"(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again"

The race for Best Original Song nominations at the Oscars is just beginning. Here's Elton John and Taron Egerton singing what we assume is the end credits song for Rocketman. It was written specifically for the biopic. And a week before this film premieres we'll hear two new songs in Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin...

The only Original Songs that have already played in movie theaters in 2019 (that we're aware of though there's surely a few more) are  "Do-Dilly-Do (A Friend Like You)" from Missing Link, "Turning Teeth" from Under the Silver Lake, and "Catchy Song" from The Lego Movie 2.

Of course good luck to any movie song trying to become the next "Shallow" -- those don't come around every year.

I'm so tired of this film and it's not even out yet.

The world premiere is today at Cannes Film Festival!!!

I'm optimistic that "Rocketman" will be better than "Bohemian Rapsody" on account of Elton John still being here and participating in the project. It was frustrating how many things were changed on "Bohemian Rapsody" for no reason.

The song is fine, even if I feel it is a little bit monotone. I'm surprised "BR" didn't have an original song contender and that "A Star Is Born" was needlessly afraid that "Shallow" won't win due to internal competition as I'm fairly sure it would even with "I'll Never Love Again" and/or "Always Remember Us This Way" nominated (both were better than remaining nominees).

I'm excited for this one!!! Some of my colleagues have already seen a few excerpts from it and they tell me it's just beautiful, really capturing the spirit of Elton and his music. Let's see the word is from Cannes.

Really excited for this!

TheDrMistery: Of course, if they DID push for three song nominations, I don't think that Adapted Screenplay nomination would have happened.

"I'm optimistic that 'Rocketman' will be better than 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'" Could it be any worse? Because that's an awfully low bar to clear.

@markgordonuk, you and me both.

It better be a better film than fucking Bohemian Rhapsody. That way, we know who we can blame for that piece of shit.

The Dead Don't Die has a title song by Sturgill Simpson that features surprisingly prominently throughout the movie. Could see it getting in if the movie gets any traction.

There have been heaps of original songs but nothing much to trouble Oscar yet:

Super Cool by Beck, Robyn & The Lonely Island (Lego Movie 2)
Swan Song by Dua Lipa (Alita: Battle Angel)
Do You Remember by Ellie Goulding (Fighting With My Family)
Don't Give Up On Me by Andy Grammer (Five Feet Apart)
Willow by Robert Pattinson (High Life)
Broken & Beautiful by Kelly Clarkson (and other songs from Ugly Dolls)
Wonder by Rachel Platten (and other songs from Wonder Park)
Carry On by Rita Ora and Kygo (from Pokémon: Detective Pikachu)
and probably many others I've missed.

But I agree that the songs from Rocketman and Aladdin are the first high profile ones likely to get some awards attention this year.

I’m here for Carly Rae Jensen getting her first Oscar nom for “Wildflowers” from TEEN SPIRIT.

Surprised the didn't try something more "sentimental", a ballad.

The song is fun and evoke his more brash songs. It'd make a nice nominee if the film is a hit (although it can't be a hit - these sort of songs don't chart anymore).

As for ALADDIN. That movie looks likes it gonna be savaged and I highly doubt it'll get anywhere close to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST numbers and they didn't nominate that movie's original song. Plus Guy Ritchie appears to (unsurprisingly I might add) be completely unable to direct a musical sequence.

Better not to underestimate human incompetence. The Twilight books generated the fanfiction Fifty Shades. Both the books and the films of the latter make those of the former look like works by Dostoieski and Orson Welles - and they're far from it. Hope Rocketman to be good; Taron Everton to me is one of these bland stars of the new generation, maybe an interesting character like Elton John can bring him to life.

Wouldn't surprise me if Elton WINS the Golden Globe in Original Song, only to be entirely MIA from the Oscar line-up.

Every movie I went to for weeks had the same trailers, until I was sick of these unseen movies, with their loud demanding stupidity.

Since I am too polite to turn on my phone, I would shut my eyes and put my hands over my ears, trying to drown out Aladdin, Dumbo, and The Lion King.
