by Nathaniel R

FIRE ISLAND © Searchlight wins the Dorian

GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ+ Entertainment critics have been busy of late, launching the theater wing of their Dorian Awards, and this week announcing their annual TV Dorian Award winners (which multiple members of The Film Experience vote on). HBO and HBOMax or Max – whatever you want to call them – led the nominations in a landslide with The Last of Us, Somebody Somewhere, Succession, and The White Lotus all scoring in a big way. HBO led the nominations with three shows, two comedies (Somebody Somewhere and Hacks) and one drama (Euphoria)...

by Nathaniel R

Quinta Brunson in "Abbott Elementary" © ABC

The Television Critics Association have announced their nominees for the past year of television, aiming straight towards being "influencers" since they announced the day Emmy voting began (yesterday). ABC's wonderful hit sitcom Abbott Elementary led the nominations with five while Better Call Saul, Yellowjackets and Severance were not far behind with 4 citations each.

Generally speaking this organization continues to have good taste though we have two gripes with them that we'll share after the jump. Here's what they loved this year in their 11 categories...

TV Review: Somebody Somewhere (HBO)

Comedian Bridget Everett takes us to her Kansas roots in HBO's "Somebody Somewhere."by Christopher James

Bridget Everett is a one of a kind performer. The comedian and cabaret star first gained notoriety on Inside Amy Schumer. Her routine is brazen not just because of the sexually forward conduct, but moreso because of the sheer force of her confidence.

There’s a cognitive dissonance between Everett’s on-screen persona and her starring role as Sam in Somebody Somewhere. So many of the details about Sam’s life mirror that of Everett’s own life. She’s from a farming family in Kansas and possesses an incredible voice. The main difference - there’s something sullen, almost introverted, about Sam. This bravado that has marked Everett’s whole career is purposefully gone. It’s a bold move that sets the stage for a really special performance...
