"Banshees" and "Everything Everywhere" lead the SAG Nominations
by Nathaniel R
It’s a rapidly changing world. This year’s 29th annual SAG Awards are leaving their usual home on cable for a live stream on Netflix’s YouTube channel. The 30th edition a full year from now will set the new norm (?) as SAG will begin streaming live globally on Netflix. That potentially means more viewers given Netflix’s popularity and reach, and it potentially means less as awards shows continue their trending to more niche entertainment that's exclusively for us obsessive awards nerds despite its annual attempts to appeal to everyone.
But we’re here to discuss the nominations which are upon us...
The Banshees of Inisherin & Everything Everywhere All At Once tied with 5 nominations each, which ties the record for most nominations ever at the SAG for a single film (Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, and Doubt make it a five way tie for SAG's history)
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
-
Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”)
-
Hong Chau (“The Whale”)
-
Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
-
Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
-
Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Only a 3 to 5 match with the Globes (who preferred Dolly De Leon & Carey Mulligan to Hong Chau & Stephanie Hsu) so this category is still wide open going into Oscar voting over the weekend. Interesting to see no individuals from Women Talking nominated despite their Cast nomination. SAG usually double dips. SAG doesn't often line up 5 for 5 in this category so none of these women should feel totally comfortable about Oscar night plans given how overstuffed this category has felt all season. The question is, if any of them fall, will it be for Janelle Monae, Dolly De Leon, Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Nina Hoss, Gabrielle Union, or Carey Mulligan who have all had either buzz or precursor nominations or wins at some point in the season.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
-
Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”)
-
Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
-
Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
-
Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
-
Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”)
Eddie Redmayne continues to be the awards performance we didn’t see coming in this category, despite attending the actual premiere of this movie! Will he snag his third Oscar nomination? Or will Oscar voters vary up this category a bit and if so who benefits: Brian Tyree Henry? Brad Pitt? Mark Rylance?
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
-
Cate Blanchett (Tár”)
-
Viola Davis (“The Woman King”)
-
Ana de Armas (“Blonde”)
-
Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”)
-
Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)
Ana de Armas continues to land the key precursor nominations though twitter and online pundits had mostly written her off before the Globe nod. The lesson for all of us, year after year: no matter the performance or film or the reviews or ANYTHING ELSE, think twice before betting against biopic mimicry!
The big question is will one of these five fall to make room for Michelle Williams or Margot Robbie at the Oscars?
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
-
Austin Butler (“Elvis”)
-
Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)
-
Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”)
-
Bill Nighy (“Living”)
-
Adam Sandler (“Hustle”)
Sandler is the surprise nominee here with the other four firmly in the “will probably be Oscar nominated” mix. That fifth spot at the Oscars is a true wild card. Sandler? Cruise? Pope? Mescal?
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
-
“Babylon”
-
“The Banshees of Inisherin”
-
“Everything Everywhere All at Once”
-
“The Fabelmans”
-
“Women Talking”
It’s one of those years where SAG stayed firmly on consensus opting for the five films most thought had a great chance to land here.
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
-
“Avatar: The Way of Water”
-
“The Batman”
-
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
-
“Top Gun: Maverick”
-
“The Woman King”
No bizarre choices this year for stunts though we weep at the omission of Everything Everywhere All At Once which definitely belonged in this category.
TV PRIZES
Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series
-
“Andor”
-
“The Boys”
-
“House of the Dragon”
-
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
-
“Stranger Things”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
-
Steve Carrell (“The Patient”)
-
Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”)
-
Sam Elliott (“1883”)
-
Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”)
-
Evan Peters (“Dahmer”)
Paul Walter and Evan Peters both won Globes the night before these nominations but because of SAG’s strange “catch all” categories, they’re competing against each other here.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
-
Emily Blunt (“The English”)
-
Jessica Chastain (“George and Tammy”)
-
Julia Garner (“Inventing Anna”)
-
Niecy Nash Betts (“Dahmer”)
-
Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”)
Will Amanda Seyfried continue her trophy-magnet run or will SAG move on?
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
-
Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”)
-
Bill Hader (“Barry”)
-
Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”)
-
Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”)
-
Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”)
None of these actors have ever won the SAG in this category. Though Hader, Martin and Short have all been nominated.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
-
Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”)
-
Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
-
Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”)
-
Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”)
-
Jean Smart (“Hacks”)
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
-
“Abbott Elementary”
-
“Barry”
-
“The Bear”
-
“Hacks”
-
“Only Murders in the Building”
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
-
Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”)
-
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”)
-
Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”)
-
Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”)
-
Adam Scott (“Severance”)
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
-
Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”)
-
Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”)
-
Julia Garner (“Ozark”)
-
Laura Linney (“Ozark”)
-
Zendaya (“Euphoria”)
Julia Garner, Zendaya, and Jennifer COolidge were ALL winners at the Globes for these performances. SAG has way too few acting categories given that they're the Screen Actors Guild Awards!
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
-
“Better Call Saul”
-
“The Crown”
-
“Ozark”
-
“Severance”
-
“The White Lotus”

Weird that 2 of the Best Cast nominees didn't score any acting nominations (Babylon's presence here is kinda baffling nd I don't know what to make of Women Talking awards run), and The Fabelman only got one.
