Finland submits "Girl Picture" (ihana!) and other Oscar news

by Nathaniel R

You all know that we here at TFE are huge fans of Girl Picture and today comes news that Finland has chosen it as their Oscar submission. While we wish its US release had been noisier (it was still playing in NYC last week) we've talked it up to everyone we know and all of you of course. It's one of the seven most recent official submissions to be announced. More after the jump...

🇫🇮 GIRL PICTURE (Alli Haapasalo)
FINLAND (1 nomination and 2 additional finalists from 36 submissions)

A lively coming-of-age drama about three adolescent girls struggling to define their lives and sexuality. Oscar sometimes likes their features more sober and "important" than this, but why shouldn't the drama of contemporary day-to-day life be considered "important"? In short, we're rooting for it! Currently in select theaters in the US.

🇦🇹 CORSAGE (Marie Kreutzer)
AUSTRIA (2 wins, 4 nominations, and 1 additional finalist from 46 submissions)

This fictional biopic about the 19th century Empress of Austria stars Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) and Colin Morgan (Belfast, Merlin). It made quite a splash at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section so it's definitely one to watch in this particular race. Vicky Krieps has already picked up two prizes for her royal performance at film festivals. IFC Films will distribute in the US though they haven't announced dates yet.

🇭🇷 SAFE PLACE (Juraj Lerotic)
CROATIA (no results yet from 31 submissions)

A single day drama about a suicidal man. Juraj Lerotic wrote, directs, and stars in his debut feature. He's previously made a few shorts.

🇬🇹 THE SILENCE OF THE MOLE (Anäis Taracena)
GUATEMALA (1 finalist from 4 submissions)

A documentary about a journalist in the 1970s who infiltrated Guatemala's shady government.

🇮🇩 NGERI-NGERI SEDAP (Bene Dion Rajagukguk)
INDONESIA (submissions)

A comedy about parents pretending to fight so that their children will return from overseas.

🇳🇱 NARCOSIS (Martijn de Jong)
NETHERLANDS (3 wins, 7 nominations, and 3 additional finalists from 55 submissions)

We only know that it's some kind of family mystery. Thekla Reuten (In Bruges, Red Sparrow) and Fedja van Huêt (from the Oscar-winning Character) star. This is a debut film from the director Martijn de Jong, not to be confused with Mijke de Jong (Layla M) who has been submitted twice though one of hers (Bluebird) was disqualified.

🇵🇾  EAMI (Paz Encina)
PARAGUAY (nothing yet from 6 submissions)

A magical film about a little girl who is a bird-god. The film is inspired by the mythologies of the indigenous Ayoreo-Totobiegosode people who live in an area experiencing the fastest deforestation on the planet.

I haven't seen Eami, but I want to see it asap because Encina's Hamaca Paraguaya was astonishing.
