Variety Critics Choice nominees for Documentaries. I really can't with the randomness of 6-9 nominees (are there any rules) in 12 different categories. It's like CHOOSE. If you nominate everything there is zero drama and no reason to look at what's been chosen.

Cast This: The Next Indiana Jones

We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that. - Steven Spielberg.

We already knew the next Indiana Jones would not be Shia Labeouf, Crystal Skull notwithstanding. Now Steven Spielberg has indicated it might be a woman. Harrison Ford will be back, one last time, for the 5th film in the hugely popular series. But after that we might get Joan Jones? Indiana Joan? Spielberg also seems not to know the difference between first and last names.

The 5th Indiana Jones, as yet untitled,  has been announced as Spielberg’s next directorial project. It will be shooting in the UK next year. Which means we have a lot of time to fantasy cast the female Indiana. Who would be your choice?

Today's 5: Slim Shady and Bruce Almighty (among others)

Have you seen the newest picture of Mera (Amber Heard) from Aquaman? There it is to your left. This is remarkably colorful -- Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin level saturation on the color wheel -- though they'll surely fiddle with the color in post (sigh) since we can't have bright things. (Speaking of DC -- with Wonder Woman getting good advance buzz, should we be hopeful about Aquaman now?)

Anyway, Amber Heard was on the brain as one of today's curated 'anniversaries to use as mood boosters'  today. Ready? Let's go...

May 23rd Anniversaries

2016 Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp one year ago today.

Back to School with Realistic Movie Professors

by Kyle Stevens

Professor Indiana JonesAfter teaching for years as a graduate student, then as a postdoc, and then as a Visiting Assistant Professor, I’ve finally started a proper position as Assistant Professor of Film Studies. As semesters begin all over the country, I turned to thinking about my favorite on-screen professors. High school movies tend to serve as microcosms of society; they’re all emotional peaks and valleys, in-groups and out-groups, and the goal is to get out. In college movies, from Animal House and Old School to Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, the goal is to stay on the rip-roaring ride of university life.

Not surprisingly, college teachers don’t feature heavily in these movies. And in other genres where professors pop up, they’re not exactly realistic. Think Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor, Natalie Portman in Thor, Hugh Grant in The Rewrite, and so on. (Propriety dictates that I not comment on the realism of Bruce Humberstone’s 1952 Virginia Mayo vehicle She’s Working Her Way Through College.) Television doesn’t fare much better, as the patently absurd characters in How to Get Away with Murder or Transparent attest.

But here are my personal favorites. The Top Five Professors in Film..
