SAG Nominations

by Nathaniel R

It was a surprising morning at the SAG nominations with Bombshell coming in hot with 4 nominations (!!!) and Parasite becoming only the second foreign language film ever nominated for Oustanding Cast. In other news we saw the first chink in Netflix's considerable Oscar-seeking armor today as The Irishman and Marriage Story both arguably underperformed and Dolemite was shut out. (And, as always, we've investigated the "Cast" nominations to see who was left out.)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

Christian Bale (“Ford v Ferrari”)

Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”)

Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”)

Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”)

In a surprising state of affairs -- though not as surprising if you remember that SAG nominations often skew “earlier” buzz than what’s happening in December, Taron Egerton, Leo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale are all accounted for rather than later openings like Robert DeNiro, Adam Sandler. Netflix push Eddie Murphy also failed to win them over...

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:

Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”)

Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”)

Lupita Nyong’o (“Us”)

Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”)

Renée Zellweger (“Judy”)

It’s the Globe Drama lineup with Lupita Nyong’o in the place of Saoirse Ronan from Little Women (which has not yet opened -- again showing that SAG isn’t as December focused as some awards bodies... except apparently when it comes to Bombshell?

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:

Jamie Foxx (“Just Mercy”)

Tom Hanks (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”)

Al Pacino (“The Irishman”)

Joe Pesci (“The Irishman”)

Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Here’s a mild surprise though the role is large and meaty: Jamie Foxx!

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:

Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”)

Scarlett Johansson (“Jojo Rabbit”)

Nicole Kidman (“Bombshell”)

Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”)

Margot Robbie (“Bombshell”)

Another big surprise: Nicole Kidman showing up for Bombshell though the buzz has almost entirely been for Charlize and Margot. That said SAG likes Kidman more than the Oscars do (remember she even got a nomination for The Paperboy! You’ll remember that Kathy Bates was mistakenly entered in Lead so she was not eligible here. This is a tough break for Zhao Shuzhen and Florence Pugh though..

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:

“Bombshell” (Lionsgate)

“The Irishman” (Netflix)

“Jojo Rabbit” (Fox)

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Sony)

“Parasite” (Neon)

No Marriage Story feels like a shock. BUT three cheers for Parasite which is a major get. It’s only the second fully foreign language film ever nominated in this category after Life is Beautiful in 1998. The only other sorta film to achieve that is Babel (2006) which was in multiple languages though a lot of English as well.

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture:

“Avengers: Endgame”

“Ford v Ferrari”

“The Irishman”

“Joker”

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”

The Irishman is a really strange nomination here given all the action films out there in the world.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries:

Mahershala Ali (“True Detective”)

Russell Crowe (“The Loudest Voice”)

Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”)

Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”)

Sam Rockwell (“Fosse/Verdon”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries:

Patricia Arquette (“The Act”)

Toni Collette (“Unbelievable”)

Joey King (“The Act”)

Emily Watson (“Chernobyl”)

Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series:

Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”)

Steve Carell (“The Morning Show”)

Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”)

Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”)

David Harbour (“Stranger Things”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series:

Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”)

Helena Bonham Carter (“The Crown”)

Olivia Colman (“The Crown”)

Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”)

Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series:

Alan Arkin (“The Kominsky Method”)

Michael Douglas (“The Kominsky Method”)

Bill Hader (“Barry”)

Andrew Scott (“Fleabag”)

Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series:

Cristina Applegate (“Dead to Me”)

Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)

Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”)

Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”)

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series:

“Big Little Lies” (HBO)

“The Crown” (Netflix)

“Game of Thrones” (HBO)

“The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)

“Stranger Things” (Netflix)

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series:

“Barry” (HBO)

“Fleabag” (Amazon)

“The Kominsky Method” (Netflix)

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)

“Schitt’s Creek” (CBC Television)

Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series:

“Game of Thrones”

“GLOW”

“Stranger Things”

“The Walking Dead”

“Watchman”

No Antonio Banderas... lol

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Snubbing Marriage Story in the Best Ensemble category is my annual reminder that I should never ever care about this awards.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Other than Renee and Laura, I can't decide who will win the other film awards. Happy for Lupita and Taron's nods. I hope they carry over to Oscar.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Impostor, you're back! Banderas was never going to make it here. Don't embarrass me

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

That Parasite nod is stunning. I legitimately think (since it has the support of the actors), that it can win best picture.

