Golden Globe Nominations! "Banshees" and "Abbott" lead
Monday, December 12, 2022 at 10:09AM The nominations for the 80th annual Golden Globes have been announced with Banshees of Inisherin leading the pack (with an incredible 8 nominations - that's a lot for the Globes!) and Abbott Elementary leading for television (5 nominations). The Globes will return to NBC (and Peacock) on January 10th. The HFPA's (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) show was off the air for a year while doing internal reforms included adding 124 members in various capacities (including US journalists working for non-US outlets) and making their voting pool 52% female and 51.5% racially or ethnically diverse, and also becoming a for-profit institution under new ownership. The January event will be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael who has had an amazing 2022, hosting Saturday Night Live in April and winning the Emmy for his brilliant special "Rothaniel" in September. The biggest surprise for us in Drama overall was the poor showing for Women Talking (which received just two nominations). The other surprise was that Elvis -- which very much seemed like a Globe smash -- received only three nods. But it did get this most important one.

Our prediction for Ana De Armas paid off! We imagine this will be a cake walk for Cate Blanchett (who already has 3 Globes: Blue Jasmine, I'm Not There, and Elizabeth) unless they really want to power up their de Armas love for a surprise win, too.

In pre-pandemic times the Globes were much more combative about awards strategists shameless maneuvering around what constituted a "Supporting" role, and the Globes would often revolt and nominate both leads in leads together. While I wouldn't argue that this list is 4/5 leads (I'm not that much of a stickler), it's arguably close with 4 borderline cases plus one purely supporting guy. So hooray for Barry Keoghan finally getting some awards season love... and for an inspired performance, too.

The Globes will surely be dinged publicly by choosing all men this year -- because the discourse is always heated like that. Still, it would behoove the media and the perpetually online to actually look up the facts. The Globes have historically been far more welcoming of female directors over the years than Oscar has so this isn't them being misogynist. It's just a numbers game with votes. Facts: In the Globes 80 year history they've nominated female directors 12 times with 3 of them winning (Streisand, Zhao, Campion) and three have been repeat contenders (Streisand, Campion, Bigelow). In the Academy's longer 94 year history (thus far) they've nominated female directors 8 times with 3 of them winning (Bigelow, Zhao, Campion) and only one woman as a repeat player (Campion). What's more the Globes have nominated 2 Black female directors to date (Regina King, Ava DuVernay) while no Black female directors have yet been Oscar-nominated.
There's a lot of valid reasons to complain about the Globes but this isn't one of them.

Here we see what we were talking about in supporting actor film, again. Last season at the Globes they put Hannah Einbinder where she belonged as a leading lady in a Comedy series for season 1 of Hacks. This year, given that they're trying to win back favor from Hollywood, they're just following the decrees of shameless awards strategists and allowing leads to compete in supporting if they wish where it's easier to snag a nomination. This is not a Globes only problem of course but Globes were basically the last organization to regularly revolt against Category Fraud. In some ways you can't blame the industry organizations (it's all politics and survival and networking) but it continues to be shameful that critics -- who are not paid to be publicists but to actually comment, review, and judge the industry and the arts! -- go along with it so happily.

I would not be surprised at all if Angela Bassett wins Supporting Actress. She's due + she's well-liked in Hollywood.
Bravo to the Globes for finally splitting the TV supporting categories apart a little. I appreciated the strange novelty of winning the old award, but this is still a smart change. Now SAG just needs to admit that supporting roles exist on television and shouldn't be judged against leads!
Happy for TAR + Blanchett, EEAAO + Yeoh + Curtis, Manville, Triangle of Sadness + Dolly de Leon, Linney + Garner, Jonathan Pryce, Claire Danes and The White Lotus crew (especially Aubrey Plaza). Lots of great first-time and returning nominees, many performers I really like in things I haven't seen yet.
That's a very peculiar year. It looks like blockbusters vs auteur festival movies. I can't find the middleway movie à la Michael Clayton
Supporting Actress is crazy this year. There are about 12 viable contenders. It's the new Best Actress.
I am glad to see Farrell seems to be steamrolling to the Oscar. Earlier this year it seemed Brendan Fraser was getting a lot of "overdue for recognition" press. But as much as I like Fraser, Farrell is far more overdue.

