Final Emmy Predictions and Creative Arts Emmy Winners

By: Christopher James

For those who watched the Golden Globes, the TV landscape seemed to only have three shows. Succession took home all drama specific prizes. The Bear pulled off a similar hat trick on the comedy side. Finally, Beef swept the Limited Series categories. With the delayed Emmys finally happening, one may think they’ll see the same people and the same speeches repeat one week later.

However, keep in mind the Emmys voting period was from August 17 to 28, meaning the winners were technically chosen five months ago. Like a time capsule, all will be revealed on Monday, Jan 15th. We got our first clue as to how the Television Academy voted this past week at the Creative Arts Ceremony.

See how these categories could clue us into the Emmy winners, who we are predicting for the Primetime Emmy Awards and a full list of Creative Arts Winners after the jump.

Emmy Analysis: Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

By Abe Friedtanzer

Lukita Maxwell and Jason Segel in "Shrinking," now streaming on Apple TV+.

Isn’t this supposed to be a comedy category? Yes, two of the shows with a questionable genre distinction -- Barry and The Bear – are represented here, but all five men chose relatively serious fare as their episode submissions. Before we dig in, let’s start with a mention of the three eligible nominees from last year who didn’t make the cut this time around. Donald Glover, a past winner of this category, had his last shot for Atlanta, and Steve Martin missed out on a repeat bid for season two of Only Murders in the Building. Most lamentably, Nicholas Hoult was somehow not selected for The Great. How that’s possible is beyond me, but fortunately the five men who did make the cut are all worthwhile…

Emmy Analysis: Comedy Supporting Categories

By Abe Friedtanzer

Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri in FX's The Bear

With only fourteen nominees, the comedy supporting categories still have nearly double the shows represented by the drama supporting categories’ sixteen recognized individuals. Both supporting actor and supporting actress contain two sets of double nominees, but it’s hardly the overwhelming domination that exists on the drama side. There are also five past winners and a handful of fresh faces that make these two races well worth watching...

Emmy Nominations - Who's Up and Who's Down?

By Christopher James

For the first time, all members of the Roy family earned Emmy nominations, including eldest brother Connor, played by Alan Ruck.

When the Emmys fall for a show, they fall hard. Despite having over 100 categories, the Television Academy nominates less and less series each year. As Abe covered Thursday night and Team groused about a bit in their reactions, four shows racked up over 20 nominations each this year (Succession, The Last of Us, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus), up from three last year. Three of those four shows won Series prizes last year. The fourth (The Last of Us) competes this year for its first season. A year over year increase is a strong sign that momentum is on a show’s side. You can defeat a previous winner or stage a coup if you can leverage a large nomination haul to gain a foothold and mount an aggressive campaign. But campaigning will be mostly out the window this year given the strikes

So what does the Emmy race look like now that nominations are out? Did any challengers emerge to overthrow incumbents Succession and Ted Lasso?

Team Experience Reacts to the 2023 Emmy Nominations

by Christopher James

The Team was particularly excited for the four nominations for Jury Duty.

No one loves awards shows more than The Film Experience team. Loving an award show doesn’t mean nomination morning is happy. You take the lumps of coal with the bright, shiny surprises. There was plenty to like this year at the Emmys, and about as much to complain about as well. After all, there are more than 100 categories, even if most of them went to Succession.
