Critics Choice Winners

The all virtual Critic's Choice Awards were held tonight. Eternally handsome Taye Diggs hosted direct to camera, which must have been one of the easiest gigs ever. No audience to play to, no flop sweat if jokes failed as thy often do for awards show hosts. Just an obedient laugh track (meant to be ironic or...?) and the camera.

The Critics Choice voters often agreed with the Golden Globes including Best Picture for Nomadland which led the awards with 4 wins. But they went their own way in Best Comedy where Palm Springs took the prize. Sorry Borat but all was not lost because Best Supporting Actress went to  Maria Bakalova. The winners are after the jump...

FILM

PICTURE Nomadland

DIRECTOR Chloe Zhao, Nomadland
Chloe dedicated the award to their sound mixer Michael Wolf Snyder who died a week ago. He was just 35.

ACTRESS Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
Fun speech where she said Emerald Fennell directed with aplomb and will make fun of her for using the word "aplomb"

ACTOR Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Promising Young Woman
Nice to see this honored instead of Chicago 7 which has enough Screenplay prizes.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Nomadland

SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
She was genuinely stunned and "can't believe I'm standing here... sitting here". Yes, these virtual ceremonies take some getting used to. Love the headband as tiara. Strangely the nominees here didn't get clips but in almost every other category got them. And this was one of the first awards so they weren't out of time. Strange. Very strange.

SUPPORTING ACTOR - Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah

YOUNG PERFORMER - Alan S Kim, Minari
The little cutie from Minari cried all through his acceptance speech and said he hopes to make another movie soon. We hope so, too. How do little kids learn to take this as seriously as adults... or was he just crying because everyone in his room was surely crying?

ENSEMBLE - Trial of Chicago 7

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - Minari

COMEDY FILM -Palm Springs

CINEMATOGRAPHY -Nomadland

COSTUME DESIGN Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

PRODUCTION DESIGN Mank

HAIR AND MAKEUP Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA SERIES - Gillian Anderson, The Crown

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA SERIES - Michael K Williams, Lovecraft Country

COMEDY SERIES Ted Lasso

ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso

ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES Catherine O'Hara, Schitt's Creek

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES -Hannah Waddingham, Ted Lasso
"What is going on? What is going on?! You have no idea what you have just done!" We finally started watching this last night due to all the raves and it's so adorable and funny. Cute acceptance speech. Nice to hear someone thank their close friends in a meaningful way. People usually only thank their family members, spouses, or co-stars.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES - Daniel Levy, Schitt's Creek

LIMITED SERIES The Queen's Gambit

ACTRESS, MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES  Anya Taylor-Joy, The Queen's Gambit
In an unusual but lovely choice she only thanked the crew and talked about what a pleasure it was to watch them work each day. Hey, if every show is going to give you an award, why not niche up your speeches?!

ACTOR, MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES  John Boyega, Small Axe

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES - Uzo Aduba, Mrs America

SUPPORTING ACTOR, MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES - Donald Sutherland, The Undoing
"To honor me in my dotage, much appreciated" Haha.

COMEDY SPECIAL [TIE] Jerry Seinfeld: 23 Hours to Kill and Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia

And finally Zendaya was honored with the annual SEE HER award for women who are changing the world.

This awards show was incredibly cringe-inducing. Taye’s jokes generally weren’t landing.

The power of copy paste.

That kid is adorable. Not as adorable as Maki Itoh aka the cutest wrestler in the world!

Carey Mulligan for the Oscar win!

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

And now, we wait a month for SAG!

On the TV side: I hadn't considered that Emma Corrin would be such a big hit and that Olivia could go unrewarded for her work on the Crown. It will be interesting to see what netflix does as we get closer to the Emmys. That body is very different, but Corrin is a strong contender.

Happy to see Donald Sutherland win. He didn't get to do much on the Undoing, but he's a great actor who has had an interesting career, and is almost always award worthy. Even if his show was a bit of a mess.

Film: Things continue to be a race with supporting actress. I really thought Yuh-jun Youn would take this, especially with Minari hitting at the perfect time.

Very excited for Carey Mulligan, even if I'm feeling a bit sad for Viola (my top choice). I wonder if all of the Chadwick focus makes voters feels like they've done enough to reward Ma Rainey's?

The actor's races, as expected, are over.

Am I alone in thinking this awards body has never mattered? They’re not a guild so no Oscar crossover, barely anyone watches the show so no “publicity bounce,” and by rubber stamping all the frontrunners they make themselves irrelevant. I just can’t imagine the Oscar voter who would watch this and change or reinforce an opinion.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

Love the Maria Bakalova win. Although, if they were not going to give best supporting actress to Yuh-jung Youn, they should have landed her the See Her award instead to Zendaya. It would have made much more sense to give it to the asian actress aspiring to an oscar in which category only once another asian actress has win than to give it to the last Emmy winner who is already well to known.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Loving the variety in the Actress categories! Makes for such a fun season.

