Streaming Roulette, May 2022
Okay, time for this month's streaming roulette. You know the rules. We highlight new-to-streaming movies and an occasional TV series by freezing them on the scroll bar at entirely random places and just sharing what pops up. No cheating*!
So when you stopped going to Church is that about the time you stopped seeing your family and your brothers?
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022) on Hulu
A very discomfiting watch just two episodes in, being an Ex-Mormon. Can't imagine how still practicing Mormons are feeling. Always happy to see Andrew Garfield and Gil Birmingham who are paired here as detectives on a double-homicide case that is rapidly growing in danger and disorienting implications...
In these first two episodes it's surprisingly Billy Howle (On Chesil Beach, The Sense of an Ending), in focus above, who has been walking away with the show as the primary suspect who might be telling the awful truth.
-so many crossed over.

Resurrection (1980) on Criterion Channel
This is a must see this month as this Ellen Burstyn drama, nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress) is very hard to get a hold of and rarely screened. Most prints of it are terrible. But Criterion Channel is streaming it, bless them, in good quality condition. When we held the Supporting Actress Smackdown of 1980 right here, Eva LeGalliene emerged as the surprise winner! She was also one of Hollywood's earliest "out" actors.
These cadets will follow you only if they respect you."
Taps (1981) on Paramount+
This military Academy drama used to play on cable all the time in the late 80s. I don't remember if it's any good. Anyone? But look, it's baby Tom Cruise to the left in only his second movie role. He was just 19. Sean Penn is also in it making his film debut at 21 and Giancarlo Esposito, too, at just 23. School dramas are often time capsules for major stars in early roles -- see also School Ties (1992). The movie stars Timothy Hutton, who was hot off his Oscar win for Ordinary People (1980).
Kind of a surprise meeting you here today like this but okay.
Grandma (2015) on Hulu
Still so proud to have been quoted on this poster and wish Lily Tomlin had had a greater awards run for this wonderful late career showcase. Marcia Gay Harden, Sam Elliott, and Judy Greer are also excellent in this comedy which you absolutely should see if you haven't.
- I'd like three orders of garlic chicken.
- and then?
- and then three hours of white rice
- and then?
- and then... oh hey, you guys want soup? three orders of wonton soup
- and then?
Dude Where's My Car (2000) on Amazon Prime
The "and thens..." continue for a long time. Have vague recollections of laughing hard at this purposefully ridiculous comedy and being relieved when the kiss between the leads -- which was widely discussed at the time and played for comedy -- wasn't mean-spirited 'that's gross!' comedy but just more silliness, though I wonder how it's aged? Remember when Ashton Kutcher was a rising actor rather than a spokesperson? This was his breakout rule but his co-star Seann William Scott had already broken out the previous year with American Pie.
One minute I hear you and Nick Nelson are a thing. The next minute you're kissing some girl at Harry's party!
Heartstopper Season 1 on Netflix
This show was such a sweet wonderful watch and over too soon! So much interpersonal D-R-A-M-A but of the teen angst variety. Who was your favourite supporting character? They're all endearing but I actually was surprised to love Imogen (Rhea Norwood), pictured here, who had very little screentime but nailed each of her scenes when I feared she'd be presented as just a villain / obstacle. But then I remembered how generous the memorable webcomic was to all its characters (yes I read it back in the day and the casting was super spot-on visually) and was like "oh, of course!"
[no dialogue]
A River Runs Through It (1992) on Netflix
I remember three things about this movie. 1). The sun-dappled Oscar-winning cinematography and the way it made Brad Pitt even more gorgeous and golden than usual 2) That it was a brotherly rivalry drama co-starring Emily Lloyd who had a very volatile and short run as a must-cast young actress (she was 21 when this movie emerged and didn't appear in another movie for awhile thereafter) her career fell apart due to a combination of mental health problems and bad Hollywood luck. And 3) the comic reveal that two minor characters got terrible sunburns after falling asleep in the nude -- so this must be the final punchline of that scene.
--I've been thinking all evening about the house that we're building. It looks like you're sleepy.
--I'm not sleepy. I'm listening.
Dodes'ka Den (1970) on HBOMax
HBO has added a few Akira Kurosawas this month (they're totally the best mainstream streaming service). This film about a group of slum dwellers in Tokyo was the auteur's first film in color. Though Kurosawa was an international giant, he was not submitted as frequently to the Oscars as he should have been. Only 6 of his 30 films were submitted fore the International Feature category. Here were the results:
- Rashomon (1951) - HONORARY OSCAR WIN
- Dodes'Ka Den (1971) - NOMINEE
- Dersu Uzala (1975) - COMPETITIVE OSCAR WIN (but for the Soviet Union instead of Japan)
- Kagemusha (The Shadow Warrior) (1980) - NOMINEE
- Rhapsody in August (1991) - Failed to secure a nomination
- Madadayo (1993) - Kurosawa's final film. It failed to secure a nomination
Infamously Japan did not submit Kurosawa's epic King Lear adaptation Ran (1985) and the uproar helped the movie land firmly on the Academy's radar securing four nominations (though it deserved more) including Kurosawa in Best Director.
So what (else) is streaming in May?