Glass Onion seems to be losing steam quickly .
I don't know what that Sandler movie is but for the rest they can copy these nominations and past them into the Oscars acting categories.
Rooting for The Fabelmans winning at the Oscars, but I would be glad if Michelle Williams will not show up because:
1. is the performance that I loved less in the movie
2. why give her another nomination at this point if you can't give her the Oscar? And that perfomance is not the case.
Even if he give me a child with every close-up I'm also ok with Mescal's snub because:
1. the role is good written and the direction is great, but his work is pratically sleepwalking and (SPOILER AHEAD) showing the most beautiful ass in Hollywood.
2. do you have idea of what big awards attention can do to the ego of a 27 years old hung whose carrer is just started? Welcome, Edward Norton!
That can't be good for Glass Onion's BP chances (or Janelle in supporting). I thought that cast would be slam dunk in the big category
So weird no Women Talking ladies are taking hold!
So very happy for Stephanie Hsu! I held my breath for the last Best Ensemble nod hoping WOMEN TALKING or WOMAN KING would get it and the first one did. Too bad about the latter (which deserved it). I honestly expected GLASS ONION to show up here as well.
All of that said... Best Picture at the Oscars is going to BANSHEES, EEAAO or FABELMANS, yes? I can't think of any pathway for any other movie at this point. Is anyone thinking differently?
And the Directors Guild were just announced and it's STILL those 3 films above (plus TAR/TOP GUN). I guess I can see either of those two additional films as well, but it just seems like it won't be.
Hoping Bassett is starting a frontrunner status conversation going.
And WOMEN TALKING pulls off the ensemble bid despite no additional noms. Guess it’s still in the hunt for Best Picture.
Ugh, Blonde, why?!? I like Ana de Armas, I really do. But nominating that film for ANYTHING is just nauseating.
And as expected, they made Best Supporting Actress even more consuming. That category could go SO many different ways on Oscar nomination morning.
Gawd, those television nominations. Even other actors can't bother to nominate fresh faces and/or truly remarkable performances. The f^&cking The Crown and Ozark for Best Ensemble? There is so MUCH BETTER TV than what's been showing up in the last 3-4 years of awards. Lazy.
Yawn. I'm out.
Just saw that TÁR/ Todd Field scored a DGA nomination. Incredible. Best news of the morning.
Like many of you I am getting tired of category fraud when more deserving supporting turns are right there.
I was hoping Dolly De Leon would make the cut but glad two Asian actresses made it instead.
I may have to watch Adam Sandler's Hustle after his nomination. I'm kidding as I have not even seen The Banshees..., Women Talking and Till.
Why is no one awarding Laura Linney's brilliant turn in Ozark? Julia Garner is fine (I could not quite warm up to her voice) but Linney is outstanding.
Also, I think EEATO is gonna sweep the SAGs (who are MUCH more enthusiastic about awarding comedy) but only manage one win at the Oscars.
Hustle is a very good movie. I'm glad to see it nominated here.
I'm really not a Marvel fan but I'm glad to see Bassett receive the "career honors" attention over Jamie Lee Curtis as she's so much more deserving.
Looks like Bassett is now positioned for that long awaited second Oscar nod. I always thought she would have a better chance than most because regardless of how good the performances may be, Supporting Actress was shaping up to lack some established movie star sparkle. Both she and Jamie Lee Curtis will benefit from a field full of newcomers.
Does this mean I have to watch Blonde now? Yuk
In other news, remember that thing where competitive awards are supposed to be given to the BEST performance in the particular filed? Yeah, Bassett and Yeoh have no business winning anything. The lifetime achievement award is a separate thing that still exists.
These shows used to be political beyond redemption but now they are even more insufferable when you add the identity politics to the mix.
I still think Angela Bassett will be the surprise snub on Oscar nomination morning. Oscars have historically been very resistant to Marvel movies (they have a lot less tech nods than people think).
I got Redmayne right and that Babylon would only appear in cast! I had a hunch about De Armas but didn't expect her to get in instead of Michelle! Can't see Redmayne missing out on BAFTA either.
I didn't know Sandler had buzz for Hustle, critics tried to make him happen 3 years ago with Uncut Gems but that was an extremely tough lineup for best actor, this year is softer so maybe he gets in? Satellite also seems to love him as he got in with Uncut Gems in 2019 and this time with Hustle there as well. Then again they even nominated Mark Wahlberg...
So the 5th spot for Actress is between the three blondes: De Armas, Robbie, Williams!
Oscars were not particularly resistant to the first Black Panther. I think it's an exception. Though granted, acting nominations did not occur, but Bassett is a standout/overdue.
It feels like Women Talking is a film that the industry likes. I suspect it will turn up with at least, if not 2, acting nominations. Given that, I'm still not convinced anyone other than Kerry Condon is truly a lock in supporting actress. However, Angela Bassett's win and her nomination here make her feel more secure. She reminds me of Glenn Close in 2018, where a (somewhat) shocking win made her safe as a nominee for the season, and a leading contender for the award. Bassett gave a great speech last night, so she should be secure for a nomination. But Oscar could snub her for Hoss and the Women Talking women.
