Venice Lineup Announced

by Nathaniel R

Hirokazu Kore-eda is back quickly after "Shoplifters" with "The Truth" starring Juliette Binoche, Catherine Deneuve, and Ethan Hawke

Since we never get to go to Venice *sniffle* we can't grant them as much time as we do TIFF each year but here's a quick check in with their lineup of films. The festival kicks off on Wednesday August 28th and wraps on Saturday September 7th, just as TIFF's first weekend is in full swing. Telluride happens during all that, too --it's a busy time for cinephiles, critics, stars, and filmmakers...

  • About Endlessness (Roy Andersson, Sweden) the shortest title in competition at 73 minutes which is amusing given the title. We love Roy Andersson!
  • Ad Astra (James Gray, US)
  • Babyteeth (Shannon Murphy, Australia)
  • Ema (Pablo Larrain, Chile) *
  • Gloria Mundi (Robert Guediguian, France)
  • Guest of Honor (Atom Egoyan, Canada) *
  • A Herdade (Tiago Guedes, Portugal) *
  • The Laundromat (Steven Soderbergh, US)*

  • Saturday Fiction (Lou Ye, China) *
  • The Truth (Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan/France) - OPENING NIGHT FILM
  • Waiting for the Barbarians (Ciro Guerra, Italy)

I'm guessing the live performance of "Goodbye, Dragon Inn" will be Tsai sitting in a theater seat for 90 minutes eating sunflower seeds.

"Crash (1996, Canada) - the good Crash, the one by David Cronenberg"
Ha ha thank you for that.

(i.e. not the piece of garbage that to-this-day-bewilderingly won several top Oscars.)

Deneuve is so beautiful she makes Binoche look like Rachel Griffiths in her presence.

Nothing against Rachel Griffiths or her unique beauty!

I can see why you might leave it out (because it sucks, that's why) but isn't Noe's "Irreversible" playing as a restoration?
