• The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Yorgos Lanthimos does it again... but define "it". I go back and forth on this picture but I'm just glad I was witness to Nicole Kidman doing kinky anesthetia roleplay with Colin Farrell. I once threatened to write 1000 words on Kidman's performance in this and didn't. Missed the window but damn, she's fascinating in it.
• 20th Century Women - Easily wins the title of single most underappreciated perfect thing in recent years
• Doctor Zhivago - If you adjust for inflation it's still in the top 10 movies of all time. Of those 10 it's by far the least discussed, though
• Year of the Dog - Remember this promising Molly Shannon performance which she's totally made good on since? The supporting cast is so fun, too: Regina King + Laura Dern!

Moonlight (2016) on Netflix
What a movie. It remains a miracle that this won the Oscar so don't ever let anyone tell you that the preferential ballot for Best Picture is a flop. Also, it's so wonderful (and was not a done deal given both Hollywood fickleness and intangible elements of luck/fate with showbiz careers) that both of these young actors have real careers now. So good on Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders for working their mutual breakthrough.

Jesus' Son (2000) on Prime and Hulu
This won two acting medals at the very first Film Bitch Awards (!) for Samantha Morton and Billy Crudup. It's underdiscussed today (and we don't remember it well) but we sure did love it at the time... time to revisit now that it's so easy to see for the time being. In related news: Samantha Morton may be the most underappreciated of all contemporary actors that you could reasonably call a genius without being hyperbolic. She's been brilliant so very very many times.

I recall seeing Year of the Dog at Sundance. It's not the easiest watch, but it's worth it. Molly Shannon is great, but Laura Dern just eviscerated the screen in this one. She's sneaky and broad at the same time.
Just watched Iris last night for the upcoming Smackdown! I think 2001 is going to have one rollicking discussion.

Deer. was a terrible movie and Kidman was her usual unemotional self
I am anxious to see BLL2 as Streep says Kidman is good.

Moonlight is sublime (as is Nicholas Britell's incredible score, which haunts me still). Even though 20th Century Women is absolutely brilliant—and I'm a Santa Barbara boy—it's hard to deny that A24 backed the right horse in that year's Oscar race. Just wish A24 had released 20th Century Women earlier in 2016 so it could've had ample time to percolate.
P.S. Samantha Morton is the 20th Century Women of undersung, contemporary actresses!
I am generally not a Rebel Wilson fan, but I really enjoyed ISN'T IT ROMANTIC. It poked fun at the rom-com genre without being mean about it.
Every performance in 'Moonlight' is great - I wish that 2+ movies with a great role for Andre Holland would come out every year.
I adore Samantha Morton. Unbelievably talented. Have not seen this film but will now. I have hulu!
That said, it feels like she’s transitioned away from film doesn’t it. Only time I’ve heard if her these past five (ten?) years is her recent raves on television for Harlots + Walking Dead.
Isn't It Romantic faded for me almost immediately, but it's probably Liam Hemsworth's best performance and there's a really fun musical/dance number in the middle that made me wish they'd gone the whole hog and just made it a musical.
