Year in Review: Best Music and Soundscapes

Are all cinephiles "visual" people or are some more sonically attuned? I ask this because in order to draw up my own lists of "bests" in the aural categories, I have to really focus to note the soundscapes. In some cases, as with the sinuous alien creepiness of Nope and the haunted bold swings of TAR, the genius is hard to miss even for those of us who are more visually oriented. If any of you have theories as to how Oscar's sound branch didn't include either in even their finalist lists, I'm all ears... no pun intended.

For the most part it's the images I remember which may explain why I am so allergic to end credit songs over a dark screen being hailed the "Best" of any given season in Original Song. Marry the images and sound and it's far more memorable and valuable to the overall film experience...

Weekend Box Office: A Cold Christmas

Traditionally seen as one of the big box office weekends of the year, the Christmas box office was hampered by the devestating cold weather.  Avatar: The Way of Water cruised to another easy box office championship but the entire weekend only made slightly north of $80 million.

EFA Nominations: 'Close', 'Holy Spider', and 'Triangle of Sadness' rule

The 35th Annual European Film Awards have announced their nominations (drawn from the previous longlist announced in the summer). Two International Feature Film Oscar contenders Close (Belgium) and Holy Spider (Denmark) lead the nominations alongside Ruben Östlund's English-language satire Triangle of Sadness.  Each received four nominations. Who will be nominated for Costume Design?

Shirley Kurata's costumes for "Jobu Tupaki" in EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE are great chaotic fun

Let's tackle each Oscar category while there's still wiggle room for all contenders! Last season Best Costume Design was sewn up (sorry!) unusually early in the year when Jenny Beavan's garbage dress unfurled midway through Cruella (2021) in the summer movie season. From then on it was everyone versus Cruella and Beavan came out on top for the third time in her delicious career. The costumes of 2022 haven't really had one showstopping gown to end everyone else's Oscar dreams so it's anyone's guess at this point.

Let's discuss 8 films we think are major threats for those 5 nomination slots and why. It seems natural to start with two films where fashion is a co-lead of sorts...

TIFF Diary #6: Moving On, The Fabelmans, Corsage, Triangle of Sadness

This was gonna be the big one. A day jam-packed full of the most talked about  films of the festival, from some of the world’s most esteemed auteurs. So why was my favourite movie of the day a middling buddy comedy from the director of America Pie?

You'd think it would be impossible to make a light-hearted farce about the trauma of historic sexual abuse but Moving On from director Paul Weitz and starring the legendary duo of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin gives it a good go. I’d happily watch these two in anything but to wholly succeed this probably needed a darker, harder edge instead of Grace and Frankie – The Movie which is essentially what we have here. Having said that it’s thoroughly enjoyable. That's not something I can say for the rest of my days viewing...
