What did you see this week? John Wick Chapter 3 was the big ticket (and the series is growing with each installment). I went to The Hustle due to my Anne Hathaway completism, Poms bcuz old ladies, and, on a whim, Under the Silver Lake (better late than never?). The latter was dumped into theaters a month ago and has only earned $46k... remember when that was getting publicity a year ago? It's weird how movies get delayed and delayed and then not pushed once released. It was never likely to be a hit -- it's very strange and quite long -- but surely it could have done more than $46k with a star (Andrew Garfield) a buzzed about director (or was David Robert Mitchell's breakthrough It Follows too long ago to have that buzz mean anything?), and a genre that's easy in its familiarity (noir) even if the storyline was anything but.
A few other notes...
• A24's drama The Souvenir (reviewed) had the weekend's best per screen average
• The superbly shot documentary The River and the Wall (reviewed) quietly crossed the $100k mark in its third weekend.
• The instant-romance drama The Sun is Also a Star which had the smallest screen count of the new wide releases this weekend (at 2073 screens) finished 8th at the box office with a 2.6 million gross.
• Among wide releases, Tolkien (reviewed) had the worst hold from the previous week, dropping 66% in revenue in its second weekend though Poms and Uglydolls aren't exactly generating great word of mouth either, dropping 60% each.

I enjoyed The Hustle... Always nice to see Anne Hathaway in comedies...wondering if Meryl coached her on all those accents!
I went to an early screening of "Rocketman" - it's fun! Not a masterpiece but not an embarrassment. It also has an early contender for FilmBitch Best Line Reading 2019: "Forget all this bullshit, who wants to go to a party at Mama Cass's house?"
I went to watch JOHN WICK 3 PARABELLUM and its metropolitan and baroque setting, along with videogamish fights set the deal. Keanu is the Star but Mark Dacascos, as the (main?) antagonist, is the secret weapon
I saw "The Nun" (2018) and thought it was a lot of classic horror fun.
A couple of re-watches of Frozen and Tangled and a first-timer in The Eyes of Orson Welles.
My friend and I watched “Under the Silver Lake” last week and to this day, I still don’t know what it is about. 😔
Same friend insisted that we watch “Wine Country” on Netflix and somehow only the white wine joke made me laugh.
I coaxed that same friend to watch “Greta” with me and he complained the whole time. Don’t blame him. Did Neil Jordan really direct that awful, awful film?
When that same friend suggested we watch “The Hustle”, I said no. I just don’t find Rebel Wilson funny and I still can’t understand why people find her funny.
In honor of Cate B. birthday i re-watch the 2007 best actress line-up: Laura Linney (The Savages), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose), Ellen Page (Juno) e Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth - The Golden Age).
A great year, pity that Cate, as splendorous as she always is, is the weakest of the field...
I watched:
Rocketman: too many similarities with Bohemian Rhapsody, too many biopic cliches. Across the Universe style scenes are fun, but end up blurring together. Egerton has a great voice.
Booksmart: Kaitlyn and Beanie are incredible and should be nominated for the Globes at least. They're as wonderful as the rest of the ensemble is charmless and grating. I ended up a bit conflicted on this because the parts of it that are fantastic really expose the parts of it that are sloppy and half-baked.
My Brilliant Career: Judy Davis wow. And the way this captures nature is so elemental and breathtaking. And young Sam Neill. Wasn't really into the story, but the craft was luscious.
I caught up on two more unsuccessful Foreign Film (oops International Film) Oscar submissions - Italy's Dogman and Hungary's Sunset. Dogman's first hour and a half is extraordinary, you never know which way things will develop and the relationship between the two main characters raises many questions (just what is the dynamic going on?), with the two main actors superb. But the movie's last 15 minutes veers into disappointing cliches and kind of flattens out the overall effect. Sunset is very very slow and I found it superior to Nemes overrated Oscar winner Son of Saul. Effects that felt arbitrary and mannered in that one feel more fully integrated here. But in the end, what is it all for? The ending seems to be saying something, maybe too much, but what exactly, I have no idea. Two frustrating near misses.
Saw Rocketman and really enjoyed it. Yet is it wrong that I couldn't help but think that Taron Egerton was channelling Christian singing to Satine when Elton was singing Your Song to Bernie. I was waiting for the eyebrow raise. A homage to a homage?