Little Women better pray it Phantom Threads its way to the Oscars. If it does killer box-office over the holidays, maybe it still has a chance.

I still think the four major acting categories are still fluid - there will surely be some surprises on Oscar morning in Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, I think.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

They must've hated KNIVES OUT

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne (The Real One)

Over the moon about Taron Egerton. I was worried that he might be completely overlooked for most of the season, but he’s peaking at the right time. A BAFTA nom seems like it could be an easy get for him, could he possibly make it all the way to Oscar?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I'm loving that Cynthia Erivo is on track for Globe, SAG, BAFTA and Oscar (even though we all quietly think that she's the likeliest to achieve the first 3 then miss the last - so a true snub).

I don't particularly care for Harriet (who does?) but I'd really enjoy an Oscar nomination for her - black excellence in a mediocre film should be rewarded and show the studios that all talent should be pushed for awards, even with poor reviews... true equality will of course be when Viola Davis gets automatic nominations for lacklustre work in forgettable, Oscar-begging movies (HI HELEN MIRREN)...

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Sad for Knives Out, would have gotten my vote for Ensemble.
Disappointed Erivo makes it in for such a boring role when there were legitimately great performances elsewhere. That category is feeling like Actress 2005 when there were great performances available but awards shows said “No, we like mediocrity this year”.
I’m thinking Bombshell here is like Trumbull’s a few years ago, leads SAG nominees but only gets 1 Oscar nomination.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharlea

Looks like Scarlett may get her double nominations after all. So well deserved! I would have given her the win for Don Jon but of course Lost in Translation and Under the Skin have devoted fans.

It would be a nice reward for one of the century's indispensible movie stars. Rooting for her.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJF

Can I also say how weird it is on the TV side that they give THREE individual nominations to The Morning Show (Aniston, Carell, Crudup), yet snub it in Ensemble and zero individual nominations for Big Little Lies (even though actors are obsessed with Kidman and Streep), but gets an Ensemble nomination?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

I feel like Egerton will be a person that gets nominated for everything and misses Oscar like Diaz, Kunis and Chalamet.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJW

i know i'm not saying anything new, but i just don't understand the individual / cast nominations. BOMBSHELL gets three individual noms and then a cast--indicating they loved all the actors in that film. MARRIAGE STORY gets three individual noms and no cast nod--what gives?

regardless, thrilled that PARASITE got a cast nom as that cast was brilliant all around and i wish more of those names were showing up elsewhere. i wouldn't be utterly shocked if it won for cast. it's a tremendously popular movie.

also, thrilled for lupita who is just so, so good in US. wesley morris in the NYT magazine just had a fantastic piece about her / this performance.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

I hope this means one of the actors from Parasite will get a surprise acting nomination in January.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge

Figured the unexpected but strong critical love would translate here for Lupita. The actors guild wasn't going to fail her unlike HFPA.

Jennifer Lopez continues to rack em up!

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterWithering Looks

Man alive, these nominations were Oscar-morning level surprising. I am here for no De Niro and for Parasite. I love it.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBen

Lesson learned: when he's in an Oscar vehicle, always predict Christian Bale.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMark

HBC for The Crown?? She was in basically one episode. And overacted at that????

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRdf

I'm worried for The Farewell's chances now outside of screenplay. Akwafina missing here feels like her Oscar chances are done

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

Go Taron go!!!

