SAG Nominations

by Nathaniel R

It was a surprising morning at the SAG nominations with Bombshell coming in hot with 4 nominations (!!!) and Parasite becoming only the second foreign language film ever nominated for Oustanding Cast. In other news we saw the first chink in Netflix's considerable Oscar-seeking armor today as The Irishman and Marriage Story both arguably underperformed and Dolemite was shut out. (And, as always, we've investigated the "Cast" nominations to see who was left out.)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

Christian Bale (“Ford v Ferrari”)

Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”)

Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”)

Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”)

In a surprising state of affairs -- though not as surprising if you remember that SAG nominations often skew “earlier” buzz than what’s happening in December, Taron Egerton, Leo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale are all accounted for rather than later openings like Robert DeNiro, Adam Sandler. Netflix push Eddie Murphy also failed to win them over...

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:

Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”)

Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”)

Lupita Nyong’o (“Us”)

Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”)

Renée Zellweger (“Judy”)

It’s the Globe Drama lineup with Lupita Nyong’o in the place of Saoirse Ronan from Little Women (which has not yet opened -- again showing that SAG isn’t as December focused as some awards bodies... except apparently when it comes to Bombshell?

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:

Jamie Foxx (“Just Mercy”)

Tom Hanks (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”)

Al Pacino (“The Irishman”)

Joe Pesci (“The Irishman”)

Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Here’s a mild surprise though the role is large and meaty: Jamie Foxx!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:

Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”)

Scarlett Johansson (“Jojo Rabbit”)

Nicole Kidman (“Bombshell”)

Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”)

Margot Robbie (“Bombshell”)

Another big surprise: Nicole Kidman showing up for Bombshell though the buzz has almost entirely been for Charlize and Margot. That said SAG likes Kidman more than the Oscars do (remember she even got a nomination for The Paperboy! You’ll remember that Kathy Bates was mistakenly entered in Lead so she was not eligible here. This is a tough break for Zhao Shuzhen and Florence Pugh though..

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:

“Bombshell” (Lionsgate)

“The Irishman” (Netflix)

“Jojo Rabbit” (Fox)

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Sony)

“Parasite” (Neon)

No Marriage Story feels like a shock. BUT three cheers for Parasite which is a major get. It’s only the second fully foreign language film ever nominated in this category after Life is Beautiful in 1998. The only other sorta film to achieve that is Babel (2006) which was in multiple languages though a lot of English as well.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture:

“Avengers: Endgame”

“Ford v Ferrari”

“The Irishman”

“Joker”

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”

The Irishman is a really strange nomination here given all the action films out there in the world.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries:

Mahershala Ali (“True Detective”)

Russell Crowe (“The Loudest Voice”)

Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”)

Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”)

Sam Rockwell (“Fosse/Verdon”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries:

Patricia Arquette (“The Act”)

Toni Collette (“Unbelievable”)

Joey King (“The Act”)

Emily Watson (“Chernobyl”)

Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series:

Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”)

Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”)

Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”)

Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”)

David Harbour (“Stranger Things”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series:

Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”)

Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”)

Olivia Colman (“The Crown”)

Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”)

Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series:

Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”)

Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”)

Bill Hader (“Barry”)

Andrew Scott (“Fleabag”)

Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series:

Cristina Applegate (“Dead to Me”)

Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”)

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”)

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series:

“Big Little Lies” (HBO)

“The Crown” (Netflix)

“Game of Thrones” (HBO)

“The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)

“Stranger Things” (Netflix)

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series:

“Barry” (HBO)

“Fleabag” (Amazon)

“The Kominsky Method” (Netflix)

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)

“Schitt’s Creek” (CBC Television)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series:

“Game of Thrones”

“GLOW”

“Stranger Things”

“The Walking Dead”

“Watchman”

I hope Ronan gets in for Little Women , and next year both her and Winslet get in for Ammonite!!

No marriage story in ensemble makes total sense. Outside of Alda, who else do people think about when they think of the actors in that movie. At least in the case of Bombshell there are so many moving parts to the cast that even when you don’t think of the main three there are many other small parts they all interact with. Marriage Story isn’t really an *ensemble* that pops as they all often work separately, too. I know this isn’t consistent with other years but as a stand-alone ‘snub’ it makes total sense to me and I had predicted it.

Did Irishman really under perform only because of the DeNiro miss? It still got four nods.

PARASITE is major. Roma didn’t get anything, right?

