I'll Link To That

Today's must read
IndieWire's Eric Kohn has an interesting piece on Jim Carrey's retirement and why A list actors get bored and why they don't pursue more challenging opportunities. Some good theories here even if some of the information shared about how name actors (and their agents) invest time in finding fresh auteurs who could improve their filmographies.

Secret Lynch film, Nicolas Cage reflections, Nimona resurrected, Joel Grey celebration, Mother's Instinct pre-production, and more after the jump...

AV Club a new David Lynch mystery film is going to Cannes and supposedly Laura Dern is in it. The latter bit isn't surprising if there's a Lynch film happening.

IndieWire very good news for fans of webcomic Nimona (*raises hand*), Disney shelved the animated adaptation when it was well into production but now Netflix and Annapurna will complete the film

The Times interviews Paul Verhoeven about Benedetta and his next film Young Sinner. The quote that's been going around is him talking about the fact that there is not enough sex in movies anymore. Even in Bond fims of all things. Agreed 1000%
Backstage Psychological drama Mothers Instinct starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain was announced last year but since there hadn't been any movement we assumed it was off. Not so. Production starts this summer so expect it in 2023

Nicolas Cage's best performances:

1 - Wild at Heart
2 - Moonstruck
3 - Leaving Las Vegas
4 - Pig
5 - Bringing Out the Dead
6 - Raising Arizona
7 - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call Las Vegas
8 - Joe
9 - Adaptation
10 - Matchstick Men

He is one the best actors since the 80's, and also one of the worst, just like Kevin Spacey. There are only to ways: great or terrible.

For me so far...

1. Wild at Heart
2. Matchstick Men
3. Adaptation
4. Raising Arizona
5. Joe
6. Bringing Out the Dead
7. Rumble Fish
8. Leaving Las Vegas
9. Moonstruck
10. Face/Off

I haven't seen his recent work but I do hope to catch up as I do appreciate the fact that even if he's in a bad movie. He'll at least give it his all knowing that it's a job but he's good at what he does.

Sam Elliott apologized. I mean, apologies accepted, but he really said some dumb things just when the tide was turning against the best movie of the race.

I have so much respect for Cameron Diaz's decision to retire.

You can't touch the level of stardom she attained or how thoroughly she earned it by force of charisma and talent. She brought so much joy to the screen, a singular face and comic presence who is utterly iconic to anyone who lived through that time.

The Eric Kohn article is interesting. It was always obvious to me that agents pushed their clients to the lucrative projects, but I'd never seen such explicit confirmation that the big agencies completely side-step small independent productions for their clients.
