Ranking ALL of John Williams' Oscar Nominations

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY earned John Williams his 54th Oscar nomination.

Last week, John Williams celebrated his 92nd birthday, so it seems proper to shine a light on the legendary composer before the month ends. After all, in January, he also became the oldest person ever to secure an Oscar nomination, as he got into the Best Original Score lineup with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It was his 54th honor - he's won five Oscars as well - making him the most nominated living artist and runner-up for most nominated individual ever. That record is still held by Walt Disney, with 59.

Did you see 'The Dial of Destiny' or pass?

The box office prelude to a mid-week Fourth of July (today) rested on Indiana Jones's 5th outing but he didn't truly deliver in The Dial of Destiny, a sequel that few people outside of Hollywood's money-obsessed board rooms  were asking for. Hollywood is discovering that it can't live on franchises alone. Problem is that's become Hollywood's ONLY strategy and all they've been investing in for some time now. Unfortunately for those of us who love the cinematic experience audience  increasingly lukewarm or chilly response to the big franchises isn't really morphinng into interest pointed at other moviegoing options. Hollywood has been training people to only care about franchises for years and now that they've "won", we're all losing!

Cannes: Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"

I was one of the lucky ones able to reserve a ticket to one of just two screenings of the hottest movie of 2023. So I felt like an intruder at the end, when a substantial portion of the audience clapped and cheered. I couldn't stop thinking of the incredible amount of money used to do absolutely nothing original or relevant. The good news, at least, is that those who feel a particularly special bond to the Indiana Jones franchise will probably enjoy seeing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

While James Mangold is no Steven Spielberg, it's important to note what he's up against here...

Train of Thought. If Harrison Ford can star in an action flick at 79...

You've probably heard the report that 78 year old Harrison Ford has suffered a shoulder injury prepping for a scene in the as yet untitled Indiana Jones 5. We've already heard his age mentioned in a joking manner around the web but we're not going to join in the ageism of that. We would just like to point out that if Harrison Ford is going to do this at 79 (his birthday is in a couple of weeks) why can't actresses get action roles at that age? Well, okay, they let Helen Mirren do it a couple of times but we can never have enough actressy action and James Cameron takes decades off between movies. 

Herewith a list of women who are similar age to Harrison Ford who we'd love to see in an action flick. Sorry not sorry...

• Joanna Cassidy (75) still popping up on TV and always fun to watch. Plus she has classic Harrions Ford sci-fi on her resume already
• Goldie Hawn (75) nobody wants The Christmas Chronicles to be her last film!
• Jacqueline Bissett (76) still gorgeous. Why not a comeback?
• Wai Ching Ho (77) already proved she could do action scenes with aplomb in Daredevil
• Blythe Danner (78) you know she's versatile with genre
• Leslie Uggams (78) because that bit in the Deadpool franchise is not enough
• Holland Taylor (78) still so fabulous and funny. Plus authoritative!
• Faye Dunaway (80) she has rage she needs to work out
• Tina Turner (81) somebody coax her out of retirement with a role as good as "Auntie Entity" again
• Jane Fonda (83) still has the body and fierceness for it!

Anthony Powell (1935-2021)

Just the other day, I was writing about Peter Ustinov's Poirot movies, praising their sartorial exuberance, their delectable Oscar-winning costumes designed by Anthony Powell. Not long after publishing that, while perusing Twitter, I encountered unexpectedly sad news. According to some of the stars he dressed, like Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley, the great Anthony Powell died at 85 years old. It happened just the other day and, while most movie sites seem to be ignoring the tragedy, here at The Film Experience, we couldn't let the news pass by unnoticed. Powell was one of the most fabulous costume designers in recent Hollywood history and one of the most generously rewarded, with three Oscar victories and three other nominations. Throughout his career, he dressed numerous stars and even more iconic characters…
