Tweetweek: How to sell a TV show and other nonsense

Please appropriately worship Sarah Schaefer's deadpan fabulous "How to sell a TV show in just 3 simple steps".

After the jump more fun pop culture tweets we enjoyed this past week so that you don't have to be on the perpetually disorienting hellscape of twitter...

I missed the "demon twink" discourse somehow but, this feels accurate.

i trust you're all watching WHITE LOTUS? If so you'll agree that this is the full truth.

and we have to end with the stoopidest but quite funny conspiracy theory of them all

LOL @ Demon Twink Starter Pack. Matt Damon's Tom Ripley is my favorite performance of his of all time.

The Shape of Water isn't my favorite, but I think Green Book handily takes the worst best picture winner of the '10s.

So when are we going to get that director's cut of The Devils as I heard Mark Kermode rant about wanting that film out after seeing a reference to it on Space Jam 2.

Honestly, there are only three Best Picture winners of the 2010s that I think will be regarded as good choices in the long run (12 Years a Slave, Moonlight, and Parasite), but the only one that will be regarded as a flat-out bad winner is Green Book. The rest are either divisive (like Birdman) or simply uninspired (like The King’s Speech). The Shape of Water is probably somewhere in between divisive and uninspired as a Best Picture winner, but no way will it ever be considered one of the worst.

I'm on Tweetweek!

I have finally made it!

Not awful, but The Artist is just dippy and unnecessary, especially with certified classics released that year (Tree of Life, Drive, Moneyball, Melancholia). It may be technically better than Green Book, but I’ll watch Green Book when channel surfing with family, and have no interest in ever seeing The Artist again.

I think The King's Speech is the worst winner of the 2010s as it's a paint-by-numbers Weinstein-produced biopic involving a Royal overcoming a minor disability (on paper, the baitiest film ever) in a year with any number of other strong choices. The Shape of Water was not my favorite (again, it won in a great movie year with any number of better options), but at least del Toro is a great director, and it had genuine heart.

I'd rather watch The Shape of Water than The King's Speech, Green Book, The Artist, or Argo.

The King's Speech is good (and kind of dull), but shouldn't have been best picture. It's our generation's A Man for All Seasons.

Green Book can be entertaining, but I'm not sure how good it is. Parts of it made me raise an eyebrow at the decision-making.

The other three are solid all around. I'd just rather rewatch The Shape of Water than the other two.

Better format for Tweetweek this time. Meh, Remains of the Day lunch box or GTFO.

August 2, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTruth Teller

Truth Teller -- this is the same format as always.

Ben & Others -- i'll never understand why people hate The Artist and Birdman. They're both clever, funny, and impeccably crafted. and we always complain that Oscar hates comedies.

I had huge expectations when I bought my ticket for The shape of water. I remember I didn't like it at all (does it get better on second view?), and it won best picture over Phantom thread! Crazy. Del Toro should have won for Pan's laberynth.

@Paranoid Android - The Artist is a sweet movie, and it's pretty good. I doubt I'd watch it with my brothers, but I do think it'd be a good choice on zapping alone. Berenice Bejo is such a delight. Worthy winner.

The Shape of Water isn’t perfect but to say it’s worse than The King's Speech, Green Book or Argo is pretty… YIKES.

August 2, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Nathaniel & J -- I think the Artist (slight) and Birdman (just a big smug) suffer in comparison to the competition. As they always do. Boyhood seemed like the frontrunner for the early part of the season that it felt like a bit of a letdown when something less special (for lack of a better phrase) ended up winning.

August 2, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

And for the record, this is how I'd rank them:

1. Moonlight (2016)
2. Parasite (2019)
3. Spotlight (2015)
4. 12 Years a Slave (2013)
5. Birdman (2014)
6. Shape of Water (2017)
7. Green Book (2018)
8. Argo (2012)
9. The Artist (2011)
10. The King's Speech (2010)

Incorrect Nathaniel, the last one had unnecessary commentary added between each tweet. Commenters hated it being pointed out. Surprised your memory is that bad or your health is affecting it.