Currently thinking for Actress:

Davis / Day / Loren / McDormand / Mulligan

and for Supporting Actress:

Bakalova / Colman / Foster / Seyfried / Youn

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

@Joe G; Who's winning supporting actress in your mind?

@Paranoid Android: They don't matter beyond oscar predicting, to be sure.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

One other note. I’m curious where this Loren surge is coming from. How are people hearing the buzz about it when everything is just screeners and steamers? Seems like a reach to me. Kirby has shown up at all the right places despite folks thinking it’s a difficult watch, she’s too unknown, etc. Not sure why the demerits for her (and supposed pluses for Loren) would matter with Oscar when they haven’t mattered for all the other groups.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

@ Paranoid Android

Some Oscar voters are easily swayed by such things, especially in this week of nomination voting.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWorking stiff

Yay! Happy for Nomadland.

So much suspense in the Actress categories. SAG will be VERY interesting.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Daniel Levy - a carbon copy of his old man - Yikes!

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMora

I just want to give Alan Kim a hug.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeter

GlennfansVision: I don't care. Glenn Close is going to sweep and win the oscar.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Nice to see a pandemic isn’t enough to keep Hollywood from letting the same stuff win over and over, haha. So utterly lifeless and boring.

Paul Mescal not winning anything remains the biggest abomination of them all, full stop.

Get the SAG, Catherine O’Hara! Woo!

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManny

Will Alan Kim be our surprise stealth Supporting Actor nominee? I would love it! He was the best thing about Minari.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Camus

I like that Alan Kim gif better than the actual movie.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDMF

Andrew, these are also my predictions in the female categories!

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterleon

Glenn has supporting wrapped regardless of any lead up results.

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

ALAN KIM. That was adorable. I'm pretty sure he caught someone crying and he got caught up in the emotional moment. But he was a pro and thanked who he had to thank while tears flowed. I hope he got ice cream or something after that.

Nathaniel, glad you're watching TED LASSO. Such a delight of a show and I'm tickled for Hannah's win tonight from that show.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Do they not do best animated movie?

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPT

Bakalova, copy of Jennifer Lawrence in facial expression, movements and gestures. Do que need another one ? I like the tiara.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSusanita

GlennfansVision: After Oscar snub and SAG losing. We don't care. Glenn Close can win per write-in votes. She has the Oscar wrapped up regardless results.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterleon

Meh.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBart

Boseman and Kaluuya are pretty much locked at this point.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Glossing over all those tech awards and screenplays, but showed all of Taye Diggs's painful interviews, Lin-Manuel introducing every original song nominee (WHY???), and that long stretch of television winners. Make it make sense. I reallly wanted to hear Emerald Fennell's acceptance speech! I should have watched the Oprah interview.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWes

So happy for Carey. Hope it's a winning streak from here on in for her.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterKeegan

Slow news day, huh?

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterHildy

"Palm Springs" keeps appearing here and there.
Is there any chance it will appear at Oscars? It sure seems unlikely as of now, but would be interesting for it to get a surprise nomination somewhere.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterUnknown

Palette cleansing new article please. It doesnt even have to be an Alves, just anything but this banal tripe at the top of the page!

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

All week trashing the Globes and you vote the same!

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterVoronda

The winners of Critics Choice? Those who rightfully ignore them.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMonty

So, Chadwick and Kaluuya are definitely winning the Oscars now.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Yawn, NEXT.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBurt

Ew Michelle. At least Lead Actress is still up in the air for now.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterViolet

Oh wow.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterEureka

I hope that kid from minari gets a supporting actor nomination-its possible

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

As usual the Critics Choice only ever speak in Oscar predicting. In this case they said it's too soon for a third for Franny. They're also wrong about the unstoppable Close consolation award, so good for their poor predicting in this case.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterYolanda

Been trashing the Globes in order to become THE preOscars awards show and they have failed.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterCox Lurie

Happy for the prizes for Carey and Emerald!!

Love Bakalova but that is not a supporting performance. Let's hope that some nominees in the future will call out category fraud as Al Pacino did.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPP

Two more posts and this blight is off the front page. Do a couple of your post just a screenshot so we can be saved from this monstrosity.

March 8, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterWilly

We forgive you. Many of us would be sluts for screeners, immoral whores for loot and starry ceremonies.