Parasite is looking stronger than ever, by my viiew. I had hoped that if SAG had gone for Murphy, it would have brought along Wesley Snipes somehow as an actual/not second lead supporting player. Snipes was fantastic in Dolemite.

Hagerty, Liotta, also Howard, Merritt Weaver and MARTHA KELLY ^^

Julie Hagerty is worthy of a nom.

It was a risk all along that awards groups wouldn't be excited about Little Women.

Frankly, it's not an exciting project. You can do the liveliest, most stylish version of Little Women yet, and it's still the 1,097th remake of a novel written in 1868, aimed at teenagers. Of course it's well done and of course Ronan is great in it. We all knew that before anyone even saw it.

But nobody asked for it. And you can't fault people for not feeling too enthused about it, when it seems like such a waste of everyone's time, and always did.

It's not like A Star is Born you can change *everything* except the loose plot outline. It's still the Marches, still the 1860s, still Concord, MA. Beth dies and it's sad. There's piano. Who would be excited about that?

Not including Marriage Story in ensemble makes no sense whatever. Honestly one of the best ensemble performance of the last couple of years. Happy for Parasite though...

Right- sure- no one was asking for Little Women. But what? We were all eager for The Joker or The Irishman?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Jamie, you're making my point for me. No, on its face Joker has the same headwinds working against it that Little Women does—ugh, why this movie? Why now? Why again? What's new?

But it captured some weird zeitgeisty tiger blood energy and literally made a billion dollars. I have much more respect for what Gerwig did than what Phillips did. But I don't know if Joker would be getting all these awards if it was sitting in the can, waiting to be released on Christmas.

Joker is a bad project for a lot of reasons. But it's a "good" (or successful) project because it's so...shameless and provocative. It's good at attracting eyeballs. I'm not *shocked* that Little Women (which the world hasn't even seen yet) hasn't bested it in that respect.

JF- I agree. Just wish some movies that did not involve toxic masculinity could also get notice and raves this year.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I'm loving this condensed season. A lot less copying and pasting among awards bodies and a lot more surprises. It will be genuinely interesting to see who makes it on Oscar morning.

But that Supporting Actor line-up is a snooze. I can't believe they swapped out one Oscar winner (Anthony Hopkins) for another (Jamie Foxx)! Yes, I know Brad Pitt hasn't won an Oscar for acting, but he has one for producing.

@JF & Jamie - I am living for your conversation + love you both so much now. My afternoon thoughts are now occupied. So many things to think about.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

Parasaite is a huge threat for winning Picture now. Though I still think Scorsese is getting director.
Bale is definitely getting in now as per usual.
Still holding out for Awkwafina.
Go Nicole!

One big question: John Lithgow must have accepted the Ailes role knowing that it might be an Oscar catnip. But what happened? I have not seen it, but is the role too small? Not showy enough? Cause there is no traction there. Russel Crowe is playing the same role and he is everywhere.

Jesus Christ...I just looked it up and realised Kidman has been nominated every year this decade for a SAG award, except for one (2015).

That's some actress of the decade stats.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterrona

No love for Endgame for its ensemble? FUCK YOU SAG!!!!

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

She might even get nominated for changing her tampon, rona

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Kidman also wasn't SAG nominated in 2012, 2014, or this past year's ceremony though...

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterArlo

@arlo

You are right. The way the dates on the IMDB awards page are laid out make it a bit confusing to decipher.lol!

Still impressive how often SAG goes for Kidman, and how consistent she's bern with them since the start of the decade.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterrona

SAG do Lupita right again after being the major precursor before Oscar last time to give her the win. BAFTA and Globes went with Lawrence which was gross. I am also interested in how small Lithgow’s role is in Bombshell that he turns up nowhere but Crowe in the miniseries is everywhere.

Its a sagged day for Little Women n The Farewel 😕

I tink Little Women still can rebound in time for Oscar glory. Its the super late release day tt is hurting it.

I thot Knives Out w its huge, starry cast n critical + commercial hit is rite up SAG's alley for an Ensemble nod? Guess the nominating committee has diff taste this yr...and its good tt it keeps the non list fresh n surprising, unlike the same 90++ members o u kno who.

All said, it's such a nice surprise tt Parasite got in agst all odds, n Scarjo finally scores for not one, but two nods! 😁

Imaging being an actor and not voting for Alda, Wever, Hagerty and Liotta. I just can't get over it.
