Netflix in August: The Aviator, Her, Silverado
Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 10:26AM Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share!
Remember when Netflix used to get recent movies and classics? Now they seem to be exclusively in the business of streaming things that are between 5-20 years old only... with the obvious exception of their original programming, cheap foreign tv series, and straight to streaming indie stuff that wasn't cut out for theatrical.

The Golden Compass (2007)
Have you ever read this book? It's fantastic and bold. The movie is sadly a compromised rendition but it's still a bit tragic that they didn't finish filming the trilogy. Nicole Kidman was a sensaysh "Mrs Coulter" at least. Whatever happened to Dakota Blue Richards? Remember what a surprise it was when this one beat the first Transformers movie to the Visual FX Oscar?!
Now, turn around for me.
The Aviator (2004)
Momentarily I was all 'Oooh Im gonna watch this again.' But then I remembered that it was three hours long. I'll admit I dont remember it well, so it's a bit weird that I was rooting for it so hard in 2004 to win Best Picture. Then again that Oscar list was dire since Vera Drake and Eternal Sunshine and The Incredibles were all missing from their rightful places.

P.S. I Love You (2007)
LOL. Kathy Bates is a treasure. I've never seen this movie. I remember at the time I was absolutely pissed off that Gina Gershon, Kathy Bates, and Lisa Kudrow were ALL playing second fiddle to Hilary Swank.

Bolt (2008)
UGH. I hate that cats are always portrayed as nefarious in some ways. I don't remember this movie well -- I think the dog was a showbiz dog that bought his own myth and didn't understand the real world (like Buzz Lightyear in dog form?) but it was up against Kung Fu Panda, which exceeded everyone's expectations, and WALL•E which is one of the true greats of the Aughts for the Oscar that year. This year basically marked the end of 3 nominees being the norm for Animated Feature. Only 3 nominees happened once more (2010) but before 2009, 5 nominees was a singular occurence.

Silverado (1985)
Oh Danny. You do not question why the presence of Jeff Goldblum. You just embrace the presence the Jeff Goldblum! Everyone knows that. This movie was up for two Oscars at the time (Sound & Score). I've never actually seen it but a ton of 80s stars therein (Glover, Kline, Goldblum, Arquette, Hunt, Glenn). And while we're looking at this image. Whatever happened to Lynn Whitfield?

Her (2013)
I was never as enamored of this as everyone else. But I miss back when everyone loved Scarlett Johansson and was beginning to get excited about her range. 2013 was such an incredible year for her. Don Jon and Her in theaters and Under the Skin hitting festivals... and she's superb in all three of them in very different ways.

She's a series regular on Greenleaf. A nighttime soap on OWN.
Still hoping for " Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson" to happen... First 2003 with LOST IN TRANSLATION and GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, then 2013 with DON JON, HER and (kinda) UNDER THE SKIN. Hope we don't need to wait for 2023 to see at another Oscary turn again
( I know we can add 2001 with GHOST WORLD and 2005 for MATCH POINT, but it seems she achieves greatness in the 3's)

The further we get from 2004 the more I feel Vera Drake should have been nominated for more and maybe won BA and that Madsen was robbed,Swank is simply terrible in ps i love you infact the whole films a mess and i'm a big Swank defender but she can't do warm n girly
Agreed with everyone here-this is the worst decision I've seen the Academy make, and I include "Crash winning Best Picture" in that list.
You were rooting for The Aviator because you dislike Clint Eastwood, but, het, time has proven Million Dollar Baby to be a masterpiece.

I'm up for a re-watch of "An Education" which will give me a superb Carey Mulligan and the always delightful Rosamund Pike.
I can't wait for Nathaniel's reaction to these very unwise changes from the Academy. Not a solution and unnecessary.

No big deal, but it's a very rare error.
They could've gone with best stunts/stuntman/woman,best cameo,best nnewcomer to films anything but this.
Mark-they could have just expanded Best Makeup to five nominees. That was really the most egregious ceremony problem that faced them. But no, they decided to completely upend the entire ceremony in hopes of gaining viewers that won't tune in anyway.

I swear if she comes out with another knockout performance and be snubbed in favor of someone like J-Law. I'm going to lay some cans of whoop-ass.
@thevoid - I'm crossing my fingers for this year's Noah Baumbach upcoming comedy/drama (November 2018, I think): kinda hoping it works as an acting vehicle for her in the same way FRANCES HA worked for Greta Gerwig... And there's 2019's JOJO RABBIT (an Holocaust movie).

"Silverado" was also where Kevin Costner stole the show from some veterans.
I was given the first book on a 3rd date, and we set up the 4th date, and then he disappeared.
I still have the book, though. Strange but compelling stories..
I am using Netflix from last 2 years and find it the perfect for streaming high definition videos and watching desired movies. You should read edubirdie.com review now. I was not aware from such updates in Netflix but you made it easy to understand.
