Weekend Box Office: Shyamalan and the Brady Ladies Dethrone Avatar
By Ben Miller
It only took eight weeks, but Avatar: The Way of Water is no longer the top film at the box office. M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin and the award-winning ladies of 80 for Brady both managed to top James Cameron's sequel, though not with any overwhelming numbers. Both films managed just north of $14 and $12 million, respectively. More than anything else, it's just nice to have some competition and new things to watch in theaters. Studios are releasing less and less these days...

The only other two releases were the animated film The Amazing Maurice. The leader in per-screen average was Belgium's Oscar-nominated Close. The film doesn't expand for another two weeks, so it has another shot to claim that title again next weekend.
Next weekend - The stripperverse trilogy comes to a close with Magic Mike's Last Dance. We'll have to see if it makes an impact. Meanwhile, Titanic is re-releasing in theaters for its 25th anniversary, because James Cameron doesn't have enough money already.
What did you watch this weekend? I keep knocking out Oscar entries with Documentary nominees All That Breathes and A House Made of Splinters as well as Cinematography nominee BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. I also found time for rewatches of To Leslie and Top Gun: Maverick.

A bit of oscar catch-up in Causeway, which is an impressively sketched character study, so minimalist, and Living, a sad story joyfully told.
Both totally deserve their nominations.
And then Infinity Pool yesterday, as part of my civic duty. Sarsgaard and Goth are really impressive.
A re-watch of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on Disney+ and a couple of first-timers in Fire of Love on Disney+ and a making-of documentary called Group Madness on YouTube about the making of Yellowbeard.
I watched The Eternal Daughter and loved it - a great film about the type of mother-daughter relationship we rarely see dramatized. Tilda is so impressive in a low-key, lived-in dual performance; she should have been in the Best Actress conversation this year. I think people have gotten so accustomed to her knocking us out, year after year, that they just ignore it come awards time.
I also saw EO and I was disappointed. It felt so manipulative to me. I couldn't help but compare it to Okja, which is one of Bong Joon-Ho's lesser films, but still so much more effective at proving the same point (not to mention driving home a greater anti-capitlist narrative as well).
I saw the usual mixed bunch
Thelma and Louise Sarandon still should've won, love Jodie too.
The Honeymoon Killers 70's cult thriller
Coal Miner's Daughter One of Sissy Spacek's best,D'Angelo fun in a cameo.
Mindcage John Malkovich collecting a cheque in 90's throwback thriller
Turn of the Screw Patsy Kensits version
Tentacles Shelley Winters Jaws rip off.
Pamela Anderson Documentary
I didnt see any features... just worked on the Oscar-nominated shorts. missing a few still but mostly done with the 15.
I finally saw Banshees Of Inisherin. I didn't really like Three Billboards but this one was a tad better. I was really into it until they threw it all away about halfway through. The acting was great though I suppose. Colin was the MVP.
I saw Knock at the Cabin which I thoroughly enjoyed - haters be damned. Mr. Aldridge is rapidly turning into my new favorite actor.
I watched it. I was hoping for a more engaging, more dramatic episode like the way Drift Hunters did to engage its audience.