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterLucky

1 - Netflix also failed Jonathan Pryce
2 - Song Kang-Ho is the new Marina de Tavira

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

This list doesn’t surprise me as a SAG member. The guild usually nominates (and later votes) along these lines:

- default nominees (Dinklage, Handmaid’s Tale, Mrs. Maisel)
- starstruck nominations (ScarJo x 2, Kidman, Aniston, Witherspoon)
- new-&-shiny-thing nominees, i.e., recent screenings/screeners (Bombshell, Ford/Ferrari, The Morning Show, Mrs. Maisel)
- consistently well promoted nominees (Erivo, Egerton, Jojo Rabbit, all things Netflix)
- the year’s undeniable nominees (Parasite, Fleabag)
- headscratcher nominees (Crowe, Applegate)

Clearly, Little Women failed to impress (although response was enthusiastic at the screening I attended); the committee watched Watchmen (hence the stunt nod) but it otherwise went over their heads (and the nominating committee has been immune to Regina King in the past); and they loved Bombshell (as did the audience at the SAG screening I attended).

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

PS. I think they loved Knives Out —just not enough. And Lupita was another undeniable.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

Since 2000, SAG has matched Oscar 4/5 or 5/5 every time except 2013, where it went 3/5.

So it's looking like it could be Bale, DiCaprio, Driver, Phoenix and either Egerton, Banderas or De Niro.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

@George- I am hoping Cho Yeo-jeong shows up in supporting actress. She was the MVP in that movie to me.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

YAY for Catherine O'Hara and Schitt's Creek.
BOO for Watchmen being eligible but Regina King being overlooked.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAustin

Having seen Little Women this week post Globe nominations, (I know. It is brilliant. I DIED) I totally understand the snubs. It's more challenging than you'd expect and didnt play well to my friends who were unfamiliar with the story.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterchasm301

Some fun surprises all around. And Lupita certainly earned whatever plaudits come her way this season. Us is not a perfect film but I have a feeling it'll be among the most beloved/memorable 2019 releases 25 years from now, long after the awards bait fades into obscurity.

I caught up with Waves yesterday and, boy, is it a shame not many people have seen that film. Trey Edward Shults takes a lot of risks that pay off beautifully. Sterling K. Brown would have been a nice addition to the film awards circuit this year.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterW.J.

Snubbing Marriage Story in the Best Ensemble category is my annual reminder that I should maybe care about these awards.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterbeyaccount

@working stiff, I think Applegate's nomination isn't much of a headscratcher. She received great reviews for her role, and has been nominated at all the major awards bodies (Emmys, Globe, Critics Choice). She's even well loved by the SAG voters - she got three nominations for her two-season show, Samantha Who? If there is anyone who can best Phoebe Waller-Bridge, it's her.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

I think they passed on De Niro, because they're giving him lifetime achievement award this year and wanted to avoid giving him a competitive award this year. Still think he will be nominated for Oscar. Eddie Murphy is not going to happen now. Egerton will gain momentum tomorrow at Baftas, but still think that afer last year's Malek win, he will not get an Oscar nomination. Bale seems vulnerable too. Surprised that DiCaprio gets so much attention for being DiCaprio. He was good at it, but still. Oscar predictions: Phoenix, Driver, De Niro, DiCaprio & Pryce. Driver winning

Errivo seems like Chalamet for Beautiful Boy, Really hoping for Nyong's, who was great (as opossed to her Oscar winning performance). Theron, Johansson and Zellweger seem like locks and the fifth spot will go to Ronan, in my opinion. Johansson for the win!

Foxx seems like Gandolfini for Enough Said. Expecting the Globe lineup to reapeat at the Oscars, though Alan Alda replacing Hopkins would be very nice. Pitt will win, undoubtably

Supporing Actress seems like a wide open race, predicting Bates, Bening, Robbie, Dern and Lopez nominated at the Oscars, with Dern winning, obviously.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermoviefilm

No Ensemble nomination for Marriage Story could be telling for its chances at winning Best Picture. I figured it was at least in the running for the win even if it wasn’t the frontrunner, but it definitely seems to be shaping up to a race between The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In fact, if there’s a potential spoiler in the race, it might be Parasite. I don’t necessarily think it’s likely, but it feels possible. And if Tarantino/Scorsese split the vote in Best Director, I could definitely see Bong Joon-ho taking that award even if it doesn’t win the top prize.

