Did you see The Woman King this weekend?

by Nathaniel R

AND WE'RE OFF... Fall film season is now underway, thanks to the wrap up of TIFF and something finally happening in the nation's theaters again. Those somethings were Gina Prince-Blythwood's action drama The Woman King and the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream on IMAX screens, both doing fine business. Here are the charts from the weekend. We separate the wide and limited because otherwise limited release don't get any attention in stories about what people are seeing. But more people SHOULD frequent their local arthouses.

The only thing I saw in the weekend was the new Assembled making-of documentary on Thor: Love and Thunder and Satyajit Ray's Devi as my Blind Spot.

Saw MOONAGE DAYDREAM and THE WOMAN KING before the weekend, and both were such beautiful cinematic experiences. The latter was way more emotional than I expected! I also finally caught up on AFTER YANG. Lovely film. I'm on a great streak of very good films this month.

I had a chaotic weekend and saw nothing new but did manage to catch an interesting old TV movie called The Golden Gate Murders with Susannah York and David Janssen.

Off topic quick question.

Did I miss a reschedule post for the 1951 Smackdown? I thought it was supposed to post last Monday the 19th. I've been keeping an eye out and don't think I missed it.

Thanks!!

I saw Moonage Daydream which.... I think I liked?

It sure is a lot! And a lot of that lot is being a movie buff and identifying all the quick clips.

I saw Pearl and loved it! I did my homework and watched X last week to be ready. Both are fantastic and a fun twist on the slasher genre. Pearl is especially cinematic, with everything from the color palette to the score straight out of the technicolor heyday. Mia Goth gives an incredible performance, somehow managing to make the audience fear, loathe, pity, and cheer for her all at once. There's a dance sequence that should make year-end lists of best musical moments, and the final shot is an acting feat unlike anything else I've seen. I'd call it a must for actressexuals, even those who don't generally flock to horror.

FLUX GOURMET - after being thoroughly seduced by BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO about a decade ago, I had subsequently failed to catch any of Peter Strickland's follow-ups, so I was determined not to le tthe same happen to this one, And I wasn't disappoiinted - some of the biggest cinema laughs I have had this year came from this typical-weird offering

FIRE OF LOVE - ...but the highlight of the weekend was this documentary. Absolutely agree with Glenn's review (except I didn't find Miranda July's narration that grating), and it has to be seen on the big screen. Hope it ends up being in the mix of contenders for the Oscar next year.

I went opening day to WOMAN KING. Good crowd - biggest I've seen for a matinee for a non-franchise film.
It's good in an old-fashioned historical epic kind of way, which means big emotional strokes with the history being iffy.

Was lucky enough to attend a showing of Memoria at my local arthouse cinema. Hypnotically beautiful.

I saw The Woman King. Whoa, that was intense.

Viola was magnificent, Lashana Lynch and Sheila Atim are thrilling, the young actress Thuso Mbedu was excellent. (John Boyega was lackluster). The other trainee warriors were distinct individuals.

Gina Prince-Bythewood has accomplished an extraordinarily difficult task here with great skill, style, and panache that should be recognized and rewarded.

Having loved Top Gun, I clearly wasn't going to miss Top Gun: Maverick, and also being a fan of Tom Cruise, I knew the best place to watch it would be the big screen. I totally enjoyed the film as I watched it with a helping of popcorn.

There were moments where I felt excited, emotional and even laughed along with the other viewers. It delivers light, simple and sweet entertainment in a delicious mix of action, drama, some romance and humor in a delightful manner.
