This just in. The Academy has announced their plans for which awards aren't going to be shown live this year and it's not actually as bad as we thought it would be in that it is not as MANY as we though it would be. They're leaving four off the air: cinematography, editing, makeup, and live action short. Not being as bad as we thought, though, is NOT to say that it is any less horrific. The decision remains as tone deaf in its disrespectful, self-destructive, and against-the-point way as it always was. It's easily in the top two or three most terrible decisions that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has made in its entire 91 years.
Once you start demoting categories to "less important" you're sending a message to the world that the craft of filmmaking doesn't really matter; just look at the gowns and sit through the commercials which make us money...
Once you've devalued your own identity, you should expect to find less respect from the multitudes from that point forward. Once you've made yourself after the image of your inferiors (aka other awards show, none of which present all their awards live and ALL of which are less popular than the Oscars) you can expect lower ratings and less respect... akin to what they have!
Decisions matter. Actions have consequences. I don't think it's a coincidence that since the Honorary Oscars have gone off the air that Americans seem even less knowledgeable and interested in classic cinema than they were before. The Academy has lost the thread and forgotten the whole purpose of their mission which is to honor the movies and support the industry.
How to talk sense into them? One wants to grab them, shake them, and quote Raising Arizona at them.
That's your whole goddamn raison d'etre!
We should all be using the hashtag #PresentAll24 (created by Amanda Spears) to let the Academy know how we feel about this. It's gross and it cannot stand.
President John Bailey needs to go and the problem is slightly worse than we feared because more members of the Board of Governors need to go, too. In their press release about the bastard stepchild categories this season they reveal:
The executive committee of six of the Academy's 17 branches volunteered to have their respective awards presented under the new system, and that the Academy selected four of them.
So obviously Cinematography, Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Live Action shorts need new executive committee members. Surely some of them reasoned internally that they were "taking one for the team" but the team in this case is ABC, not the Oscars. The team is certainly not the movies or the Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences of it all! We are "Team Movies" first and foremost. Networks will come and go as will contracts to host the Oscars (we pray that AMPAS wises up and leaves ABC as soon as the contract is up) but the movies should not consider themselves so impermanent.
Under the Academy's new foolish decision, whatever category is not present live on air will be guaranteed a spot on the next year's Broadcast but this, too, is unwise. You cannot game the system forever. This year we will likely be losing both of Vice's acceptance speeches (Makeup and Editing where it's arguably the frontrunner) one of Cuarón's (Cinematography) and a speech from a live action short director (who knows which) and on the surface that might not sound terrible. Who really passionately looooves Vice and will be hurt to not here Adam McKay thanked? And it would have been a weak part of the ceremony anyway to watch Cuarón give four or five separate speeches. But you cannot game the system forever (eventually we'll lose a historic moment or an entire ceremony highlight because of this) and whether or not these four categories would give us great moments this year is not the point. It's not the point at all. It's the principal of the thing. And it's what it says about the Oscars. And about the movies. And about the future. These are the problems. Not missing Editing this one year.
If The Academy doesn't course correct immediately, we feel confident in saying that there will be no creative categories on the air by 2024 or 2025. They'll be shunted off to another night just as they are at the Emmys (you know, that less successful show that Oscar really shouldn't be trying to emulate).
To close here are four wonderful recent moments from those four categories that were broadcast live. Our favourite night of the year, that once-a-year eventful celebration would have been all the worse for losing these moments and others like them.

@Hayden, from what I can gather the Academy / Powers That Be wanted to choose more higher profile tech awards in the first year of the rotation (and Cinematography and Editing are probably the most high profile after Picture/Acting/Directing/Screenplay awards) so that the 'lesser categories' if you can even call them that (I can't, they're all equally important in my opinion) don't feel unduly targeted / maligned. Which tells you right away that the Academy at least anticipated that there would be hurt feelings and backlash against this decision. Yet they decided to plow along and do it anyway.
@Carlos - You're totally right. The point I was trying to make (with sarcasm that did not come through) was that even Lumley, who seems pleasant, was a bomb. Just another note that we do not need a host at all. Sorry for the confusion ... I'm a comment loser.

Every category is important for a movie. I have no idea about the difference of Sound and Sound mixing at all, but one doesn't work without the other. I personally love Make Up and Hair.

I hope every winner in this year´s show would make a comment about this. Make a f****ing stand. And honestly cutting these 4 categories how much time will they really save? 20 minutes? This is an insult to the art and crafts of cinema. And to all we the faithful audience. What is going on in the world with all these terrible leaders and decisions? It seems the Fuckademy would love to be something like the MTV Movie Awards, at least they are pushing in that direction.
Here is what needs to happen. Nominees have to say they will not show up if ANY awards are presented during commercial breaks. What if Glenn Close announced she wasn't showing up?
I'd imagine the studios and producers and distributors wouldn't sit well with this. If Vice wins only Makeup and Editing but neither moment gets a proper spotlight, that's a major blow to the film's profile (and future box office).
Everything not being presented have no Disney films represented. Total bullshit.

As far as I know, they are still showing us the nominees, the announcement of the winner, and the winner's speech in full. The main editing they'll be doing in the walk-up to the stage part. So if VICE does win, they will still have the proper spotlight. Albeit not live.
Not too much to add except that I wish the show was LONGER! I've long thought that they should put back in the honorary awards and have a "documentary" style part of the Oscars that they can show on PBS or HBO or Facebook or something. 15 minutes devoted to each honorary winner showing the breadth of their career. They could even throw in some of the "lesser" awards on that show, then they could just go all Golden Globes for the main show.
The in depth show wouldn't get high (or any ratings) but the real fans would LOVE to see more of what the Oscars are all about.
Wtf! Cinematography is what makes a movie a movie.
While the broadcast is showing the edited replay of 4 not-live awards, what will be happening in the theater unseen on TV? Will the theater audience see the edited reply on a big screen or will they talk among themselves?
If the ad-break winners choose to curse or thank everyone they have ever met, just to make the editing more difficult, I would not blame them.
With out cinematography and editing there is no cinema.
an up and coming actor might be so excited to be asked to present at the Oscars. Then when they get their category they’ll be like - oh it’s one of the commercial break categories. Maybe I’m being presumptuous but perhaps Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Tessa Thompson or even last years acting winners are getting the commercial break categories.
Just have to add my agreement that cinematography IS the movies, how ridiculous. The Disney/ABC connection is scandalous. Gotta say though, has anyone else noticed how slooowwww Cuarón walks to the various stages to accept an award? Someone could give him a goose and cut 60 minutes off of the Oscars as it looks like he will win more than one.
I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but the Academy also announced that -for the first time- the ceremony will stream live, for instance, at the Oscar website. And there we will be able to see the ceremony complete, without commercials. We'll see these four awards being handed out, live. It's still horrible, but, al least, we die-hard fans will be able to watch the live-stream.

Another point: What about the rumors that they will do away with the age-old tradition of the acting winners of the previous year presenting the acting awards for this year? Apparently, the acting awards would be presented by big-name actors. Say what? It's like telling you previous winners that they're expendable.
