What did you see over the weekend?
By Ben Miller
For the second straight week, the story of the North American box office is about failure instead of success. While horror film Smile captured the top spot for the second straight week, David O. Russell's star-studded Amsterdam managed only $6.4 million on a reported $80 budget. Many are blaming the poor reception from critics and audiences (33% on Rotten Tomatoes, a measly B CinemaScore), but this feels like Russell's indiscretions coming back to bite him. Meanwhile, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, the first kid-focused film released in months, made for a solid 2nd-place showing.

Elsewhere, The Woman King looks to have legs. Despite some worry about its box office prospects, the highly positive reviews and word-of-mouth led to only a small percentage drop from last week. If the film keeps it up, it might be able to climb close to $100 million.
In limited theaters, the debuts of critical darlings and Oscar hopefuls Triangle of Sadness and Tár each had strong per screen averages. Tár expands on October 28th.
What did you see these past few days? It was a spooky movie weekend for me as I knocked out classics like Shaun of the Dead and The Blair Witch Project. I also watched the new Hellraiser on Hulu.

Victim people think gay people have it tough now,way worse back then,Dirk Bogarde is at his best.
Superman 2 the best Superman film with the best Superman/Lois Lane film pairing.
The Great Escape there was no-one like McQueen, great ensemble of quirky actors.
Grizzly one of the best Jaws imitators.
The Bodyguard in prep for the new biopic.
Madonna "out" Tik Tok video.
Amsterdam flopped as the trailer made it look like an at home experience.
In Dublin on Friday I saw The Lost King. Solid little middle England tale, Sally Hawkins lumbered with expository dialogue, nice old fashioned direction from Frears. 4 people in the cinema. Saturday night I saw The Woman King. Great fun, moved along nicely, very authentic looking fighting. Main screen in the multiplex, maybe half full. Following night, the dreadful Amsterdam. So tedious & boring, appalling waste of talent. Cinema maybe half full.
So grateful I have a monthly deal which means most screenings cost me about €2, otherwise I just wouldn't go for the most part.
Horror was my choice this weekend -- saw PEARL (which I liked better than X) in theaters then 4 years later than everyone else, I binged THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE which was pretty good! Everyone was right four years ago! Congrats all.
Werewolf by Night and Timecrimes was what I watched this weekend.
Saw Smile which was SO good for its first hour and 20 minutes or so but unfortunately does not stick the landing. Thought Sosie Bacon was fantastic.
I watched Catherine Called Birdy on Amazon Prime, and it was wonderful. It deserves much more attention! Bella Ramsey deserves a huge career.
Amsterdam flopped because of poor reviews and an unappealing trailer. I doubt most people know who David O. Russell is, much less anything about his bad behavior.
@jules — Exactly. The number of people who know anything about David O. Russell's personal history aren't enough to make an $80 million movie profitable. So they're not enough to make it unprofitable, either. The movie flopped all by itself.
Agree with the above two commenters. My guess is most people don't know who David O. Russell is, therefore I doubt his personal history would affect the performance of his movie at the box office (which is going through a difficult time anyway). I know his last three movies before Amsterdam did quite well at the box office, but one thing to consider is they all had Jennifer Lawrence at the height of her stardom.
Everything everywhere all at once finally. Aside the assured Oscar for best editing and maybe screenplay my fantasy is that Jamie Lee Curtis will go all the way through the award season snatching critics, globe, sag, Bafta and then the Oscar
Is it just me, or is it cause to celebrate that only one movie in the Top 10 is a sequel? And there are no Marvel / DC universe films in here? I often look at Top 10s and despair that cinema is being kept afloat by sequels and superheroes but this is so wildly refreshing to me.
