Frozen II enjoys a mammoth opening weekend.
Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 5:33PM Did you see Frozen II this weekend? Everyone else did. It grossed a whopping $127 million. The big 'Let it Go' successor is "Into the Unknown" but clearly audiences are still very much into the "known" every weekend at the box office -- sequels continue to pack movie houses. Meanwhile Parasite and JoJo Rabbit and Pain and Glory, three success stories of platform releasing, all started to wane this weekend. They're now losing screens and momentum after two months of growth. Precursor awards and top ten lists and year end hoopla basically begins after Thanksgiving so if they're lucky they'll get a strong second wind. We'll see.
Sadly the superb Mr Rogers picture, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, opened somewhat quietly with only $13.5 million in wide release (which seems low for Tom Hanks). GO SEE IT, IT'S AMAZING.

Saw THE IRISHMAN. A remarkable film in virtually every way.
Also saw PARASITE for a second time. What a fiendishly great screenplay.
FROZEN II - disastrous script, exquisite animation. So much wasted potential, but I enjoyed myself enough.
THE IRISHMAN - Impressive and moving as a cumulative experience, if a bit sloppy. The first half didn't work for me, but I loved the last 90 mins.
A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD - Such a creative biopic approach. This is wonderful - cried through most of it.
I saw 'Ford vs Ferrari" and really enjoyed. This is very satisfying movie in every possible way, cast, script, and direction and yes a is BIG SCREEN movie with those exciting racing scenes. Damon and Bale both have their star moment. But I was really impressed by John Bernthal as Lee Iacoca who should be a bigger star. The boy who plays Bale's son Nosh Jupe is a very natural child actor.
I saw Marriage Story. I loved it with the intensity and passion you all seem to have for Parasite and Pain and Glory. I loved Liotta, I loved the social worker, I loved everyone and everything.
Peggy Sue -- perhaps I have undersold my passion for MARRIAGE STORY. I am obsessed with it, too. Cannot wait to see it again.
Saw ATLANTICS in the theater. h/t to Nick D. for the nudge. What a beautiful movie with just a wisp of magical realism. Glad I got to see it on the big screen.
Also finally got my BF to see PARASITE. It was great to see it a second time around. And he loved it too!
Saw BOOKSMART on DVD- it was really funny in parts, but a little uneven and just good in the end.. Nobody told me that Eddie Redmayne and James Hamblin had a love child who plays the part of the super rich kid who can't buy friends....
Saw Beautiful Day ... and loved it. Very impressed ,with Matthew. Cried through half of the movie.
I saw The Report and was astounded. Every bit the equal of All the President's Men, which is a high compliment, taking an uncinematic story and turning it into something exciting. Best edited film of the year. Adam Driver is perfection, but then again, isn't he always? Too bad about the weird roll-out.I just hope it eventually reaches its maximum audience.
It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was a huge dud for me. Matthew Rhys is ok and Chris Cooper steals every scene he's in. But surprisingly, Tom Hank's was a TOTAL washout. Completely miscast. Tom Hanks was robbed of nominations for Captain Phillips and The Post. It'll be a shame if this is the performance that ends the drought. Instead of How Mister Rogers Helped Me Work Through My Daddy Issues, I'd much rather watch Won't You Be My Neighbor every day for the next year.

Not gonna lie, when Nick D compared the Heller film to SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK I actually put off seeing it. I loathed the Kauffman flick pretty profoundly

@Arkaan. bizarre. different strokes i guess. b/c I had NO intentions of seeing a Mr. Rogers film w/ Hanks until I *saw* the comparison to the genius film SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. Can't believe i will now be seeing it...
I saw a festival screening of THE AERONAUTS, in Sydney. I know it's not an awards film but the stuff in the balloon was very good - the flashbacks and non-balloon scenes were less interesting - and it was nice to see Himesh Patel in another role after YESTERDAY.
I'm frustrated that A24 does not have a regular distributor in Australia - only the biggest of hits get picked up quickly. We've had THE FAREWELL and MIDSOMMAR in cinemas but there are no release dates yet for THE LIGHTHOUSE, UNCUT GEMS, THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO or WAVES. No dates here for CLEMENCY or HARRIET either, come to mention.
At least we get to see the Netflix movies at the same time as the rest of the world - and some of them in theatres, too. Which is a big reason why I can't get on board with hating them!

Arkaan -- for what it's worth though I understand the comparison Nick is making, I also hated Synecdoche New York but loved A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
I admittedly wasn't so enamored with A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD - and actually thought Chris Cooper gave the most compelling performance!
We had a great movie weekend. Last night, we took in Ford v. Ferrari, and what a fun night at the movies. Grand old-fashioned entertainment. Full of cliches, but they all worked. Damon and Bale are terrific. Tracy Letts is gunning for the Best Supporting Actor nod.
Friday we saw Marriage Story, and four stars all the way. Adam Driver must win the Oscar.

@Jl: Exactly! I had the kids this weekend, and of course we saw Pain and Glory instead of Frozen II. I am positive I made the right choice, even though they hated it, hate me, and now want their mother to have full custody.
I saw The Irishman in a packed noon screening on Saturday. I loved it. I found the story totally compelling and the movie moved quickly. Pacino Pacino Pacino! So great to see him give a wonderful performance in a movie worthy of him in this century (Angels in America was a miniseries). Give him the Oscar. The de-aging did not bother me, but it was a little odd to see De Niro with blue eyes. I was just so grateful to have the experience of seeing this movie on a big screen in a theater full of people.
I am seeing A Beautiful Day with my mom later this week but am also a little disappointed by the gross, because I want Marielle Heller to do well. My mom reported to me that she heard it was about Mr. Rogers "and an old man" and asked me what that was all about, so I had to explain the plot to her... after that she was game (we go to around a movie a month together). I have to think that maybe Sony isn't marketing it all that well.
Saw a special screening of Knives Out. What a fun ride! Quite the clever update / reboot of a long-dormant genre. Every cast member gets their moment in the sun. I’ll admit I’d been skeptical of Ana De Armas prior to this, but she’s excellent here. Call me crazy, but I can see her and Jamie Lee Curtis getting Globe nods in their respective categories (yes, even with the limited number of spots in BSA).
I saw three fantastic films:
Knives Out - This was pure entertainment and great turns from the cavalry of side characters. Loved Daniel Craig and Chris Evans in different type roles.
Waves - a touch melodramatic, but gripping throughout.
Marriage Story - Well written, well acted, and emotional. Just great.
We saw THE REPORT and both really liked it, it's a solid political-procedural thriller. Adam Driver does a great job in the lead, Annette Bening was swell as Diane Feinstein, and all the supporting players from Jon Hamm to Corey Stoll to Maura Tierney turn in stellar performances. Recommend.
