Eddie Murphy is undeniably great in Dreamgirls, I think it's a really hollow film; I tried a rewatch and still quite disliked it. And don't get me started on that Oscar for Jennifer Hudson.
