Best Supporting Actor - Strongest Lineup in Years?

by Nathaniel R

It's that time when you should start voting on the chart polls of "who SHOULD win?" We all know Kieran Culkin has the "supporting" Oscar locked up for his moody insightfulness and purposefully too-much lead performance in A Real Pain. But can we pause for a moment to appreciate that, Category Fraud aside, this is the best Best Supporting Actor lineup we've had in ages. There's not a bad or solid-but-unexciting performance in the bunch, just excellence across the board. Because I was so stunned at the quality of the shortlist, I had to look back through Oscar history to find its equivalent  - a year wherein there's not a single performance nominated that would look bad as a winner. I think you have to go back thirty years to either 1995 or 1993 to find a lineup as consistently strong. This message has been brought to you by a post-nomination viewing of The Apprentice a film I'd been avoiding for trauma reasons around the death of democracy. Strong is just excellent in the awards magnet role of Roy Cohn, a role that's already won Al Pacino an Emmy and Nathan Lane a Tony (both via Angels in America). Strong is so good that it's legitimately surprising that he's not even third best in the category...

Final Emmy Predictions and Creative Arts Emmy Winners

By: Christopher James

For those who watched the Golden Globes, the TV landscape seemed to only have three shows. Succession took home all drama specific prizes. The Bear pulled off a similar hat trick on the comedy side. Finally, Beef swept the Limited Series categories. With the delayed Emmys finally happening, one may think they’ll see the same people and the same speeches repeat one week later.

However, keep in mind the Emmys voting period was from August 17 to 28, meaning the winners were technically chosen five months ago. Like a time capsule, all will be revealed on Monday, Jan 15th. We got our first clue as to how the Television Academy voted this past week at the Creative Arts Ceremony.

See how these categories could clue us into the Emmy winners, who we are predicting for the Primetime Emmy Awards and a full list of Creative Arts Winners after the jump.

"Barbie" leads the Golden Globe Nominations

by Nathaniel R

After a tumultuous few years for the Golden Globes, will we back on track this year? Or, rather, what kind of track will it be? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is no more, really, at least not in the previous sense. The organization has been restructured and bought up by Penske Media (which also owns the big trade journals like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter) and the voter pool significantly expanded. But the big question is will it matter for viewers and celebrities after the past few years – the Globes were once a habitual must-attend/must-watch tradition but once you stop a tradition cold turkey can it return?

The nominations (the Barbenheimer phenomenon leads in the movie categories with 9 and 8 nods respectively) and more commentary are after the jump…

Emmy Category Analysis: Lead Actor in a Drama Series (2023)

By Christopher James

Jeremy Strong has won Lead Actor in a Drama Series once before, for the second season of Succession in 2020.

Another day, another category that Succession has dominated. Of the six slots in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Succession takes up half the category. However, this isn’t necessarily a huge bonus for the show. The other Drama Series acting categories seem relatively locked up (take the time to prepare speeches, Sarah Snook, Matthew MacFadyen, and Jennifer Coolidge). Yet, the Lead Actor in a Drama Series race feels much more open. Multiple Succession cast members have narratives for a win, while the non-Succession men are putting up a great fight.

Who will prevail in this tight race? Let’s take a look at the episode submissions...

Emmy Analysis: Drama Supporting Categories

By Abe Friedtanzer

Sixteen nominees for supporting actor and supporting actress are drawn from a mere four drama series, and two of them netted just a single mention apiece. That’s fourteen bids for two juggernauts from HBO, The White Lotus and Succession. The former is up one nomination from last year while the latter breaks even in these races, but two of its supporting contenders from last year, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, got promoted to the lead race (and may be able to win there). Despite heavy internal competition, I think last year’s winners have a good shot at repeating, but let’s look closely at all the nominees and the episodes they’ve submitted for consideration…
