22 days till Oscar. Randy Newman, again !

Scarlett Johansson and Cynthia Erivo got all the press for being double-nominees this year at the Oscars but they were hardly the only ones. Others include Sound engineer Mark Ulano (Ad Astra, Once Upon a Time...) and special effects supervisor Dominic Tuohy (1917, Rise of Skywalker).  Randy Newman, nominated for both Original Score (Marriage Story) and Original Song (Toy Story 4) also got the double bringing his grand total up to 22 career nominations. Oscar's music branch can't get enough of him and he's also won twice before...

The longtime star composer, who is 76 years old, is unfortunately not in tip-top shape at the moment. Just this past week he cancelled upcoming tour dates after hip surgery. But he's been composing for so long that he's part of the unofficial American songbook now. Rolling Stone named his most recently album, Dark Matter (2017) as one of the top 50 albums of the decade. And here's Tony nominee Melissa Errico performing two of his best songs just a few days ago at our favourite cabaret spot here in NYC.

I really like his "Marriage Story" score (probably my pick from that terribly uninspired lineup).

The "Toy Story 4" song... well...

The Toy Story song is about stopping a suicide. Bleak!

I can actually fathom him winning Original Song - it's no worse than his winning TOY STORY 4 track and voters don't seem terribly enamored with FROZEN II or ROCKETMAN...