I'm so happy Lesley Manville made it in for Mrs. Harris. The trailer made it clear that it was clearly a globe film, but she's so charming and it's great to see her get recognition. Especially for one of the few adult films this year that made money.
I'm also happy that Emma Thompson is here. This was an obvious nomination, but I'd love to really see her out on the campaign trail for this - it's a special performance, and should earn her another Best Actress nomination, even in a competitive year like this one!
The biggest omission in the Comedy category is Keke Palmer for Actress. I do wonder if the supporting/lead issue hampered her, as she gave the type of performance that would have been great for the globes to honor.
It will be interesting to see if the SAGs shift attention back to Women Talking. It seems like a big contender, but I could also see it getting lost a bit when it comes to acting and craft categories. It could be an old fashioned director only nomination.
I'm a bit shocked Debicki went supporting. She was a co-lead (more than even Corrin) this season, and I can't imagine she'll be anything but a supporting actress/glorified guest actress next season.
I'm also very happy to see Angela Bassett here in a stacked category. I think she gives a great performance that plays to her Grande Dame strengths, even if Coogler's editing shifts away from her too frequently. I think it will be easy for her to be overlooked as the season continues, so it will be interesting to see if she gets a hard push with SAG. She has a narrative and I hope Disney maximizes it. Her biggest hurdle is that her film isn't a BP player, which would really benefit her.
Generally pretty happy with these, and not surprised Women Talking underperformed. In future years, though, De Armas over Deadwyler will be a go-to example of what's wrong with the Globes, but I'll still take another televised awards show.
I would have liked to have seen Saoirse Ronan nominated for Lead Actress in a comedy/musical film, for See How They Run.
It was such a little picture, but Saoirse was so perfect in it. Everyone who saw it immediately wanted her to do a sequel with the character and was delighted by her light hand, timing, and charm in a comedic role.
I concur with DK (I wish we could directly reply to people's comments on here one day) about the GGs splitting up the supporting actors into Limited series categories. I'm guessing Wednesday and The Bear win the big ones. Hopefully Jennifer Coolidge will go up to Lead Actress for the Emmys.

I really hate the way the Globes do supporting tv categories, they're so blatant about disregarding character actors.
I posted weeks ago that Deadwyler wasn't a sure thing, and so many posters got upset. Till and Women Talking have the same issue - they both feel too serious, too much like homework. All of the most talked about movies of the year have nostalgic glow or humor or spectacle or some combination of all three. People want to use entertainment to escape reality this year.
The worst of these nominees is Adam Driver for White Noise. I saw that movie yesterday and he was completely miscast - a surprisingly bad performance from someone who is usually excellent.

I am eager to see Swank's new show as I think despite the 2 Oscars,let's not get into the endless debate about being deserving,she can be underrated,she was excellent in Trust a few years ago,The Homesman I hoped would bring her a 3rd nomination in 2014,so she has our fans just not many here..
The thing about Swank is that she seems an extraordinarily nice and humble person—I think both of her wins hold up better than others in that category. She’s not my favorite actress but nobody said she had to be. From her teens she's been a total natural onscreen and I always like to see her doing well.
The supporting TV categories might as well have six nominees since there's still so much competition, especially in the comedy + drama mix. Globes fav Patricia Arquette missing out for Severance is kind of shocking.
These are interesting. I'm most happy for Jamie Lee Curtis bc if she has any shot at an Oscar nod, she really needed this.
Love that Dolly de Leon nomination. Well-deserved. In my book she gave the best performance by an actress in a supporting role. It's a shame that she gets overlooked just because she is an unknown.

I’m most surprised by Tom Cruise’s omission in Best Actor since he seems to be in most people’s Oscar predictions, and the Golden Globe nomination felt even more assured. Maybe Top Gun won’t be as strong outside of the tech categories as some have been expecting?

The Cruise "snub" may be complicated...he returned his old Globes to the HFPA amid the miasma of controversy that got the show canceled last year.
Whereas Fraser, Johansson and others identified specific harms they experienced in HFPA circles, it was unclear what motivated Cruise—Mr. Scientology, lol—to pile on. I found some of the complaints against the organization to be concrete and damning, while others were diffuse and hard to follow—such as the suggestion that HFPA operated in the image of Harvey Weinstein.
I never completely understood which things were addressable via personnel changes (and were, I believe) and which were sufficiently “systemic” to disgrace the whole outfit for a year. Anyway, if Cruise gave a critical tour de force performance, I’m sure he’d be nominated, but they might not be feeling charitable toward his acting work in a Top Gun sequel.
I'm really rooting for the Globes and overall they made some decent picks. So thrilled to see TÁR in the Best Picture lineup. Only real disappointment is no female directors when they had at least three solid options. The Supporting Actress race is going to be fascinating - both in terms of who will be the final five and the eventual Oscar winner. It could go SO many ways. I just hope all the EVERYTHING momentum and this Globe nod push Jamie Lee to a long deserved Oscar nomination. I still think the film is somewhat overrated but if it gets JLC that Oscar nod I'll be happy.

So happy for JLC. I never say this but even though there are 5 "better" Supporting Actress performances this year she'd be #1 on my ballot. I just feel the industry owes her this and you know she'll give an incredible speech.
Thrilled for de Armas because along with Blanchett she gives the performance of the year. I literally could not take my eyes off of her in Blonde.
Sad for Deadwyler who is wonderful in a mediocre film. I still think she gets the Oscar nod but her chances of winning have all but disappeared.
Haven't seen it (and don't want it), but if it's Category Fraud, voters need to make sure not to vote for Carey Mulligan as a Supporting Actress if she's listed first in the credits. How insulting to figure that 'Cate Blanchett will probably win, so I'll just win in the Supporting Category...'
Yay! We're moving into the best part of the year for films and TV, Globes style. Does anyone know who is going to host? I don't have much to say, just wanted to salute the excitement and say that I'm sort of glad Jennifer Coolidge won't be on White Lotus if it gets a 3rd season, and I hope Aubrey Plaza win Best Supporting Actress. That is all.

How has Matilda the Musical been a complete no show in regards to musical/comedy anything? It's not an issue of not screening, since it premiered in London. Is it running as a TV film or something?
