'Parasite' and 'Jojo Rabbit' win ACE Eddie Awards

by Murtada Elfadl

Bong Joon Ho and Song Kang Ho celebrate their film's win

Parasite (edited by Jinmo Yang) and Jojo Rabbit (edited by Tom Eagles) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) respectively at the 70th Annual ACE Eddie Awards last night in LA. This is a huge win for Parasite at the start of the guild awards. Though there’s no direct relation between this award and the best picture Oscar - the last film to win both is Argo (2012) - it still shows broad support...

Consider that it won over the favorite The Irishman and its legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker. Jojo Rabbit was the only Oscar nominated film for editing in the comedy category. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was nominee here but not at the Oscars.

Taika Waititi and film editor Tom Eagles

Toy Story 4 won for animated film and on the TV side Killing Eve, Fleabag and Chernobyl prevailed. Here is a full list of winners:

Hooray for PARASITE! From Variety: "The victory marks the first time in ACE Eddie Awards history that a foreign language film has won the top prize."

I've been surprised how many of the conventional pundits are predicting that the editing Oscar will go to Thelma for THE IRISHMAN - just by virtue of its endless running time, lots of people are not going to think of it as the "best" edited film of the year.

Parasite is tight!

Parasite!!! This is so RICHLY deserved

"Parasite" is a miracle of film editing really which is vital to the success of the production. Overlong "...Hollywood" and especially "The Irishman" don't deserve anything for their editing - they should have been shorter by at least 20 and 45 minutes, respectively.

A film's running time is WAY at the bottom of criteria by which you should be evaluating editing. Schoonmaker's work on "The Irishman" is fabulous, and it has nothing to do with how long the film is and everything to do with the selection/arrangement of shots and the rhythms in and across scenes.

Happy for Parasite

I am so over the Moon for PARASITE, but I have a Feeling that BAFTA and the Oscar will go to FORD V FERRARI. Hope I am wrong, although the Editing is fabulous, too. But PARASITE Needs more then "just" "BEST INTERNATIONEL FILM"! It Needs Director, Screenplay, Editing and hopefully Art Direction AND Picture, too! Can I Dream? ;-)

Jonathan, I know but those 2 films I've mentioned don't justify their running times so I've mentioned it. "Titanic" is almost as long as "Thw Irishman" but the pacing is so great that you don't feel it. With "The Irishman" you can feel many scenes were reduntant, establishing the same themes over and over again. With De Niro playing all versions of his character, it was often confusing where we were in the story. For example it was confusing why we didn't get to see to Jesse Plemons' character after Hoffa was gone. He was right there. It all pales in comparison to "Parasite" where every shot had its rhythm and weight.
