FYI, Ford v. Ferrari is campaigning as an Original Screenplay.
Two Popes will be placed in adapted. Moonlight was based on a play and they put it in adapted.
The title Marriage Story is intentional it aptly encapsulates the film. It’s about a marriage of dichotomies and dualisms. NY vs LA, stage vs screen, work vs play, family vs friends, actor vs director, performance vs authenticity. It may be hard to comprehend that throughout the film as we witness Charlie and Nicole fall apart but it's the final sequence that Baumbach really reconciles the dichotomies. He reveals to the audience that he was not his intent to show how different each side of the dualisms are, but to shine a light on the overlap, the grey areas, the messiness of trying to draw lines in the sand. Marriage Story story starts with them writing about how their marriage was, and as soon as the lawyers are hired that story is distorted and these people who still love each other become uglier and uglier as their marriage story is manipulated for the courts. That's why the ending is perfect, because it ends with the letter once more, reiterating their marriage story written by themselves and the evidence of a residual love that will always exist.
Nat, are we ALL aware that Zhang Yimou's Shadow is a lock for a nomination at cinematography, production design and costume, IF they care to remotely promote the film?
I hope I don't sound spoiled, but is there any way the podcast can be available on Spotify? It's much more user-friendly. I love your podcast, it keeps me sane during Oscar season.
When I wade through so many movies every year, I do it for movies like Marriage Story. I enjoyed it so, so much, especially since I live near so many of the LA locations the movie clearly despises. Alda was wonderful, but the trio of Driver/Johansson/Dern were just spectacular. Also love that you mentioned the wonderful actresses playing her family, and shout out to the hilarious scene from Martha Kelly.
We get it. Purses are cute. But, in the end, they’re one major hassle. We live in the modern age of on-the-go, to-go, and need-it-yesterday lifestyles that require more than your average shoulder bag or backpack
