Globe Fashion Pt 1: Superhumans and a Sorcerer's Apprentice

NATHANIEL:  Welcome to the return of Red Carpet Lineup where we'll be chatting up our favourite fashions during awards seasons. To talk the Globe red carpet, I'm joined by Ginny O'Keefe an actress and movie buff and Murtada, who you know as our podcast co-host.

Olivia, Julia, Melissa, and Rosamund

Notice I said "favourite" fashions with a "u" because OLIVIA COLMAN. I so dug the delicate chain-mail like top. Ginny, let's kick it off with you. Is this something you'd wear?

GINNY: I’m would say no. As much as I love Olivia Colman and I love the fact that she won, I’m not digging the chains. The black cape effect is perfect on her and I think the chains should be gone. She would look great without them. They seem a bit distracting.

But Julia Roberts, hand down I would wear. Oh my god. I did not expect Julia to throw down last night but she did. I’m a sucker for dresses with pants

NATHANIEL: It's two outfits in one!

MURTADA:  I thought Colman looked good but as with many of the attendees last night it was not a "wow" moment. What popped for me was Rosamund Pike who looked 8 feet tall in her Givenchy gown. That stopped me dead, as I was scrolling twitter.

GINNY: I love Pike so much. She has great style. I loved the jacket but my friend thought she looked like a magician’s assistant

NATHANIEL: Speaking of magician's assistant, I give you Melissa McCarthy.

GINNY:  I’m not digging the stars. I almost feel like the designer was like “hang on, let’s throw these bad boys on just for good measure”

MURTADA: This might be one of the best looks I've seen Melissa in. That color is bam!! Julia's look also stood out because of the design though I'm not a fan of skin tone outfits. Imagine it in a jewel tone, like Melissa's. Now we are talking !

NATHANIEL: I could not look at Melissa's gown without thinking "THE SORCEROR'S APPRENTICE"

GINNY: That’s what it looked like !!! It was bugging me all night. Now I need to watch Fantasia again.

NATHANIEL: I missed or totally misunderstood the story of Melissa sneaking 30 sandwiches into the Globes (what was that story about?) but I kept thinking she was up to magical mischief.

GINNY: She apparently was handing out ham sandwiches to everyone -- How the hell did she sneak them in?

MURTADA: Thats who Olivia thanked for the sandwiches? Well done, Melissa.

GINNY: So thoughtful.

Superhumans: Nicole, Lupita, and Danai

NATHANIEL: One person who could not possibly have accepted a sandwich was Nicole Kidman who looks poured into this dress (in a good way)

GINNY: I seriously thought the dress was painted on her. I loved it. Great color, too.

MURTADA:  Love it! She looked like a candy wrapper.

NATHANIEL: But was it more comfortable to wear than it looks or is Nicole above such human concepts as "being comfortable?"

GINNY: She’s Nicole Kidman. She feels no pain.

MURTADA: Did you guys notice the giant bow she had on her head? You can't see it in this picture.

GINNY: Not a fan.

NATHANIEL: I didn't even notice it which means I'll have to rewatch all the Kidman bits, damnit. 'What torture for me,' he said facetiously. But while we're on the topic of superhuman goddesses. I give you Lupita Nyong'o & Danai Gurira, from the kingdom of Wakanda.

GINNY:  I’d like to thank not only God, but also Jesus for Lupita. Lupita takes the cake for me. She can rock any color.

MURTADA: Both are perfection. Drama from Danai, sparkly minimalism from Lupita; I don't have to choose

NATHANIEL:  My only qualm about Lupita's outfit is that she wasn't wearing those brainy girl glasses she wore while presenting the whole night. For me they took the look up an unexpected 'this woman has it all' notch.

GINNY:  I wasn’t crazy about the shoulder piece from Danai. But I mean she’s gorgeous.

MURTADA:  Vogue has a video of them with Michael B in an elevator. HOT. It was my salve after the awards show ended with those crazy awards.

GINNY:  I screamed when I watched that video.

Amy Adams and Claire Foy

NATHANIEL: This is a strange retroactive thing to say about Amy Adams' dress but this look screams to me. "I know i'm going to lose twice tonight"

GINNY:  Hahahah. Seriously what does Amy Adams have to do? Bite the head off a chicken?!

NATHANIEL: Don't you mean eat a raw bison liver?

GINNY: I mean whatever works.

MURTADA:  Not only is the dress subdued, she was, too, all night. Does Amy have an inside source at the HFPA who told her the results before hand?

GINNY: She was seriously robbed for Sharp Objects. I love the color on her but the dress all in all is just “blah”

NATHANIEL: Right. I was going to say it's "tired" but that has too many connotations that I don't at all mean. I just think it is more of a dress you wear to be pretty when the night isnt about you.

GINNY: It’s the dress you wear to a friend of a friend’s wedding

NATHANIEL: But Amy will survive and return for another awards season as she always does! Her husband is already going gray in a very silver fox way so she's won at life many times over.