I'm surprised by how safe Ana de Armas is seeming, but she has a few things in her favor. She'd be Netflix's highest profile nominee, and I suspect they're aggressively working to get her a nomination. She's also a star on the rise and is at the moment when the academy loves to nominate women.
I do wonder if Netflix's lack of top contenders also means that someone like Eddie Redmayne could stick it out and get a nom.
I think Michelle Williams will still make it in - the academy has always embraced her when other bodies haven't. Hopefully, should Fablemans win, she's the designated speaker.
Best Actor's 5th spot will either go to a BP contender Cruise or a passion pick like Mescal.
Best Actress is Yeoh v Blanchett with Deadwyler,De Armas and probably Williams
Best S Actor I feel is the SAG line up.
Best S Actress Curtis,Condon,Blanchett,Buckley and either Chau or Hsu.
GO ADAM SANDLER!!!!!!!
Michelle Williams is one of my favorite actresses, but she was lousy in The Fabelmans. I'm glad she'll be sitting this one out and hope that Oscar follows suit.
As a Southeast Asian, I am so proud that this year there are 4 potential Southeast Asian contenders in the acting categories: Michelle Yeoh (Malaysian), Ke Huy Quan (Vietnamese), Dolly de Leon (Filipino) and Hong Chau (Vietnamese). It is possible that an unprecedented 3 out of 4 acting categories will have at least one Southeast Asian nominee. Very proud!
More and more I feel like Tom Cruise is not happening after this SAG nominations. I suspect there are some actors branch members who secretly dislike / won’t vote for Cruise even though on surface they might give out the impression that they like or admire him. Some will think Cruise as a movie star, not an actor’s actor worth nominating for acting award (and certainly not for a popcorn summer blockbuster like Top Gun: Maverick), and some might have issue with his connection to the Scientology (especially the young and more diversified new members that AMPAS invited in the last few years – we don’t know how many more Jerrod Carmichael out there). When it comes to voting, it is personal and private, so one is free to not vote for someone he/she dislikes. Remember Jennifer Lopez from Hustlers?
Replace Sandler with Pope and i'd be happy with these as Oscar nominations.
One of the things to love about Cate Blanchett is that you know she’d be DELIGHTED to lose to Michelle Yeoh, remember how thrilled she was for Marion Cotillard? Game respects game and she has two Oscars at home—if she wins she’ll spend 30 seconds of her speech recognizing Yeoh and if she loses she’ll be clapping harder than anyone else. She has Meryl Streep Generous Energy (MSGE).
I'm happy to see Adam Sandler gain some traction simply bc I thought he deserved to be nominated a few years ago for Uncut Gems. It would be fun to see him nominated at the Oscars, but I haven't seen the movie.
However, I realized Netflix is streaming the ceremony, and Hustle is a Netflix film. Coincidence? Who knows.
I think Supporting Actor is pretty much wrapped up (winner and nominees). The rest of the categories have wiggle room (Actress is surprising, because I assumed Michelle Williams would be there in place of Armas and that category was a done deal too).
I hope this SAG list transfers to Oscar, but I'm doubtful. Actually, I'd prefer Dolly de Leon in place of Angela Bassett. Love her, but Marvel acting nominations, really? I'll admit I haven't seen the film (zero interest), but from what I've heard it isn't *that* kind of role / performance. I think the Oscars could drop her, unless she wins every televised award. She did win the Globe tho...
I'm rooting for Hong Chau and Stephanie Hsu (and Jamie Lee Curtis, of course).
Yavor, identity politics are just as at play when white people win for subpar work in subpar films because concept of identity as political is not relegated only to those who exist in the margins of society.
Hate the Willams snub. Gives wings to the category fraud apostles.
I might be the only person in the Internet who still likes Eddie Redmayne but going supporting is shameless.
Love the movie ensemble category. Very rare.
I still think that one actor from Women Talking will make it, but not sure which one!
I think that Ana does more than just mimicry and she's such a movie star.
I absolutely detest Paul Walter Hauser's performance. He'll probably win the Emmy.
I hate The White Lotus in the drama category. Sends the wrong message.
when can we expect your annual 'who wasn't famous enough to be considered part of the cast' article, nathaniel? i love those
I don't care much for EEAAO and I've become increasingly annoyed at its dominance this awards season, but Yeoh and Quan's performances are undeniably great. They'd both be really deserving Oscar winners.
I would've loved to see The Woman King, The Menu or Glass Onion in Ensemble over Fabelmans personally. I'm surprised Banshees got ensemble when the four actors included already had individual nominations. That's pretty cool.
I know I'm a broken record about this every year, but the Television Movie or Limited Series category DESERVES a best cast category! While The White Lotus moved to Drama Series this year, imagine seeing so many deserving performers with smaller roles that hardly ever get nominated amongst the leads in the TV Movie or Limited Series actor and actress categories!
I think this is our Actress 5 for the Oscars.
