27 Films Eligible for Best Animated Feature for the 95th Oscars

by Nathaniel R

APOLLO 10 1/2: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD

Better late the never the Academy has finally released the names of the eligible lists in their three specialty movie categories (Best International Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Animated Feature). We've already discussed the Best International Feature lists which we've known for some time, so let's talk animation.

There will be 5 nominees this year (as per usual since the threshold to make that happen is so low). Read on for the list of eligible titles and where you can watch the films. Half of the films are easily accessible right now...

UPDATED OSCAR PREDICTION CHART

Surprise inclusions: For some time we assumed that A24's Marcel the Shell with Shoes On *might* be eliminated based on its live-action component but the Academy recently declared it eligible so it's on the list.

Notable exclusions: Some international films we thought might try and qualify were Blind Willow Sleeping Woman (Canada), The Deer King (Japan), Forbidden to Dogs and Italians (Italy) which took the jury prize at Annecy, Nahuel and the Magic Book (Chile), and finally the trio of No Dogs or Italians Allowed (Italy), My Neighbors Neighbors (France) and My Love Affair with Marriage (Luxembourg) which were all nominated in this category at the European Film Awards. One British film that apparently wasn't submitted was Amazing Maurice which opened in theaters back in February.

DC League of Super Pets is now available on HBO and HBOMAX.

I've only seen "The Bad Guys" which was an Airplane movie. It was fun. I think I saw "Minions" but it was as interchangeable as all the other sequels to "Despicable Me".

So, this is Marcel vs Guillermo del Toro's Pinochio

Drifting Home is available on Netflix (and it is very good).

Interesting that both of the frontrunners (Pinocchio and Marcel) make it so we’re all but guaranteed to have the first stop-motion winner in this category since 2005, which would also make it the first non-CG winner since then. How has there still only been one traditionally animated winner?

Pulling hard for my guy Marcel even though I realize he's a huge underdog!

I believe "Forbidden to Dogs and Italians (Italy)" and "No Dogs or Italians Allowed (Italy)" are one and the same film.

Interesting that many Animated International Submission like Aurora's Sunrise and TeraStorm are missing from the shortlist.
