"The White Lotus" and "Severance" top the HCA TV Awards
by Nathaniel R
The Hollywood Critics Association has been making waves in the past couple of years inviting lots of new members (expanding beyond California, albeit with a 25% cap) and getting more press, too. Their TV awards were distributed over two star-studded nights where both celebrities and critics presented.
The most noteworthy thing is that they divvy their awards up much differently than the Emmys, by splitting them in half between "broadcast & cable" and "streaming". They even split hairs further for the top program prizes divvying it up three ways: "broadcast", "cable", and "streaming". In a way, it's a savvy Golden Globe to the Oscars kind of tactic, since they get to honor way more programs and actors by splitting things in half or by thirds. Consider for example that the Hollywood Critics Association did not have Dopesick (streaming) and The White Lotus (cable) in direct competition; they could both win prizes with ease! At the Emmys of course those two shows will go head-to-head. Two of TFE's three California-based contributors were on hand as you can see in the photo after the jump. A complete list of winners follows, too...
The White Lotus and Severance were the biggest winners with five prizes each though Abbot Elementary, Dopesick, and Better Call Saul also cleaned up with four wins each.

I don't think it is necessary to divide up the awards according to which platform they are delivered on. (Among other things, it meant I barely registered any of the winners because the list was so long!) Genre, sure, but not broadcast v cable v streaming.

At first blush, it appears the best of the season was properly recognized here. A closer look, however, reveals some decisions that might raise eyebrows - Selena Gomez besting Jean Smart for Best Actress or a Disney Chip 'n' Dale cartoon winning Best Movie over The Fallout.
I love Jean Smart and I loved S2 of Hacks, but the best performance in a comedy "streaming" wasn't even nominated, so now I'm glad Selena Gomez won.
The Seehorn, Bartlett, Seyfried, Keaton, and Dever wins made my day..
My mental health depends on seeing Jennifer Coolidge accept an Emmy on stage next month
These ceremonies were a lot of fun but they're not so helpful for Emmy predictions. This crowd LOVED Abbott Elementary and Better Call Saul, yet the latter still tied with Succession, which one no other prizes, for the top series award. Abbott didn't have to compete with Ted Lasso or Hacks, but Ted Lasso still took the series award they were both vying for while Hacks won writing and directing (just like at last year's Emmys) while Jean Smart lost best actress to Selena Gomez, who isn't Emmy-nominated. That makes me think Quinta Brunson may just be able to win the Emmy.
Between The White Lotus and Dopesick, however, I just don't know. Both won five prizes - limited series, two acting awards, and writing and directing.
But it's nice to see such fun winners, like This Is Us for Best TV Drama, and the excitement around Yellowjackets picking up a few prizes. I always say - the more categories, the better!
