Emmy Predictions: Comedy Categories

By Abe Friedtanzer

Anthony Carrigan and Michael Irby in Barry

Whereas the drama series race can only bring back three of last year’s nominees, six of the comedy honorees are eligible again this year (Hacks and Curb Your Enthusiasm are the two that aren’t). It’s also the final season of heavyweights like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and Ted Lasso  along with two other past nominees, Atlanta and Dead to Me. There’s a slate of new shows in contention, like The Bear, Wednesday, Shrinking, and Poker Face, and it’s important not to forget the show that’s on the rise and likely to be the one to beat this year: Abbott Elementary.

The true challenge of predicting these races is the number of nominees in each based on the number of submissions on the ballot, especially in comparison to the drama categories. Both supporting races only have seven nominees, not eight. Lead actor and actress have five, not six. And the directing and writing categories each have six, but one of the directing nominees has to be a multi-camera show (which has resulted in surprising nominees like B Positive and especially The Ms. Pat Show, which is eligible again this year). There are going to be many deserving shows and performers snubbed as a result, and it’s almost impossible to choose what will get left off and what will make the cut. But let’s try…

HBO and HBOMax or Max – whatever you want to call them – led the nominations in a landslide with The Last of Us, Somebody Somewhere, Succession, and The White Lotus all scoring in a big way. HBO’s nomination tally was literally more than double any of its competitors.

SAG Acceptance Speeches, Ranked

by Nathaniel R

SAG Awards are often a good swift night. There's no dawdling around with filler, there's not much in the way of montages, but there are clips, acceptance speeches, and a parade of celebrities. In short, we're into it. The most sublime inspired combo in terms of presenter pairings was the evil twinnage of Jenna Ortega and Aubrey Plaza. (Whoever thought of that deserves a 20% raise.)  But what SAG is all about is the acceptance speeches.

They come one after the other, a veritable parade of gushing. This ranking was done on the fly from memory so... I do not stand by it should you want to fight in the comments. Nevertheless why not share the acceptance speeches? (the ones we could embed at least). Let's look at the speeches  from least best to best best...

Golden Globe Nominations! "Banshees" and "Abbott" lead

The nominations for the 80th annual Golden Globes have been announced with Banshees of Inisherin leading the pack (with an incredible 8 nominations - that's a lot for the Globes!) and Abbott Elementary leading for television (5 nominations). The Globes will return to NBC (and Peacock) on January 10th. The HFPA's (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) show was off the air for a year while doing internal reforms included adding 124 members in various capacities (including US journalists working for non-US outlets) and making their voting pool 52% female and 51.5% racially or ethnically diverse, and also becoming a for-profit institution under new ownership. The January event will be hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael who has had an amazing 2022, hosting Saturday Night Live in April and winning the Emmy for his brilliant special "Rothaniel" in September. Full list of nominations (comments in progress - refresh your screen periodically) after the jump...

Emmy Category Analysis: Outstanding Comedy Series

By: Christopher James

Eight comedy series compete for the prize of Outstanding Comedy Series.

There’s something for everyone in this season’s Comedy Series race. We once again have a major network TV sitcom fighting against a gaggle of streamers and premium cable offerings. A network sitcom hasn’t won this prize since Modern Family won it for five consecutive years from 2010-2014. Could Abbott Elementary break the drought? Meanwhile, a couple of former winners are looking to defend or reclaim their titles...
