Holdovers and Halloween: A Quiet Box Office Weekend

By Ben Miller

With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever inching closer to release, studios aren't about to release anything big that the Marvel behemoth could engulf.  With only two new releases for the Halloween weekend and two additional wide expansions, Black Adam and Ticket to Paradise both repeated their top spots from last week's chart.

Weekend Box Office (actuals)
October 28th-30th
🔺 = new or expanding /  ★ = Recommended
links if we've written about it
WIDE (OVER 800 SCREENS) LIMITED / PLATFORM
TICKET TO PARADISE TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

10 🔺 ★ TÁR $1 (cum. $2.5) 10 ALL THAT BREATHES $7k (cum. $18k) 2 screens
11 🔺 ★ CALL JANE $243 *NEW* 11 BOBLO BOATS: A DETROIT FERRY TALE $5k (cum. $84k) 1 screen
12  THE BAD GUYS $222k (cum. $96.9) 12 🔺  THE RUNNER (1984, re-release) $4k *new* 1 SCREEN

The only new releases were Lionsgate's exorcism thriller Prey for the Devil, which only managed third place, and Phyllis Nagy's abortion drama Call Jane, which made less than $250k.  Three other horror films landed in the top 10.  Smile is turning into one of the biggest box office success of the year with a $92 million haul domestic and close to $200 million internationally on just a $17 million budget.

Oscar hopefuls Till and TÁR expanded wide to decent numbers, while gore-fest Terrifer 2 continues its very profitable box office against its teeny-tiny budget.  Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin only added 54 new theaters but still earned nearly $10k per screen.  That average was second for the week behind James Grey's Armageddon Time, which managed $12k on just six screens (the latter expands wide next week). Despite Triangle of Sadness nearly doubling its screen count it was off 3% from last week. Blame the very crowded market (suddenly) for awards hopefuls aimed at adult audiences.

What did you watch this weekend? It was a weekend of comfort watching with the enjoyable double-feature of Ticket to Paradise and Confess, Fletch.  I also knocked out an Oscar blindspot with the Michael Caine/Brendan Fraser 2002 drama The Quiet American.

I caught up with "Downton Abbey: A New Era" and "Barbarian," both of which I greatly enjoyed. "Downton" was a tad too long and lacked any drama, but it was such a satisfying view that I didn't mind too much. "Barbarian" was a lot of fun. Twisty and inventive. If horror movies are to be judged by how many times a viewer will call a character "stupid," then "Barbarian" is a hands-down classic.

I went to the Fathom events double feature of Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Phantom of the Opera (1943). Creature holds up very well - lots of Jaws in it, underwater photography is incredible. Phantom was a bizarre adaptation, but its technicolor opulence was gorgeous on the big screen.

This next week is busy: Triangle of Sadness, Armageddon Time, and Decision to Leave are all expanding. Would also love to rewatch Tar, but it's losing screens fast. The pressure of Black Panther likely obliterating all of these screens in a week is quite irritating. Expanding half the fall awards hopefuls at the exact same time just in time for marvel to take every screen anyway makes little sense, especially after how slow the last 3 months have been.

I haven’t seen The Quiet American for a long time, but I remember it as a really good movie directed by Philip Noyce, based on the novel by writer/ spy/ movie critic Graham Greene.

Michael Caine got a best actor nomination for it, and I remember thinking Brendan Fraser deserved a supporting nomination. It’s a good movie to see if you are most familiar with Fraser from George or The Mummy.

I saw Till and quite frankly I was underwhelmed. Deadwyler is good. But the whole thing felt like an afterschool special
. It saddens me to write these words because I was so looking forward to this film. There are undeniably powerful moments - how could there not be? - but what a letdown.

I saw “Call Jane” which is surprisingly upbeat. Sigourney Weaver says its accurate description is “a movie about health care and access”.

The phrase I’d pick for Sigourney Weaver is “taken for granted”. I’ve laughed as she’s gone for the jugular in comedies; sat on the edge of my seat, rooting for her in action movies; and her dramatic movies have made me look at things in a new light.

Sigourney Weaver has 4 very different movies out this year, showcasing her easy virtuosity. She should be in the awards conversation.

The phrase I’d pick for Elizabeth Banks is “undervalued”. I undervalued her too, until I saw her in the movie “Love and Mercy”. I thought she deserved a supporting nomination for that role.

Banks lets the surface of her emotions play across her physical being, but you can tell those emotions are very deeply rooted. Her style is very unsentimental in its accuracy which focuses attention on the story.

I plan on seeing “Call Jane” again with a few friends.

Love the mention of Sigourney. Her brief part in Jeffrey still makes me almost pee my pants. I, too, watched Downton a New Era, or whatever it was called. I put a lot of stock in it having a gay character and insisting he be a part of all that's happening.

Noticed that Bros fell off the list. How long until they put it on streaming?
