NYFCC loves "TÁR" and "Banshees of Inisherin"

by Nathaniel R

TÁR

The New York Film Critics Circle was founded way back in 1935 and they hold a lofty place in film history given their publishing-giant of a city and their own rich history of interesting choices. For their 88th awards TÁR and The Banshees of Inisherin emerged victorious with two wins each, though a few of the other wins were quite surprising...

Would you rather?

Jena Malone is expressing herself!Because we need an excuse to waste time following way too many celebs on Instagram, our biweekly poll. Would you rather?

• do bonding activities w/ your partner like Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody do?
• visit elephants with Lupita Nyong'o?
• fall asleep in a compromising position with Kate Beckinsale?
• get all dressed up with LaKeith Stanfield?
• indulge in soft sleepy sensual stretches with Jena Malone?
• parachute out of a balloon with Pom Klementieff?
• relate to JLo with Sandra Bernhard?
• flip around with Aaron Taylor-Johnson?
• take a private jet ride with Keke Palmer?
• travel to Greece with Molly Ringwald?
• eat birthday cake with Michelle Yeoh?
• befriend a cat with Garret Dillahunt?
or
• have a pilates session with La Pfeiffer?

Pictures are after the jump to help you decide.

Streaming Roulette Aug '22: Akeelah, Belle, Ingrid, and other wonders

Okay, time for this month's streaming roulette. You know the rules. We highlight new-to-streaming titles by freezing them on the scroll bar at entirely random places and sharing what pops up! Any requests?

-Did you hear the word?
-I'm not sure if you're saying 'imminent' or 'eminent'.

Akeelah and the Bee (2005) on Hulu
Whichever word they meant, we can use it in a sentence! (In 2006) "Keke Palmer's stardom is imminent" (In 2022) "Keke Palmer is an eminent celebrity". Have you seen Nope (2022) yet? Read our review. Don't remember much about this debut other than that Keke was charming as a child actor and that the great Angela Bassett played her mom... which makes Keke's much-shared imitation of Angela Bassett even funnier...

Review: Jordan Peele strikes again with thrilling overstuffed "Nope"

by Nathaniel R

We name them. We train them. We live with them. Some people work with them. But do we ever really know our animal friends? Since we can't speak directly to them, their emotions and thoughts are mostly guesswork on our part. Nope takes place largely at a horse ranch. It's run by the Haywood family, Father Otis (Keith David), son OJ (Daniel Kaluuya), and daughter Emerald (Keke Palmer). The Haywoods have been training horses for movie and television shoots for generations. OJ, perpetually tense, quiet, and observant, notices it quickly; something is off with the horses. But what? The answer, without spoilers, is this: they know it's a horror film before the Haywoods do.

What kind of a horror film it is, though, is another question...

by Nathaniel R

No sooner did we get caught up on trailers with Jurassic World and such than the Superbowl hits which brings with it a new wave of teasers and trailers, not all of them airing during the game (that's expensive!) but here are the latest via our Yes No Maybe So™ habit. Join in the trifurcated breakdwon in the comments...
