Emmy Category Analysis: Outstanding Comedy Series

By: Christopher James

Eight comedy series compete for the prize of Outstanding Comedy Series.

There’s something for everyone in this season’s Comedy Series race. We once again have a major network TV sitcom fighting against a gaggle of streamers and premium cable offerings. A network sitcom hasn’t won this prize since Modern Family won it for five consecutive years from 2010-2014. Could Abbott Elementary break the drought? Meanwhile, a couple of former winners are looking to defend or reclaim their titles...

Emmy Category Analysis: Contemporary Costumes

by Cláudio Alves

Unlike at the Oscars, contemporary costume design is regularly recognized by the Emmys. That's what happens when you have over one hundred categories, including separate prizes for costumes, depending on the type of narrative. This specific award has only existed since 2015, and so far, no show has won it twice, making for a nice reprieve from the TV Academy's usual allergy to spreading the wealth. Indeed, none of this year's nominees is a previous victor, though half of them have competed before.

Usually, new programs have an advantage but never discount the power of a sweep – Schitt's Creek won on its second try as part of its final season's Emmy dominance. In other words, as with other categories, The White Lotus is well positioned to take home the gold…

2022 Emmys: Comedy Supporting Actress

By: Christopher James

Hannah Waddingham hopes to win a second consecutive Emmy for her work in "Ted Lasso."What happens when winners collide? The Comedy Supporting Actress race is loaded with three past winners this year. Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham looks to repeat last year’s win for season two of the hit Apple TV+ program. Meanwhile, both Alex Borstein (Marvelous Mrs Maisel) and Kate McKinnon (SNL) could add a third Emmy trophy to their mantle. McKinnon took home the prize in both 2016 and 2017, with Borstein following in 2018 and 2019.

As powerful as these three are, it would be unwise to count out the newcomers. Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph contend for the first season of Abbott Elementary, while Sarah Niles enters the race for her first appearance on Ted Lasso. Both Hannah Einbender and Juno Temple also earned their second consecutive nomination for their roles in Hacks and Ted Lasso, respectively. Who will take home the gold? Let’s break down the race...

Final Emmy Predictions: Comedy Series and Acting Categories

By: Abe Friedtanzer, Chris James, Cláudio Alves, Nathaniel Rogers

Can "Ted Lasso" continue its winning streak at the Emmys? Will it also dominate the Supporting Actor category again with four nominees?

The Emmys tendency to nominate old favorites may come back to bite them. As noted previously, 14 previous nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series are vying for slots again this year. With only eight slots, it is impossible for them all to make it. Complicating matters more are buzzy new series, such as Peacemaker, Julia, Abbott Elementary, Ghosts, Only Murders in the Building, I Love That For You and Our Flag Means Death, among others. It doesn’t get any easier when moving down to the acting categories, particularly the stacked fields for Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. Lots of Lone Votes of Faith among Team Experience. Tomorrow we will round out our Emmy predictions with the Limited Series categories. Nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards will be announced at 8:30am on Tuesday, July 12th by Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove.

Find out who Team Experience predicts will be nominated for the Comedy categories after the jump...
