Curio: The Adventures of Indiana Jones
Curated by Nathaniel R
Since we're celebrating the 1981 Oscars this coming weekend with the season premiere of Supporting Actress Smackdown it's appropriate to look at the movie from '81 that's inspired the most fan art over the years: Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Steven Spielberg's best film (what? Fight me) introduced one of cinema's greatest heroes, the stuffy professor / snake-phobic but otherwise fearless adventurer Indiana Jones. Jones has gone on to multiple sequels and will surely be rebooted at some point (sigh) with a lesser being than Harrison Ford in the leading role.
Some incredible artwork inspired by the original film and resulting franchise are after the jump...
J Scott Campbell has done lots of Indiana Jones artwork and from each film, too.
Painting by Jeff Bonker (purchase here). We're suckers for oil paintings and this particular shade of blue.
Adams Hughes designed card for TOPPS.
Geekhouse Creations offers up this grail tablet for home decor inspired by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Fanbilt Props offers up glowing sankara stones from The Temple of Doom.
For those who love a terrier (hi, Best in Show fans) here's Indiana as a terrier from Brian Rubenacker who specializes in dog art.
Here's another 'someone else as Indy' take -- Wolverine as Indiana Jones by Adam Hughes, Tim Townsend, and Matt Elder.
Love the reflection on Indy's sword here to cut the bridge abovee. Designer Rodrigo Pascoal grew up on the Indiana Jones movies. He is not taking submissions at this time and doesn't appear to be active online in the past couple of years but maybe still sells previous illustrations?
Inspirowl Designs sells this cool text poster on various products.
Here's a moody gorgeous piece from Kurt Ramschissel called "The Death of Marion"
FINALLY...
Check out this amazing animation project - this was five years in the (indie) making for the Dutch animator/designer Patrick Schoenmaker and debuted online in 2016.
It's too bad Disney+ didn't make this show into a reality. Lord knows they need the original content and they have immense franchise fever so why not?

Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" doesn't count?
Alrighty, I will fight you:
Spielberg's best films: JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, WAR OF THE WORLDS, LINCOLN
If we want to round out a Top 5, I could be persuaded to put RAIDERS there, but I'd probably lean towards SCHINDLER'S LIST or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN first.
E.T. for me is Spielberg's best film.
Wow. Some really impressive work here. Patrick Schoenmaker's
Animation project was a surprise to me, what a shame this wasn't given a better reception by Disney.
God does love a terrier... (Thanks!)
I love ET , jaws and close encounters but I totally agree with you nate , raiders of the lost ark is the best spielberg film! One of the most rewatchable movies ever made
You say (and sigh) that Indiana Jones will inevitably be rebooted at some time, that time was 1992 it's called "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" and I know a number of people who vouch for it but based on the single episode I saw your sigh is appropriate.
In my opinion, the best Spielberg movie is E.T. Such a marvel of a screenplay that is brought to life by a great storyteller.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a perfect adventure film
