"Elvis" and "The Batman" lead the MUAHS nominations

by Cláudio Alves

"Elvis" | © Warner Bros.

The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild have announced their nominees in this, their awards' tenth year. Some surprises abound, mainly regarding what films were shut out, but plenty of the Oscar finalists show up throughout their categories. The Batman and Elvis lead with three nominations each, while, in the land of TV, American Horror Stories and Pam & Tommy rule over with triple nods. Though, if one wants to point towards the MUAHS favorite production, we must venture into their Live programming portion, where Legendary dominates with a total of five nominations. HBO recently canceled the show, so it's good to see it go out with a bang among the guilds.

After the jump, discover the full list of nominees and some stray observations…

FEATURE-LENGTH MOTION PICTURE

BEST CONTEMPORARY MAKE-UP

  • The Batman (Naomi Donne, Doone Forsyth, Norma Webb, Jemma Carballo)
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once (Michelle Chung, Erin Rosenmann, Dania A. Ridgway)
  • The Menu (Deborah LaMia Denaver, Mazena Puksto, Donna Cicatelli, Deb Rutherford)
  • Nope (Shutchai Tym Buacharern, Jennifer Zide-Essex, Eleanor Sabaduquia, Kato De Stefan)
  • Spirited (Monica Huppert, Autumn J. Butler, Vivian Baker)

Spirited is an odd nominee in this category since most of its narrative focuses on a fantasy world while its biggest set piece is firmly set in Victorian times. The most surprising omissions include the Oscar-shortlisted The Whale and other awards hopefuls like Glass Onion and Top Gun: Maverick.

BEST PERIOD AND/OR CHARACTER MAKE-UP

  • Amsterdam (Nana Fischer, Miho Suzuki, Jason Collins)
  • Babylon (Heba Thorisdottir, Shaunna Bren Chavez, Jean Black, Mandy Artusato)
  • Blonde (Tina Roesler Kerwin, Elena Arroy, Cassie Lyons)
  • Elvis (Shane Thomas, Angela Conte)
  • Till (Denise Tunnell, Janice Tunnell, Ashley Langston)

Only Till appears on this lineup without a corresponding spot on the Academy's shortlist. It occupies the place where one might expect All Quiet on the Western Front or Emancipation to appear. With each passing day, I become more and more convinced that Amsterdam is a force to be reckoned with in this race.

BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS MAKE-UP

  • The Batman (Michael Marino, Mike Fontaine, Yoichi Art Sakamoto, Göran Lundström)
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Joel Harlow, Kim Felix
  • Elvis (Mark Coulier & Jason Baird)
  • Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical (Barrie Gower, Emma Faulkes, Chloe Muton-Phillips)
  • The Whale (Adrien Morot, Kathy Tse, Chris Gallaher)

Which fat suit will get the prize? It's astonishing how only Black Panther avoids that particular cinematic vice, while Matilda gets in despite the horrendous work on little Bruce Bogtrotter, who looks like a skinny kid with a pillow shoved down his front. I assume this is The Whale's to lose.

BEST CONTEMPORARY HAIRSTYLING

  • The Batman (Zoe Tahir, Melissa Van Tongeran, Paula Price, Andrea Lance Jones)
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Camille Friend, Evelyn Feliciano, Marva Stokes, Victor Paz)
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once (Anissa E. Salazar, Meghan Heaney, Miki Caporusso)
  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Jeremy Woodhead, Tracey Smith, Leslie D. Bennett)
  • The Menu (Adruitha Lee, Monique Hyman, Kate Loftis, Barbara Sanders)

The Menu continues to do surprisingly well in the guilds. One can't say it's undeserved, for even those who dislike the picture must agree that it's beautifully designed. Apart from that, there's nothing major to report.

"Blonde" | © NetflixBEST PERIOD HAIR STYLING AND/OR CHARACTER HAIR STYLING

  • Amsterdam (Adruitha Lee, Lori McCoy-Bell, Cassandra L. Russek, Yvette Shelton)
  • Babylon (Jaime Leigh McIntosh, Ahou Mofid, Aubrey Marie)
  • Blonde (Jaime Leigh McIntosh, Lynnae Duley, Ahou Mofid, Robert Pickens)
  • Elvis (Shane Thomas, Louise Coulston)
  • The Woman King (Louisa Anthony, Jamika Wilson, Plaxedes Kelias, Charity Gwakuka)

Between its smashing performance amidst the guilds and the unexpected stanning from Jerrod Carmichael and Colin Farrell at the Globes, Blonde seems poised for more Oscar success than one might have expected after all that negative press. So is Ana de Armas coming for that Best Actress nomination? It seems like it.

With the brain consumed by Oscar talk, there's little left to think about television, advertising, or theatrical prizes. One interesting thing to note is the guild's willingness to recognize excellence even when it comes from canceled shows. Legendary is here, of course, but so is Dangerous Liaisons. On another note, curious that the Boulet Brothers got recognized for Dragula while Drag Race gets zilch. Without further ado, here are the rest of the MUAHS nominations:

I've had AMSTERDAM on the chart (either as a nominee or a potential spoiler) all year for Makeup and nobody believed me when it got trashed by critics. But i said what i said.

BLONDE's resurgence has been fascinating but we all shoudla known: biopic of famous icon

There's a lot of useful information here that I'm looking for, it's so refreshing Flappy Bird

These noms just don't make sense with CRIMES OF THE FUTURE missing.

January 12, 2023 | Registered CommenterRyan Steinke

I've thought BLONDE was a make up and hair nominee this entire time. De Armas hovering right outside the five because she'd be the only big recognizable biopic on the women's side (TILL is a biopic, sure, but not one built on mannerisms and voice and recreation of a famous person) and this might be the push needed to shoot it into the top five on our next round of predictions.