None of the major categories appears to have a clear, solid frontrunner yet (although I think Pitt and Dern are close), which is neat.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

Even when Streep is nominated I never love SAG nominations and always find them bewildering.
No nominations for Little Women or The Farewell?
No Marriage Story in Ensemble?
And as for Big Little Lies- only a best ensemble with no individual nominations. Streep and Kidman were killing it this season. And instead they nominate Moss in THT in which was probably a badly written season for her character. And I love The Crown but Coleman had nothing to do and HBC appeared on what? 2 episodes? She might as well have guest starred. The Crown sadly was all about the men as far as stories in Season 3. The women had nothing to do!?

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Also, I don’t know why some people are already counting Banderas out just because of this SAG snub. SAG has never been as inclusive of foreign films as other awards groups (Parasite nomination notwithstanding), and this is the first major nomination he’s missed. He’s very likely to still get a BAFTA nomination since they’ve historically been very kind to Almodovar films. The SAG snub will leave some lingering doubt leading up the the nominations, but he’s still very much in this.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEdwin

@ Joe: You’re right. All things considered, Applegate really falls into both the default and Netflix groupings. I personally could not have been less interested in her performance or the show it came from after watching an episode. I guess I’ll give it a closer look now.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

Yeah, if there's any headscratcher in that category, it isn't Applegate—it's that Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, who has won this award the past two years, wasn't nominated.

¿Dónde está, Banderas?!

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

The headscratcher for me is the Best Actress nod for Toni Collette in Unbelievable while co stars Merritt Wever and Kaitlyn Dever were snubbed.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJames

@ Mareko: That was a shocker, but blame it on O’Hara, a sentimental (and deserved) nomination that even managed to get her show in the race over Veep‘s last hurrah.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

Edwin is right. SAG also snubbed Cotillard, Rampling and Huppert. Also, Woodard and Mary Kay had no chance here, so basically this is shitty awards group. Worse that the Critics Choice.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuest Sag Contributor

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuest BFCA Contributor

This Awards season is shaping up to be a backlash year. HollywoodSoMale. The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hwood - which are pretty clearly now the two front runners for Oscar's best picture - are bloated self-indulgent stories that glorify toxic masculinity & render women silent. The media gushes over these male directors as auteurs while female directors (and their films) languish outside the conversation.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterHustler

Unless there is a Kathy Bates nomination, I can't breathe. Oh well, at least I have some old nudes of her from the internet.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Thrilled Helena Bonham Carter earned an individual nomination for The Crown, even with no supporting category. She only has two starring episodes, yes, but she is wonderful in them.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMike

Actor - still fluid,Bale and Edgerton could miss and I think Edgerton will miss replaced by Banderas, shame for Murphy but i'm holding out for him kicking out a fine but not award worthy Di Caprio,De Niro doesn't deserve it this time,2 Popes's Pryce may rally on Oscar morning.

Actress - I feel this is the 5,Nat has been saying all year that 2 non white actresses will make it,Akwafina or Woodard could replace Erivo,Ronan will be back next season.

S/Actress I doubt Kidman or Johansson are getting in,Bates and Pugh will replace them

S/Actor Pitt,Hanks,Pesci,Pacino locked and loaded, the 5th nominee a shock nomination for Tracy Letts.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

The Irishman glorifies toxic masculinity? Lol how?

No Marriage Story is a clear joke.

Feel confident in Banderas, and quite surprised with Bale, as well as DiCaprio, and even more so with Tagerton. He's maybe best of the three (tho they all do great work) but it isn't a performance deserving of a nod.

De Niro does some great work but it's like Wahlberg in Boogie Nights The Fighter, or Tom Cruise in Minority Report, and on and on. A lead actor (doesn't happen as much with women, off top of my head) who carries the film but isn't the magnet for individual recognition. Maybe the role isn't showy enough and maybe the carrying part means having to defer. I don't think he gets in, tho I'm not confident.

December 11, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMe

Maybe I’ve noticed this and forgot, but they don’t do supporting categories for Television?
