Netflix in September: Black Panther, Breakfast Club, Mr Sunshine

Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share!

Ready? Let's get right to it...

-God I loved this house.
-Me too.

The Keeping Hours (2017)
Hmmm. Carrie Coon (♥︎) and Lee Pace (♥︎) in a supernatural haunted house movie -- how have we not heard of this one? *does quick google search* ah, no theatrical release, that's how. Should we watch?

-It is his duty to report back to his country. And, as king, it is your duty to protect ours!
-I'm well aware of my duties, General. I cannot just let him die, knowing we can save him.

Black Panther (2018)
One of Black Panther's best qualities is that the hero is actually constantly consulting with the women in his life. He's no lone wolf with passive female support as so many movie heroes are. Available to stream on September 4th in case you'd like a refresher before Oscar season. I'm still expecting a huge haul of nominations for it as well as a win for that idiotic "Popular Achievement" whatever that the Academy is cooking up.

-What's your poison?
-Vodka
-Vodka?! When do you drink vodka?
-Whenever.

The Breakfast Club (1985)
Ally Sheedy was too cool for school... and soda machines apparently.

I'll be your groupie if you'll be mine.

A Star is Born (1976)
This is not new to Netflix but it's leaving on September 15th so we wanted to highlight in case you'd like to see it before the new Oscar-buzzing version with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper hits in October. All three of the previous A Star is Born films have received Oscar love. The 1937 film received 7 nominations including Picture, a special Oscar, and a win for its screenplay. The 1954 version received 6 nominations including in both lead acting categories but didn't win anything, (tragically considering its quality). And the 1976 version, this one, received 4 nominations in craft categories, winning for Best Song.

Summer Catch (2001)
I had to gif that one because Jessica Biel's "whooooo" was such a funny thing to land on. Remember Freddie Prinze Jr? Weirdly he just does voice acting now. I didn't remember his voice being especially memorable, did you?

You been thinking about what I said? About the kiss?

Scarface (1983)
I did not cheat! This is what I landed on in streaming roulette. Glad it was Pfeiffer and not an all male gangster scene. Recently wrote about Scarface here

RUN!

10,000 BC (2008)
I saw this in theaters. Lolz, why self, why?! It was utterly ridiculous and surely will look much cheaper streaming.

You fool, why are you not translating? What did that man just say?

Mr Sunshine (2018)
I would like some translation, too, please. This series airs once weekly on Netflix (I didn't know they did that?) and stars two of South Korea's finest, Lee Byung-hun (Terminator Genisys, The Magnificent Seven) and Kim Tae-ri (The Handmaiden ♥️ ). So I really wanted to watch it but neither are really in this episode, which is such a strange choice for a first episode! It all appears to take place in flashback so Lee Byung-hun's presumably lead character only appears as a framing device in this first episode. Inbetween there's lots of politics, history, little children experiencing tragedy, and general mayhem!

Sorry to say that Black Panther will go down as the most overrated movie of the year...I really really wish it were better but there are just far too many technical flaws in terms of editing, green screen, CGI, etc.

I liked Antman and the Wasp more and I never thought I'd say that at the beginning of the year.

With If Beale Street Could Talk, Spike Lee and Viola Davis, The Academy don't feel forced to give a BP nomination to Black Panther anymore.

Freddie Prinze, Jr. also had a short stint as a WWE writer.

I was talking to an impossible crush about "Lilo & Stitch" the other day and now I guess we have to Netflix and chill.

On Freddie Prinze Jr. having an unmemorable voice: Well, the same could have been said of Mark Hamill before he fell into voice acting. #BestJokerEver.

Jfc. What's going on with this site?

I've noticed with any post mentioning Black Panther someone can't resist jumping into the comment section to say how it's overrated or not THAT good or [insert action movie] was better. We get it. Someone of you all dont like it. That's fine but can we move on? It's tired and stale.

@Volvagia-Oh Mark Hamill. Probably one of the best voice actors ever. Has anyone here seen the video where they took scenes from Return of the Jedi and put Hamill's voice of the Joker as Emperor Palpatine. HOLY SHIT! It made those scenes even better.

Keeping Hours was thoroughly watchable. I won't reveal the plot but it's more drama than horror. And Carrie Coon and Lee Pace were excellent.

Noah Centineo alert! He's in "Sierra Burgess is a loser". I know everyone is crazy about him right now b/c of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before".

I may check out "Keeping Hours".

I will definitely re-watch "Black Panther" at some point - just the sheer charisma of the cast amazes me, and they are delightful in their public appearances as well.

"The Emperor's New Groove" is a fun, silly, diversion, and will be a good watch when I'm in a bad mood or very tired.

Such a shame that Freddie Prinze Jr. doesn't do more on-camera work these days, because he has aged VERY well.

I'm also very intrigued by this Carrie Coon horror movie that I've never even heard of. Might have to watch it soon.
