MARRIAGE STORY question: as good as Laura Dern is in it, could it be argued it's a part pretty much any great actress would excel in? The recasting possibilities are endless. Jennifer Lopez's performance feels like it only could've been her.
Glad to hear you praise Maggie in Downton Abbey. She won 3 Emmys, 1 Globe and 1 SAG award for that role—which doesn't feel excessive compared to other awards magnets. There was always more to that performance than the supercuts of bitchy comments.
I think her wins stick out because she was always absent.
I don't agree with Smith being nominated for schtick.
Loved the podcast. Also coming to mind for Maggie Smith - her Oscar win for California Suite is basically a series of amazing scenes where she bickers with her closeted husband, played by Michael Caine, about her potential Oscar win. If you haven't checked her out in that, her scenes are absolutely delicious. Such a worthy win.
Smith's greatest performance will forever be the underseen The Lonely Passion of Judith Herne,It's just been released on Blu Ray in the UK and though the film is a bit of a drag,Smith is not.
She'll probably get a BAFTA nomination so she's bound to factor into the race a little bit.
She may not get the nomination but she'll most likely be one of the six or seven names people throw around in their final predictions.
Get it Maggie - always her number one Stan. Would make for a great posterised series! Haha
Murtada’s enthusiasm for all things jlo is completely charming & infectious. Makes me want to see Hustlers again :)
Does Maggie campaign anymore? I know she missed a nomination for both Marigold Hotel and The Lady in the Van when she had precursor buzz for both. I suspect that if she does campaign, she'll be able to slide in.
The thought of there being five ensemble performances better than HUSTLERS seems insane to me. I’m hoping SAG nominates them.
To me, Smith's wins stand out because she beat Christina Hendricks in 2012 (one of the best tv performances I've ever seen), and that was a travesty. Hendricks in that Season 5 of Mad Men showed far more than anything Smith has done as the Dowager Countess.
Guess I’m changing my name to Cate.
markgordonuk: you're OTM about The Lonely Passion....
