Pleasure To Meet You

by Jason Adams

I hope you'll forgive me since I'm the member of Team TFE that pays the scantest attention possible to Awards Season, but when I watched half of the Independent Spirits this past weekend I was extremely confused to see that Ninja Thyberg's porn industry drama Pleasure had been nominated for a few awards, and it threw me down a rabbit hole of confusion with regards to that movie's release. I saw it at Sundance last year (that is in 2021) and I was blown away by it, and I had been waiting, waiting, waiting, for news of a release...

until the film had eventually slipped my mind altogether (since there have been a lot of things happening in the world, and all). So when it popped up at the Spirits I thought I must have missed a small release!

But no! I had not! Because Neon has just dropped the poster and the first trailer today, and I've got it for you below. (And this is the red-band one because this movie demands red-band - click here if you'd rather watch the green-band one.) Pleasure stars Sofia Kappel (giving it all and then ten more alls for emphasis) as Bella Cherry, a new porn girl in town (that would be Los Angeles, natch), and we follow her brief Star Is Born trajectory through the modern sex industry. Not a movie for everyone, but a great and unforgettable movie nonetheless, I very much recommend when it hits theaters on May 13th.

This movie is pretty sleazy in lots of ways, both intentional and unintentional. I mean, what did the heroine expect she'd have to do to get to the top of the porn industry? Why is she so surprised by the cold, hard reality of it? Overall, it's as much a part of the problem as it is an expose of it. And it isn't one hundredth as good as Sean Baker's Starlet (2012). which covers much the same ground.

One of my favourite movies of 2021 is about to become one of my favourite movies of 2022.

Yeah, I want to see this. Yes, I watch porn and not all porn films lack substance. Some of them do put it a bit of a story and some of the actors do act.
