Final Emmy Predictions and Creative Arts Emmy Winners

By: Christopher James

For those who watched the Golden Globes, the TV landscape seemed to only have three shows. Succession took home all drama specific prizes. The Bear pulled off a similar hat trick on the comedy side. Finally, Beef swept the Limited Series categories. With the delayed Emmys finally happening, one may think they’ll see the same people and the same speeches repeat one week later.

However, keep in mind the Emmys voting period was from August 17 to 28, meaning the winners were technically chosen five months ago. Like a time capsule, all will be revealed on Monday, Jan 15th. We got our first clue as to how the Television Academy voted this past week at the Creative Arts Ceremony.

See how these categories could clue us into the Emmy winners, who we are predicting for the Primetime Emmy Awards and a full list of Creative Arts Winners after the jump.

Sam Richardson won the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for Ted Lasso. Is this a sign the Emmys still love the show?Comedy Predictions

There’s poised to be some new blood in the Comedy category. Both Wednesday and The Bear each earned four wins at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony. For Wednesday, it makes sense. It’s a craft focused fantasy show and these are the categories where it was meant to shine. In particular, the casting win for The Bear makes it likely it can win some of the acting categories, if not the top prize as well.

Don’t count out Ted Lasso just yet though. Even with bad reviews for the final season, the Emmys still gave the series 21 nominations. It also won two Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Guest Actor for Sam Richardson. This was a category where I expected The Bear to win, either for Oliver Platt or Jon Bernthal. It’s not often the Emmys go for a dramatic winner in the lead prize, which is why I’m playing it safe and picking Ted Lasso for the top prize. However, The Bear is going to give it a run for its money.

Comedy Series - Ted Lasso

Comedy Actress - Quinta Brunson - Abbott Elementary

Comedy Actor - Jeremy Allen White - The Bear

Comedy Supporting Actress - Ayo Edebiri - The Bear

Comedy Supporting Actor - Brett Goldstein - Ted Lasso

Comedy Directing - The Bear - Review

Comedy Writing - Ted Lasso - So Long, Farewell

The "Long, Long Time" episode of The Last of Us won Nick Offerman (left) an Emmy. Could it be a dark horse winner in directing?

Drama Predictions

Strangely enough, the most telling predictor comes way far down the ballot in the Nonfiction Or Reality Series category. Succession: Controlling The Narrative beat out other behind the scenes content from its competitors - The White Lotus, The Last of Us and The House of the Dragon.

Still, there are some signs that Succession may not take everything. It lost all 13 of its nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys. In the past, it has taken home somewhere between one and three wins at the Creative Arts ceremony. The Last of Us utterly dominated on the drama side, winning eight awards including both Guest Acting categories, for Nick Offerman and Storm Reid. Meanwhile, The White Lotus squeaked out four wins, including the casting award that Succession has won in the past. Succession still feels poised for a Drama Series win, but this makes me think it won’t be a clean sweep like some are expecting.

Drama Series - Succession

Drama Actress - Sarah Snook - Succession

Drama Actor - Pedro Pascal - The Last of Us

Drama Supporting Actress - Jennifer Coolidge - The White Lotus

Drama Supporting Actor - Matthew MacFadyen - Succession

Drama Director - The Last of Us - Long, Long Time

Drama Writing - Succession - Connor’s Wedding

Weird Al Yankovic won Best TV Movie for "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story." Could it pick up any other awards during the Primetime Emmys show?

Limited Series Predictions

The war between Beef and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story may have already reached a foregone conclusion. Both shows led with 13 nominations. Yet, Beef won four key prizes at the Creative Arts Emmys, while Dahmer lost all of its nominations. This puts Beef squarely in the lead to win the top prize. The new question to ask is “how many prizes can the show win?”

Are there any wild cards that stood out from the Creative Arts Emmys? Look out for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. The TV Movie category was more competitive than usual this year, and Weird beat out stiff competition like Fire Island and Prey. Could it win Writing or surprise in Best Actor?

Limited Series - Beef

Movie/Limited Actress - Ali Wong - Beef

Movie/Limited Actor - Evan Peters - Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Movie/Limited Supporting Actress - Nicey Nash-Betts - Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Movie/Limited Supporting Actor - Paul Walter Hauser - Black Bird

Movie/Limited Director - Beef - Figures of Light

Movie/Limited Writing - Beef - The Birds Don't Sing, They Screech in Pain

Can RuPaul's Drag Race win its fifth prize for Outstanding Reality Competition Program?

Other Category Predictions

RuPaul once again won Outstanding Reality or Competition Program host and no other Competition show won any of the other categories. This paves the way for it to win its fifth award.

Meanwhile, we’re going to get some shake up as seven time Variety Talk Series winner Last Week Tonight with John Oliver got moved to Scripted Variety Series to go up against juggernaut Saturday Night Live. With two Creative Arts wins, I’m predicting Saturday Night Live to retain its crown, though Oliver could still end up winning in this different category. Meanwhile, it’s anyone’s game in the Variety Talk Series category. My eye is on whether Jon Stewart can regain his crown in this category, or if his Daily Show replacement, Trevor Noah, can win for his final season on the show. When in doubt, go with someone having their last season.

Finally, both live concert extravaganzas have won two Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys - Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium and The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna. They seem poised to defeat their award show competition. After last year’s superbowl win, I feel like the Emmys will continue the trend.

Competition Program - RuPaul’s Drag Race

Variety Talk Series - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

Scripted Variety Series - Saturday Night Live

Variety Special (Live) - The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna

Writing For A Variety Series - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Storm Reid also won a Guest Acting Emmy for her work on The Last of Us.

Thoughts:

-Anybody but Kieran for Drama Actor please! It’s bad acting.
-So people are really predicting that Ayo Edibiri will win a supporting comedy award for a leading drama character…so bizarre.
-Man if Claire Danes doesn’t win for the best performance of the year by any actor, it will be a real shame.
-I’m conflicted about Succession winning a third series award. I mean, Sopranos only won twice. It still irks me that Squid Game didn’t win Series when it was really the show of the year. Need to let go, I know. But I can’t deny that week-to-week those final Succession episodes were so damn good.

I actually think the fact that the winners were chosen 5 months ago strengthens the case for SUCCESSION, BEEF and BEAR to keep sweeping. I feel like they all had even bigger heat back then than they do now, but we'll see.

Praying that the Beef love is so strong that Steven Yeun edges out Evan Peters.

I think one of the worst changes the Emmy’s have made is not requiring voters to certify that they’ve watched submitted episodes. It reduced sweeps and made for fun surprises.

I do think these picks feel very now. I think in lead actress comedy, Rachel Brosnahan or Christina Applegate with the slight edge to Beosnahan.

I don’t think Ayo will win here. I think Borstein, Ralph, or Waddingham will repeat. I’d give the edge to Waddingham, but Borstein’s episode is one for the ages. I also think James Marsden will win. His show was peaking at the right moment during voting and over performed in nominations, because of his charisma.

I’m also not sure who will win - maybe Keri Russell - but I don’t think Snook is assured her win.

Oh yes, forgot to add that I'm totally rooting for James Marsden too. Well, Jury Duty in general, but I think he's their best chance at a win for sure.