MURTADA:  How about Claire Foy? I like the color on her but the fit is off. As it is always with Prada.

NATHANIEL: Prada shade.

GINNY: Claire’s dress looked really cheap to me. Like a bad prom dress. Prada is gonna get me for that. Emily Blunt's dress did nothing for me either.

NATHANIEL: No free gowns for you Ginny

GINNY: One more fashion house out for my blood.

MURTADA:  Agreed that neither was a standout. Emily in particular has looked gorgeous so many times at the Globes before. And on her Mary Poppins press tour.

NATHANIEL: I like the gown! I just think it's more editorial. I can image it looking totally amazing in an editorial spread with a different hairstyle

MURTADA: The hair was too simple

NATHANIEL: I suspect she's saving up her energy for the Oscars. But will she be nominated even? It's looking less likely. Why have people turned on Mary Popppins Returns already. Awards season is so fickle.

Gemma & Gaga

MURTADA:  Did you guys notice that Lady Gaga and Gemma Chan wore similar dresses? Both Valentino, both humongous in size, with big trains?

GINNY: Gaga definitely got more attention.

MURTADA: Maybe because Gemma did not dye her hair to match her dress.

GINNY: LOL. I love the hair. And her huge Giuseppe Zanotti shoes

NATHANIEL: Gemma is so beautiful she *could* have pulled off royal blue hair

GINNY: She is seriously one of the most gorgeous humans I have ever seen. She could rock a paper bag. The color is great, but the execution of the dress is kind of underwhelming

The blue on Gaga, though, just pops

NATHANIEL: I was underwhelmed with Gaga (which is a weird sentence to type). I would have liked the dye job to match the gown more closely if she was going there. And why was all the color collected at the center.

MURTADA:  Gaga was ready for a coronation that never came.

GINNY: The gown is a nod to the OG Judy Garland.

NATHANIEL: Who also lost *sniffle*

MURTADA: I liked the hair, it's a Gaga touch. She has to take it a bit further than others would.

GINNY: There can be 100 people with hair in a room and 99 of them don’t have blue hair...

MURTADA: LOL. She got a roast instead of a crown. Yikes!!

NATAHANIEL: It's exceptionally unwise to not believe in Gaga (hence the absurdity of the 100 people in a room bit) but I have to confess to both of you that I have trouble believing that she'll be able to top her Venice pink look at the Oscars.

GINNY:  That look was flawless. The whole aesthetic was amazing. From the flashing lights to the rain coming down and everything in between

It better rain beautifully on Oscar night

NATHANIEL: Flawless and dramatic, prefaced by the arrival by water. If her star hadn't already been born, it would have beeen that day.

MURTADA: Both of those looks are Valentio. I wonder what they are cooking for her in Milan for the Oscars?

NATHANIEL: Sadly there is no way to arrive at the Oscars by water.

GINNY:  Valentino is in the lab as we speak. They will build a moat if they have to.

CONTINUE TO PART TWO, a few more goddesses and the men who went beyond traditional menswear.

Kidman I didn't like that colour does her no favours.

I was underwhelmed by GaGa mainly cos of the stunning pink in Venice

What was Kate Beckinsale doing there and what was with the hideous dress

JLC looked best.

Take note Hunger Games: Danai Gurira is the girl on fire

Lupita and Danai (and MBJ and Chadwick) rocked the red carpet. I thought they'd won the fashion award, hands down, but there were so many good looks.

Gemma's gown packed a punch, but was a bit messy. It was so impactful, though, that Gaga almost seems diminished beside her.

Nicole's and Claire's dresses did opposite things to their bodies. Nicole's flattered hers enormously. Claire's... well, I don't need to say more.

Olivia looked good, but not quite spectacular. I liked Melissa's gown and her glorious stars more than I probably should. Rosamund's look didn't work for me, but I love that she went for it.

But I think Julia wins this round. So easy and elegant and different. Loved it.

Kidma looked poured in to her dress... great figure!

But she is such an unanimated figure. She looks like a wax figure in Madame Tussaud's museum.

She has the annoying habit of shrugging her shoulders in interviews and being a presenter.

Aack, you did not include the best dressed woman, Dakota Fanning! She was really beautiful. Your top row does look like a clown show. Julia did not work for me - it's too unflattering with the hair and the he/she look is too stark. Lupita is perfection. I love the cut of her dress.

LOL at Nicole. 90% of her career is going to awards shows with “Keith.” She would present an envelope.

Melissa McCarthy looks like they took apart Mickey Mouse's wizard hat from Fantasia and sewed it into a garment.

...And now I'm actually reading the article and see that was specifically mentioned. Lol. Great minds?

Julia glowed. She stole the night. She looked smashing.

Melissa McCarthy loves purple lol!
This is reminiscent of her Emmy dress.
The stars are cute!
Glad she lost weight and looking better!