* People never believe this but it's (mostly) true. The only exceptions are when the image is too fast to look good in still frame (we usually use a gif in those cases) or if it's too transitional (dissolves, fadeouts, etcetera) or an establishing shot of a building or something... the other secret to why the images are often good is that we just dont use that particular film if we land on something that's too dull.

Dude, Where's My Car? is OK although I kind of wish Ashton Kutcher never had a film career as he's just one-note and never does anything that makes me think of Kelso or the stupid shit he did with Punk'ed. If someone like that tried to play a prank on me, I'd do something far worse. Now he can at least do That 90's Show although I don't think it's going to work. I rather not have any kind of nostalgia for the 90s.
I do hope film fans will take this opportunity to screen the 1980 version of Resurrection on the Criterion Channel. Ellen Burstyn and Eva Le Gallienne do extraordinary work. The film was originally pitched as a horror film. Burstyn, having starred in The Exorcist, had little interest.
Screenwriter Lewis John Carlino was hot in Hollywood. He had recently been nominated for an Oscar for I Never Promised You a Rose Garden while another recent script, The Great Santini, has provided Oscar nominated roles for Robert Duvall and Michael OβKeefe. He pitched Ellen Burstyn the faith healer concept. She was smitten, rolled up her sleeves, and went to work.
The resulting film has Burstynβs fingerprints all over it. The protagonist is named Edna Mae. Burstynβs birth name is Edna Rae.
Currently co-president of the Actorβs Studio in New York, Burstyn has long been active in the leadership of the highly regarded acting organization. To cast the low budget Resurrection, she recruited admired actors from the Actorβs Studio to give a depth to many minor roles. That consistent level of extraordinary talent makes Resurrection a powerful ensemble.
This is a film about great acting. From Burstynβs luminous performance as an emotionally scarred woman who finds a second chance after a life changing event to Madeline Sherwood, a skilled stage actress who frequently played leads in Tennessee Williamsβs works, as Rose. In one scene the badly crippled Rose attends Ednaβs healing event. Following the laying on of hands, Rose is able to stand on her own for the first time in years. Sherwood is magnificent as she plays this complex myriad of emotions of joy, relief, wonder and gratitude.
Really almost all performances here are that strong. Back in 1980, I fell in love with this film. I would attend the 10 pm final show on more occasions than I wish to admit. I have always embraced films about healing. For many years, this has served as my personal choice for an example of art that l find personally profound.
As a Japanese Cinema aficionado, I must urge people to go see the ultimate masterpieces of two of the greatest directors of all time:
Tokyo Twilight is Yasujiro Ozu's darkest movie, as heartbreaking as Tokyo Story but without any hints of sweetness. It's a family melodrama full of anger about two sisters left behind when they were kids by their restless mother. It's like The Lost Daughter, from the daughters' point of view.
And there's High and Low, Kurosawa's claustrophobic noir, one of the most visually impressive movies I've ever seen. There are some incredible YouTube video essays about its blocking, for example. And, of course, it's a moral tale about money, greed and honor.
Japan produced some of the best movies of all time during the 50s and the 60s, but Tokyo Twilight and High and Low are probably my favorite ones.
(OMG, Red Beard is there, too. MASTERPIECE)
Nice and amazing post this one is, thanks for sharingβ¦
Tell The Bell
Started Under the Banner of Heaven, but honestly, after the news yesterday, I can't take any more stories of fundamentalism. Also why I gave up on Handmaid's Tale. Just gonna watch The Great Pottery Throw Down or Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories on loop. May start Heartstopper though, cuz you know they're coming for LGBTQ+ rights next.
Do not forget that Grandma gave us the marvelous Julia Garner.
I'm enjoying Under the Banner of Heaven so far. I am always interested in stories based in strict religious communities, I think it is because my family were such vanilla Protestants (I was confirmed and baptized but there wasn't much more to my religious upbringing than that).
Criterion Channel is so great this month. Some of the Linklater offerings, the documentaries in particular, are really difficult to find, and I'm looking forward to the Mother's Day features (have never seen Resurrection, even though I love Burstyn) and Juzo Itami series as well.
Nathaniel, I agree with you that HBOMax is the best streaming service, but Hulu I think is second. They seem to have someone who goes for quality in what they release or re-release. Worst streaming service is Amazon. Most of their films require a fee to see; it seems like Streaming is just a way to get more Amazon memberships.
Loved Grandma. Would bet that the creators of Grace and Frankie (including Lily) tried to give their show the same honesty and happiness that the makers of Grandma did. Such a lovely film, better because of all the truth.
The list of movies shared here is the best in the year 2022 till now. If you are facing any difficulty in making your resume then in my advice you can take the help of the resumes planet. On this website, you will find the services which are best for you and in your favor.
Thanks
